Great insight Jack, thanks! This is was of the most interesting mtb videos I've ever watched. So good to see a pro racer's thought process. I would have never guessed one would choose the "older" geometry bike to race on, but it makes sense the way you explained it. If you could have Canyon make a custom frame just for you to race on what would the geo and travel be like? Also, since you like sharing your set up, can you do a video on tyre choice? What's your favourite tread and what changes do you do for different track conditions? Cheers & good luck at the races!

That was a solid explanation of geometry differences in both bikes and the way it changes which is more suitable in different circumstances. As a newbie it puts in perspective what you need to consider when looking for an all rounder to suit your local trails, when researching it’s easy to be hypnotised into thinking long and slack with steep STA is the best way, for a plodder like me who is never charging anything more than Glenrock, Awaba XC, Stromlo, Thredbo flow etc I am glad I went with ‘conservative’ geo. Shortish wheel base, 140/130, 66 HTA, 75 STA. Cheers for the vid, enjoying following your journey.

Thanks for this one and great to hear your thought process on your decision! And while so many wonder how an updated strive will look like, maybe there is no real reason to update it (a lot), since these two bike complement each other and offer distinct advantages... I'm also surprised that both bikes apparently work so well even with 180 mm in the front, but good to know how different you can set them up. Right now I'm happy with my 150 pike Speccy. Cheers and good luck!

Jack, when I started watching was very curious how this would go and have to say, you did a bang up job, especially with the breakdown of the ride characteristics of both bikes and how it can effect you depending on what sort of riding you're doing. Especially good point comparing racing DH to Enduro, where practice is limited, no sense running your own trails all the time and getting faster and faster, saying that slack & long is best, when that won't be the case on most Enduro races and will likely not remember every corner and need to make some split second reaction, decisions when you come on a tight corner you forgot about. Only thing I will say that I think is a bit "weird" is that you put a 180mm fork on both, which for the Strive is only 10mm than stock, whereas for the Spectral it's 30mm more travel, so the geo of the Strive would only have changed about 1/2 degree, whereas the Spectral would have changed by about 1.5 degrees, making it somewhere around 63 degrees HTA and the Strive a 64.5 degree HTA, which is actually closer to the Spectral geo with stock 150mm travel fork. To me this says you want geo of the Spectral or close, but based around 180mm travel in the fork with a less progressive suspension. Now this all really doesn't add up just saying travel, you need to have a specific A2C height to compare, because if you just compare the CF7 to CF8 version of the Spectral, the CF7 comes with a 150mm RS Lyric and the CF8 comes with a 160mm FOX F36, but then the Strive V7 comes with a 170mm Fox F36 and the V8 comes with a 170mm Lyric. So it seems on the Spectral they're changing travel to make sure the A2C matches, but not on the Strive? :-\
@exhibitD793 жыл бұрын
I think the GEO changes are more on the Strive as there is a spacer under the Head Tube (as many Canyon pro racers add) to increase H/A

Thanks Mate, tried to describe what I felt, wasn't sure if that would translate properly to others. Yeah to make a long story short, basically I want to run 180 up front for the gnarly tracks over here.. It comes in at 63.1 on the spectral, and 64 on the strive. I didn't think this would be too bad as some bikes are running 63.5 HA stock. I really need to play around with angle sets on spectral to do this properly, didn't have the time or resources this year (have been on a pike for the last few months at home). I'm trying to see what is the better bike for me to race enduro on, and there is no chance I'll ever be running a 150 fork for that, so I can't match A2C of stock bike.

Haha. 21.51 "I'm no enduro expert". So it's beginner's luck then? This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a 2020 Strive CF9.0, which I love. I've been thinking about how much it would cost me to make the jump to a Spectral CFR, and honestly, I can't afford it right now. I love the Strive for where I'm riding, and one of my local tracks got a mention, AWABA downhill. I love exploring new places though, and with your wise words (and hard work) Jack, I think I don't need to worry about jumping bikes. What I have is good for me, so not surprisingly, it just feels right on most stuff. The thing is with factory direct bikes, it is hard to get a test ride, so this hard earned info from a "non-enduro expert" (read, enduro world champ) is gold. Finally a really, really good comparison! And good choice, mate!! Surprised I found myself being nervous for what you would say in the end - since I couldn´t find any real good comparison when I chose myself this winter - but ended up choosing the 2021 Strive eventually for the technical, rocky and tight trails here on the west coast of Sweden. Thanks for confirming my theory! I would also like to add that in "click-mode" the Strive turns into a really good pedaling and climbing trail bike or even borderline XC bike, especially with lighter tires and if you slam the seat all the way forward. One bike to rule them all! :)
@moimoitv_3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can't really go wrong with either bike, but sounds like you made a good decision. I did forget to mention that in the video of the strive! but if I raced the spectral I would of ran a rear shock lockout anyway so would of been similar.
@AlejandroGarciaIglesias2 жыл бұрын
Great insights Jack! Would you recommend the Spectral to a more beginner rider that wants to race the occasional local enduro since it seems it would trade in some comfort and some seconds in tighter/techier stuff but provide more safety/stability and have a bit of pop for fun due to the progressivity? Also if that's the case, would you recommend to the same rider to flip the chip to the high setting for tighter/techier or unknown tracks?

Mad dog, have ya tried the spectral in a M with a touch longer stem? Like 45 or 50? Would give you the reach of the strive and would be as easy to weight the front and only 8mm shorter wheelbase than the strive.. I reckon the spectral feels better in the fast chunk because of head angle not just longer wheelbase, you don’t get as hung up with a slacker head angle as it lets the fork push back from impacts a lot smoother rather than “catching” if that makes sense. Peace out. Rooter

Great video. I think your point about riding on a track you don't know vs. riding one you're very familiar with is really insightful. Like most good insights, it sounds really simple when explained, but yet I've never heard anyone point it before! I am curious though - with 180mm forks on both bikes the Spectral must be really slack, maybe below 63 degrees (?). Do you think the Spectral could be faster with either a shorter fork (160-170) or an angleset to bring the head angle back to 64-64.5?

Yeah this was super important for Me. I noticed this at my first world enduro in 2016. I had my bike setup for park laps super stiff and I couldn’t hang on for a 15 minute stage. Man do you prefer speccy pike or zeb?
@moimoitv_3 жыл бұрын
It feels a lot better with the pike as this is what it’s designed for. Or if you just run a lower travel Zeb, I would have to play around with angle sets for the 180 set up.

anyone else confused here, the sort travel bike is longer and slacker?

Not sure why everyone thinks the spectral is shorter travel than the strive?
@niklasdr3 жыл бұрын
@@moimoitv_ well, out of the box, Strive fork is 170 and Spectral 160 or even 150. Many think rear travel always reflects fork travel. If someone could explain why Strive geo pairs with longer fork travel, that would be great!

Wait a 180 on the spectral??? Jesus, Do you know what head angle you end up with with putting a 180 on the spectral?
@moimoitv_3 жыл бұрын
Nah not sure, will check with Tommy. Next off season I will play around with angle sets and stuff for it, cause it is pretty slack with the 180. Just didn't have any of the parts to do it this time due to the lack of supply from the pandemic.
@chadsugden4113 жыл бұрын
@@moimoitv_ Yeah bro it would be probably sitting around 63 degrees I reckon haha, no wonder she’s felt a little sluggish in the tight stuff haha 😂 Fkn pandemic strikes again ey with the parts... You”ll smoke em, no matter the rig anyways cheif. Good luck 😉

@@chadsugden411 Yeah just checked with Tommy, it was sitting at 63.13. Definitely too slack. Few bikes running 63.5 stock though... Need to try that set up with an offset headset this off season!
