Funkadelic and Parliament had the same musicians, so they can be thought of as one band. Wherever you go next with them, you're likely to hear something very different from this one. "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk)" is probably their best-known song, and is as good a choice as any for where to go next. Also, I disagree with this recent trend of thinking you have to come to an agreement on the rating. You're 2 different people, so sometimes you'll have different opinions. I'd rather each of you say what you really think rather than one of you conforming to what the other one thinks.

You guys just blew my freaking mind! I grew up thinking I was was a Funkadelic/Parliament fan... and I'm hearing this for the first time??? As a kid, I just thought of them as fun, FUNKY and outrageous, that they had just turned up the freak volume on the funky side of things. As I got older, I began to learn that they were a helluva lot more important than I was giving them credit for but still hadn't had the context. I probably couldn't get past the costumes. I'm now beginning to get a different taste of them and have a better appreciation for what they were actually bringing to the table. Big thanks for this one! It was an eye-opener for me! Totally seeing them in a new way.
@jamesgreenhow1082 жыл бұрын
I grew up with this band and knew many members personally. Trombone player Greg Boyer was my neighbor and played with P-FUNK for 22years before joining Prince until his untimely death. IN the early 70's Funkadelic was banned from radio play until the release of "Standing on the Verge" in 1974-75. The bands political views and anti-war protest during Vietnam was the basis. The most controversial of these was "March to the Witches Castle". Ironically the PENTAGON has adopted this very song and added a very disturbing video of actual war footage to honor the VETERANS of Vietnam at the VIETNAM WAR MEMORIAL in Washington DC. It is played in a loop 24/7.

Per Wikipedia: According to legend, the 10-minute title track ("Maggot Brain") was recorded in one take when Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had been told his mother was dead: Clinton instructed him "to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out through his guitar." This album and "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow" are excellent albums. Lots of great songs off of these two: "Free Your Mind's" title track, "Funky Dollar Bill," "Super Stupid," "Can You Get To That"....and then there's some later tracks like "Red Hot Mama," "(Not Just) Knee Deep" and "You Hit The Nail On The Head"...and some Parliament songs (with all the same band members) like "There Is Nothing Before Me But Thang," "Breakdown" and "Loose Booty." Lots of good stuff. And then there's the P-Funk material...there's no end to the good stuff that George Clinton's crew came up with. If you get a chance, try to find the "Tales From The Tour Bus" animated episodes (created by Mike Judge) on George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and the rest of all those crazy funk and country musicians.

You guys did it again. You played a song I'd never heard by a band I had never heard (P-Funk) and it was amazing -- total S-tier -- so good it hurt. The Red Hot Chili Peppers love P-Funk, so respect there. And Talking Heads' concert video -- I heard their synth guy was Benny Worrell (?) of P-Funk? Masterful! Just to throw this out -- a 10-min guitar-led instrumental piece, "Fracture" by King Crimson, off "Starless and Bible Black" is also about deep pain, but not tears -- it's teeth-gritting, dark, almost violent -- and as deeply structured as anything by Bach -- in other words, an intense contrast, both performable live, both high art, two opposite poles of expression -- both put you physically and mentally through the grinder in the most delicious way.

So yeah, Parliament and Funkadelic were two groups formed by George Clinton, with shared members between both. Funkadelic was more on the psychedelic rock end of things, while Parliament was more on the synthy funky end of things, though as time went on, the lines between the two kind of blurred, and you would have stuff by Funkadelic that might as well be a Parliament song, like "(Not Just) Knee Deep".

Creation "Maggot Brain" was recorded in one take when George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Hazel during the recording session to play as if he had been told his mother was dead:[2] Clinton explained "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him."[6] Though several other musicians performed on the track, Clinton largely faded them out of the final mix so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar. Hazel utilized fuzz and wah effects, inspired by his idol Jimi Hendrix; Clinton subsequently added delay and other effects in mixdown, saying "I Echoplexed it back on itself three or four times. That gave the whole thing an eerie feel, both in the playing and in the sound effects."[6] Critics have described the solo as "lengthy, mind-melting" and "an emotional apocalypse of sound."[7] -wiki

Welcome to the guitar work of Eddie Hazel! He plays on my favourite cover of Gimme Shelter - check out Ruth Copeland's incredible 8 minute version. Maybe the only cover of that song that can hold a candle to the original

he does the best cover of California Dreaming ever... maybe my favorite cover.

Not familiar with Funkadelic at all except for seeing the name out there, but, damn! that was something really deep down being channeled through a guitar. It transcends just playing music in the same way that the Ravi Shankar song at the end of Moneterey Pop Festival did for me.

The best song I personally like from funkadelics is " Free your mind and your ass will follow ". If you listen on the headphones it will blow you away!

I feel like this song takes me through an auditory experience of all stages of grief. Sadness, anger, concession, despair, and acceptance.

Funkadelic and Parliament we're the same set of musicians under two different names, collectively known as "P-Funk". Ironically, they used the "Funkadelic" name for their more rock-based music, and Parliament was pure, uncut, funk. At some point, your need to hit "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" or "P-Funk Wants To Get Funked Up". Heck, the album Mothership Connections should be a full-album reaction at some point.

The biggest difference is Parliament featured the horn section and made radio friendly tracks most of the time. Funkadelic featured mostly rock guitar. Bootsie's Rubber Band were also the same musicians.

You said it took you back to something in your childhood? The story about the song is this. The group leader George Clinton before the recording said to the lead guitarist, Eddie Hazel to go within himself to play this song. Imagining if Eddie's mother had just died. He pour all that emotional lose into the song. So if you had that type of feeling listening to it, Eddie did what was intended. True story about the song! By the way Eddie's nickname was 'Maggot Brain'. Peace to All !!!

I was so worried about our relationship going forward if you didn't love this, it's one of the best things I've ever laid ears on, and I think it means something different to everyone, it just takes shape in your head. Great reaction guys, my faith in you remains undiminished. 😁

You could react to any song from Funkadelic's self titled album and Maggot Brain. They are awesome and sadly forgotten in their contribution to Rock and psychadelic music. They do get the credit they deserve from their later funk era contrabutions to funk and RnB, not to mention how many times they were sampled in hip hop and rap during the 80s and 90s, but overlooked when it comes to rock.

Now, I am impressed, one of the greatest recordings of the 70's. Little known. Well Done on this choice

I got to see that live many times. It was the midpoint of every show. Amazing.
