@@jon-pauldupont5746 Absolutely, Fantastic music from a bygone era, You can't go past the Funk Maestro George/Parliament/Funkadelic, they are synonymous with FUNK however I think you missed my point. L.A.B are bringing back the Funk right now (a groovy funk) so I thought I'd introduce them to those that aren't familiar with music from other countries. Six60 & L.A.B and a couple of vocalists, Teeks & Stan Walker (live with the Levites) have been turning heads and ears onto their diverse sound (a fusion of Funk, Soul, RnB, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Rock or Reggae wrapped in island rhythms).

My brother Forrest Lee Jackson and I loved this jam growing up in Savannah Georgia 🇬🇪. They were always around Savannah but Daddy wouldn’t let me take Forrest to any of their concerts because he said we’d be the Only White teenagers there 😂😂😂 Flashlight 🔦 is our all time favorite to this day though! I plan for it to be playing as friends and family are leaving my future funeral… Got to see George Clinton preform Flashlight 🔦 as The Very Last Song 🎶 in 2004 when Savannah held a music festival in Forsyth Park. My son Alex got the chance to enjoy with thousands that Friday evening!!!🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

P-Funk stands for Parliament-Funkadelic. Parliament and Funkadelic were two funk groups that mostly consisted of the same members, and both had great funk hits. Two by Funkadelic that you will love are "One Nation Under a Groove" (1978) and "Knee Deep" (1979). Before they were a funk band, Funkadelic was a psychedelic band, and they have a 1970 song with great guitar work called "I Got a Thing" that you might like. Also, George Clinton was the core of Parliament and Funkadelic and y'all would really like his solo stuff like "Atomic Dog," a huge hit in 1982.

The P in P Funk actually stands for pure as stated in the liner notes to Motor Booty Affair. I’m old enough to remember when Funkadelic was the better known of the two bands and DJ’s would refer to them as “The Funkadelic Parliaments.” There are old concert posters floating around the internet with Funkadelic first. After this song was released people thought that PFunk stood for Parliament Funkadelic. In this song their using drugs as an analogy for funk. P Funk, “uncut funk, the bomb”. “Don’t want my funk stepped on” we’re all drug terms indicated their brand of funk was 100% pure. Not deluted. Parliament’s style of funk was more rooted in jazz and Funkadelics rooted in psychedelic rock. After they added bass synthesizers in the late 70’s and with Funkadelic’s move to Warner Brothers the styles began to merge. Also, Parliament was a horn based band and Funkadelic was guitar based.

Fred Wesley(Trombone) and the Horny Horns Joined Parliament/Funkadelic after leaving James Brown. This was their debut collaboration. George Clinton was writing and producing Parliament/Funkadelic (P-Funk), The Parlets, the Brides of Funkenstien. The horn soloists, Maceo Parker on sax and Fred Wesley on trombone, were in James Brown's band (The JBs) with Bootsy Collins the bassist. That's why George threw in "Ain't it funky now," the title of one of James Brown's biggest hits, about halfway through the sax solo. Singer Philippe Wynne, also briefly in the JBs, would collaborate with P-Funk a bit later.

You two need to listen to the entire Funkadelic album “Maggot Brain”. It’s their best album by far, and it’s dominated by guitar wizard Eddie Hazel, who is on the Jimi Hendrix level of guitarists. This is one album you will want to play LOUD, especially while driving.

Same here. I was 6 years old when I first heard them. Being the youngest of 5, I was exposed to tons of music. Ohio took its Funk seriously. It started with King Studios and James Brown with Bootsy Collins. Tons of great bands you know. I soon picked up a saxophone afterwards and life changed. It changed further when, in pursuit of my sister her boyfriend brought Bootsy Collins to the house! I lt was late night a I was in PJs. My sis has a picture of me holding up one of Bootsy's gold records with a silly grin n my face. 😂

Parliament -Funkadelic are the same group that used different names because of a label dispute. They became known as Parliament-Funkadelic after a while. George Clinton was the leader and some of the main songwriters was George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and Junie Morrison. They were REALLY big in Black music in the 70s and 80s. and sporadic hits after that. the Members came from James Brown band and Ohio, and NJ. Absolutely incredible band live. Some of the best musicians I've ever seen. They had 15-20 members on stage sometimes.. P-Funk, Mothership Connection, We Want the Funk, Flashlight, Funkentelechy, Aqua Boogie, Knee Deep, One Nation Under a Groove, Maggot Brain, Dr Funkenstein, Atomic Dog, and other hits. Great dance music. A lot of Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's music and a lot of other rap artist sampled this group's music.

I didn't see this comment before. The rythmic foundation for this group and sound is the Godfather, James Brown. James created the funk groove emphasizing the downbeat, the one. Some of members of James' band that with Parliament are Boosie Collins on Bass, Maceo Parker on Sax, and Fred Wesley on Trombone. Remember James calling out Maceo or Fred before their solo.

Dance how you like - Funk not only moves, it can remove! PFunk is the combo of Parlaiment- Funkadelic, and George Clinton put them together to groove. Bootsy Collins on bass left for a bit to form Bootsy and his Rubber Band, but he eventually reunited with Clinton. With so many members, they could play for 3-4 hours straight. If someone took a break, there were others there to keep the crowd funked up. I have probably seen them more than any other group thanks to their many appearances at the Memphis in May Music Festival. My kids grew up on them, too. Grateful to have lived in a town that values music of all kinds - Memphis, TN. I’m also on board for you reacting to Tear the Roof Off the Sucka. So welcome to my world of funk that has been not so funky, It has been down since all of my funk is on 8 track tapes & my 8 track needs a good over hall. & to the young lady you only have to pull up some (SOUL TRAIN) when the funk bands were playing & watch the Soul Train line to see the dance moves during the funk days!! & I like hearing my funk with the both of you IT'S MORE FUN, SO THANK'S MARK!!!

Bernie Worrell was a very important part of the Parliament/Funkadelic sound.

This song is sampled by Dr. Dre's song Chronic. React to the song ~ Leon Haywood - I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You (1975) is also sampled by Dr. Dre, for the song G-Thang.

Amber, yes those are hi hat cymbals. The other cymbals a drummer uses are the ride cymbal and crash cymbals. There's different sizes and brands which give different sounds.

Believe it or not, Parliament was once an R&B singing group. In the 1960s the Parliaments had a hit titled, "Testify." The reason there is a group called Parliament and one called Funkadelic is because of some label dispute over ownership of the "Parliament" name. George Clinton, leader of Parliament decided to go with a different name: Funkadelic. Then through the 1970s he released great music--different albums--under both names, Parliament and Funkadelic. Together their sound is P-Funk.

P-funk is music by Parliament/Funkadelic. Both bands were vehicles for George Clinton and his merry band of funksters. Clinton used the Funkadelic name to explore the rockier side, but Funkadelic or Parliament...it's all P-funk!!

My theory: it is impossible to be angry while listening to funk. And George Clinton is the absolute master. Thanks for another great reaction!

I agree. I'm a musician, so frequently I sit down at the piano, and just play what I'm feeling. When I'm angry, funk is what comes out. So my theory is funk was created from a place of anger, as the antidote.

Gotta hear "Nobody's Fool " by Cinderella Live from Moscow in 1989... Tom Keifer does an INSANE guitar solo at the beginning of the song. Make sure you do the 7 minutes and 34 seconds version

Jordan did you catch that Dr Dre sampled this for The Chronic? Bootsy Collins taught George Clinton the James Brown philosophy of "The 1" and it changed George's whole outlook of music. Gotta do One Nation Under A Groove!
