to best communicate to the viewer that something was off the first person to sing needed to be the most unlikely. Therefore he was the logical choice. From there the next step had to be a duet. Then an ensemble progressively demonstrating the extent of the anomaly. If it was anything less than that it could be interpreted as an isolated problem, or a single person who was just being silly. If someone at your job started to sing for no reason would you even raise an eyebrow? probably not.

Pike has the best faces that scene. Ortegas starts her bit, he jumps out of his chair and stands back a bit, a real "WTF?!" moment. Una pitches in, another step sideways to gain distance. They make eye contact, and he just shakes his head to say "What was that? You don't sing." Then La'an comes in, silent at first, he relaxes. Then she starts singing, and he has this "There goes our last brain cell..." face. Speaking of La'an, she's looking at everybody as if to challenge them. Ortegas and the navigator (I cannot remember her name, no matter what I do) doing their checks in perfect musical sync while being weirded out by it was just a great deatil.

As others have said, it's the little moments that really ice this already lovely cake. I especially love Pike's reaction to Ortegas. Up until that point, he's only been hearing members of the crew singing over comms. Even his own first line of "It's happening again" is more kind of spoken, so there's just that little look of uncertainty when he delivers it. But when Ortegas sings, it's the first time he actually sees/hears it happening in person and he's immediately like "OK, what the Farragut is happening?!!" 😁
@Aelwyn7 ай бұрын
I usually hate musical episodes, because a lot of the time it's just the cast singing already popular songs the entire episode for no real reason whatsoever. But this episode? They BUILT IT INTO THE PLOT. They WROTE THEIR OWN MUSIC AND SONGS AND EVEN DANCE NUMBERS. All of it felt natural for the characters and the show instead of OOC, and the way the numbers enhanced or inconvenienced the characters during this episode was very well thought-out. I genuinely squeaked when I realized Christine breaking up with Spock was the "villain song" of the musical, and the fact that they realized they had to follow the rules of a musical was the cherry on top. Everything coalesced into a grand finale that felt neither forced nor undeserved, and it was all just so so brilliant. You can tell the cast really enjoyed this episode a lot as well, as none of them looked stiff or uninterested in their performance but genuinely committed and engaged. THIS is how you do a musical episode, people. I can understand how anyone who hates musicals would hate this episode, but as someone who casually enjoys the odd musical this episode was so much fun for me to watch.

This episode will be remembered and will go down in history as one of the most loved episodes of all time. Unique, filled with humour and very entertaining. Are they trying to create a star trek musical for the stage?

I find that Rebecca Romain has a great talent for musical theater. All the cast did actually. Such a well made episode.

I love the music and all, but my brain is going on about how lucky they were that the subspace flucuation wave didn't end them up in a radically different reality. ;) (Yes, I love the music, it's just how my brain works--I blame subspace!)

I think most people enjoyed it just a few "TrUe HaRdCoRe FaNs" are trying to tell everyone what real trek is, and failing at it, for the billionth time.

Sort of sad Ortega doesn’t get many song numbers in this episode, rewatching this and can see the actress seems like she actually nailed it. And of course her only song is her just stating her one thing.

After watching this a few times (and a few dozen more), it sunk in for me how the opening notes of "Status Report" sound like standard BGM...until Spock starts singing, and then you realize that it's diegetic. Nice touch.

I’m a huge fan of musicals! I admit, I was a bit unsure how Star Trek would pull this kind of thing off, despite all the goofy things it’s done over the years. But as soon as the first song happened, I was hooked! This episode was amazing!

Something my dad pointed out, everyone else save for Spock and La'an gave *opinions*. "Mundane". "All okay." Spock and La'an gave *facts*. "This is the state. This is the action I will take." Spock, he is Spock, duh. La'an? She is so tightly wound up that she doesn't trust her feelings, and we even see that be a strength with "emotions are a security risk" later on. She is 100% facts based when on the job. Great writing.

I also think it's great because the series has a different vibe since the Lower Decks episode. She is lighter, playful. My colleague in the company thinks the musical episode is particularly great, he is a hobby musician himself.

This is 1000% the sort of thing that would happen in Classic Trek, and it is done SO WELL. If this is the consistent tone and writing style of Strange New Worlds, and it, as it seems it has the feel of TNG and Classic, I think I've been won over enough to start watching this show. Also, I noticed Spock was the first to be hit by the energy wave, and Pike was the last to be hit by the energy wave about 40-45 seconds later, and there's about the same amount of time between Spock being hit by the wave and him beginning to sing, as there is between Spock starting to sing and the middle of the song when Pike starts singing ('It's happening again' Pike sings it, and then realizes he's singing it and freezes in confusion). They were being affected in the order they were hit by the wave, with about 40-45 seconds between being hit and the anomaly symptoms taking hold... matching the rate of speed at which the wave itself moved, about 32 fps (since the wave took about 45 seconds to cross all 1,450 feet of the Enterprise, that is, the distance between Spock and Pike, more or less)

Anyone else notice the fact that the song they play in to the Subspace thingy that starts the plot is "Anything goes, by Cole Porter". A song about big changes to previously established things and how jarring that can be to the people living through those changes. I think they put it there as a type of "hey guys, we do things different from the old TOS days, like this literal musical episode. Don't get too hung up about it and just enjoy the show" kind of nod from the production team
