The cement walls that you show in the video are not concrete all the way through. Vertically in the centre is a wall of steel. They were old trams lines from London that were turned on their ends and driven by pile-drivers into the earth at the time of the 1953 flood as the initial attempt to close the breach in the old mud wall that the sea and destroyed. It was many years later that this steel structure was clad in the thick concrete you now see.

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not...but... It was Dutch engineers who were brought over in the 17th century to build Canveys original sea wall who lived in the tiny "Dutch" houses. Many of them were paid in land on Canvey after they had finished. That's why many of the road names up towards the "Point" end of the island have weird-sounding Dutch names.

Hi Miss Smiles Here's what I found. Canvey Island lies off the South East coast of Essex in the Thames estuary The Thames Estuary is where the River Thames meets the waters of the North Sea, in the south-east of Great Britain. The Canvey Island town Council also calls it seafront and they have sea walls.

There are many roads with Dutch names on the Island, Sydervelt Rd, Paarl Road, Winterswyk Avenue and many others but sadly the romantic notion that they were name by the Dutch engineers who came to Canvey at the request of land owner who livid in Benfleet to claim the land from the sea is a myth. Canvey was being developed a the turn of the last century and a gentleman who name escapes me but who was one of the developer thought it a good idea to give some of the roads Dutch names.

@@teenamacgillivray9405 Hi Teena, I am intrigued. Your surname is certainly British but the spelling of your first name is not. You also look to me to be part Asian, perhaps Chinese and the language used by others in reply to your comments I cannot understand even though I am a linguist. I am guessing at Malay or Indonesian but could be entirely wrong. Please put me out of my misery. I lived on Canvey until I was 27 and have many happy memories. Great place to grow up. I now live in South Africa but you videos and those posted by others take me back to Canvey.

@@Robob0027 hi Rob yes you are right I am Asian, from the Philippines. Glad this video brought back memories. We were glad we managed to visit Canvey even for a quick visit as we always wonder what it looks like.
