In my opinion, it's so impressive that you've embraced the digital world of making, even with the incredible skillset you've built with current hand and power tools.

Here's a tip for cutting out parts with tabs. Amana makes a 3/16" flush cut trim bit. Works great in a handheld router to cut the tabs left from a 1/4" or larger endmill. Eliminates the need to go to the bandsaw and sander to cut the part out and eliminate the remnants of the tabs.

I made a snare drum case for my son out of leather. I used a wood mold I made out of two layers of 3/4 AC plywood then wet molded the top and bottom panels out of 10 oz leather. The mold gave me a 1-1/2" lip all the way around the panels. I had to make the top a bit bigger then the bottom so I added a strip of leather to the mold before I stretched the leather over the mold.

very good ! now what did you make from the walnut off cuts? the outer I see as the start of a picture frame (possibly easier if you cut a rebate in the inside when cutting out these frames...the inner circle waste a pot holder perhaps in other words a wooden mat you can safely put a hot pot on pan on if lifting off a cooker ?
@calholli7 күн бұрын
I think the thicker one is more practical.. It's probably harder to use if it's not thick enough to get your hand inside.
@goptools7 күн бұрын
Hi Jimmy. Love the design. The side frame is like a skeleton for the leather insert. I was wondering how practical a tool bag would be, using that same design, instead of a solid wood end panel. The end product might be too beautiful to actually put tools into though!

Using scraps is something i love doing as well, as a prop maker. You can always find some piece of extra fabric, foam or plastic that fits just about right on your next project and you dont go using up a brand new stretch of material for it. I was thinking, if you laser cut the side strips later on, since you have the measurements already, you could pre-laser out the rivet holes too instead of having to drill them out later on as long as the sizes stays the same through out the process.
@bysykler49597 күн бұрын
The wood hoop should be a bit more proud of the leather surface. Looks better and protects the edge of the leather.

@TheTomer19997 күн бұрын
Hey jimmy I noticed the leaser “leaks” offset to the cut line when you cut the side panels I’ve had this problem on a similar machine The lens right behind the leaser’s tip gets distorted over its lifetime and replacing it fixed it for me! It took us a while to figure it out…

Rather than having the extra piece of leather sewn on to make the snap closure nice and smooth, why not take advantage of the CNC? Cut the outside circular as you have done but cut the inside track slightly oval to account for where the closure is? Also, what about a buckle to make the strap adjustable?
