Judging by those aero watts, at least i think your numbers are just aero watts, at 30kmh we must have roughly the same CdA of around 0.38. I am getting very similar numbers on my tcr with 50mm wheels (tested outside). Good to see the round bar wasn't detrimental, maybe even quicker by decreasing the freestream velocity before it hits your legs.

Out of those 2 I’d go Giant all day. If it was between the last gen Ultimate then I’d have gone Canyon. The changes to the Canyon have not made it a better bike. Just more of a compromise. I’d also like to see what they are like inside. What’s the carbon layup like? Frame straightness and tolerances? After seeing Mapdec’s video of the Canyon Endurace and how that turned up and the fact Canyon are still turning out the Aeroad with a huge seatpost issue, I’d be staying well clear of Canyon from now on.

I’ve never ridden a TCR so can’t comment on that, but I just received my new Ultimate a few weeks ago and love it. I’ve wanted one for a few years ever since trying one at the NEC Bike Show, and the right bike came along at the right time (same spec and colour as your test one there actually!), and it’s such a nice ride, just puts a proper smile on my face every time I head out on it!

At first: I bought the Ultimate and I love it. I didn't had the possibility to test the TCR before, but I like the Design of the Ultimate and I live just one hour from Canyon/Koblenz. For most of us regular driver the aerodynamic differences should be more theory. As you said before in the first video with the wind tunnel, the position on the bike makes the biggest difference.

I have both of these bikes, 2019 Ultimate CF SL (Ultegra) and 2021 Giant TCR ADV PC 2 (105). I got the Giant for climbing group rides, it's 50/34 crankset is perfect for tackling SoCal's hills and the Canyon (52/36 crankset) is preferred on flats, especially paved bike trails and paceline rides. I love them both, David is right about the Giant it is a bit smoother where as the Canyon's ride feels racier. Thanks David, for the review of my bikes.
@arpatoz
@arpatoz Жыл бұрын
As simple it is, the main difference in your results seems to be coming from the stem length difference. You have lower drag due to your position on Giant, and any difference in bike aerodynamics won't compare to that. However, this still makes Giant TCR the much better bike for a very basic reason. It is not just difficult to change the stem length on Canyon; it is IMPOSSIBLE. Aeroad and Ultimate are both using the CP0018 integrated cockpit, and to this date, it has not been possible to buy the cockpit separately. You are locked in to what comes with the bike unless you can find someone to swap the cockpit with. And I've seen several reviews finding the stem length on Aeroad and Ultimate (e.g., 100mm on size medium) too short. Look at all the forums; so many people are looking for a CP0018 with a longer stem. I just don't understand how no one complains about this, and none of the Aeroad or Ultimate reviews mention this. If you have the new Aeroad or the new Ultimate, YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE STEM LENGTH. You are buying a bike on which you cannot make one of the most basic bike-fit adjustments. Good luck!
@alpsatiroglu
@alpsatiroglu Жыл бұрын
First of all thanks for this content. However going for all the hassle comparing the bikes in the wind tunnel you could simply change the stem on the giant to match the reach on the canyon. This would give more reliable results. You look more upright on the canyon possibly because of the shorter reach.

It's worth noting the rider's body makes up for 80% of the aero influence, where the bike itself makes up for only 20%... so your riding position (and size) is what matters most. Crunching the numbers on the bike itself, though a factor, shouldn't be the end-all be-all driving force of your bike purchase, especially if you're not a professional racer. Buy what you like. @3:30 vs @3:40 - look at his body position from the Canyon to the Giant - you can easily see his body position is lower (more aero) on the Giant. I am NOT advocating for Canyon here, nor am I bashing Giant (I ride a Bianchi)... just want to note the point.
@lucassu9099

Yeah. It seems to me that the reach difference (definitely not just a 10mm difference on stem) caused him a 20-30mm difference in height.

I have an older Canyon Ultimate, so i was admittedly looking for faults here to make myself feel better 😄 I noticed the different position - it seems like his saddle is slightly further back on the TCR, and his shoulders and head are lower. He said that the aero lab engineers make efforts to ensure the rider is in an identical position, so it is surprising they didn't notice this. Maybe he changed position during the test or it's a trick of the camera perspective.

He already said in the video that the wind tunnel equipment helps him maintain very close positions on both bikes. A few seconds of video means nothing. Besides, the camera recording those segments of the video was positioned slightly differently - you can clearly see that if you focus on the stationary elements of the scene, such as the door frame. Funny how you noticed his ever so slight apparent difference in positions but can’t see the difference with the fixed elements of the scene.

Wow. Mind blown. This really amazes me. Please keep these tests coming. They'd be the best guide for future buyers. I don't care about subjective reviews much- "keeping the speed" really depends on the environment. But the wind tunnel test really matters to me. Please keep those coming. Currently I'm trying to decide between a Rose Xlite 06 and a litening race c68x from Cube. Wind tunnel data would really help that decision, but I know you don't have them. Just keep it coming, and build that library of wind tunnel data.

The difference in 10 watts is not just based on aero. It can be in the bb bearing drag, frame alignment, tolerances etc. A better quality bike will use less watts to move. I hope the power meter used was the same on both bikes.

Great content here David, well done. Reading the comments, it makes sense to test with and without a rider. With different bike geometries creating another variable in rider position, it makes it hard to really point the finger at either frame as being more or less aero when mm in body position change make such a difference as covered in the last video showing a 70w difference by just getting forearms level from an upright position. On a side note, it would’ve been cool to see how they compared in their stock form with the wheels/tyres they are sold with, given the argument about value coming up, one has average house brand wheels, the other has a much more premium set. Keep up the good work!

Long time tcr adv sl owner here. 2015 model. Still a great bike and no slower than my more modern 'aero' bike. Mainly to do with agressive position, long stem etc. Cables and tube shapes not particularly relevant differentiators at this level; the rider is always the limiting factor. As for giant vs canyon, the value propsition is as its always been: a heavily-marketed direct to consumer model where warranty/ support issues can be an issue with outsourced manufacturing, vs a bike actually made in house and sold to the consumer through actual shops with a good quality, warranty and after sales service..

I appreciate your effort to compare bikes, but as I mentioned in the last video, I'm afriad that despite many things that you considered, you were still not fair in comparision - you used different bottle cages (why use them in the first place?), different stack heigth, stem length (what about handlebar width?) and drivetrain components... Also, how many km were made by each bike? If Canyon is new and TCR was already "broken-in", than this could make a difference. Also, how was the chain maintained/prepared? And how did you achieve the same position on the bikes if the stem on Canyon was too short? All 5 contact points (handlebar, pedals, seat) should be at exactly the same spot and even then it is difficult to completely repeat the position on bike. We are talking here about difference of just few watts, it coud be anything (bottle cage?...) or simply inside standard deviation. How many repeats were made? Is it possible that in first repeat, tires were not warmed up? There are so many factors that can influence and if you rely on a single try for each bike, you can make an error... I just want to say, that such test can show diffference between one try or another or between one setting to another, but I don't think it is fair to generalize and to conlcude that one bike is better than the other. Also, I think that such tunnel, which measure your watts is good to check your position on a bike, but comparing bikes, which represents very small portion of drag is very difficult if not impossible.

Giant has just had really good prices over the last few years and that's that! These 2 bikes compared spec for spec groupset wise in Ulterga 12sp Di2 there is a HUGE difference in price for the Ultimate CF SLX version as in the video, Canyon is £6449 vs Giant £4999. That's £1450 difference for a same spec groupset bike! Even with the DT swiss 1400 Arc wheelset coming in at around £1700, giants SLR 1 will probably still be enough for the average cyclist. Still has ratchet hub for quick engagement and 42mm depth plenty deep enough for the majority of people going at 30kph. The difference will be in the frame as you can go down to the CF SL 8 and then the price is matched with Canyon being £4949 vs Giant £4999. So i would say the CF SL is the more sensible competitor for the giant TCR pro 1 advanced disc. But the only downside is with Canyon being direct to consumer and if something is wrong then its a headache to fix it, either send it back (TO GERMANY) or get a bike shop to look at it and canyon to approve a job quote for the amount the bike shop will ask to fix their mess. The later is slightly awkward with the bike shop selling bike brands then you asking to fix your direct to consumer bike which may be causing them a loss.

I had a 2015 Giant TCR Adv Pro and now a 2020 TCR Adv Pro 1 Disc. Whilst they might not be the fanciest bikes around, it is hard to argue the bang for buck. When it's time for a new bike, the next Giant TCR will be top of the shopping list, and I would need a lot of convincing to go to another brand. I never used SRAM gear, but from my research, never will. More expensive, heavier, and based on this wind tunnel testing, quite possibly not as efficient either (surely the frame alone can't make that much difference - given the Canyon has "aero" bars).

Top review and really an eye-opener as looking at Canyon´s frontal area (fork and integrated handlebar) I deeply believed that the TCR had alot worst CdA. Thank you!

I think the difference came down to riding position. The TCR doesn't pass the eyeball test. Also, if we're testing how aero a bike is, why is there a rider on it?

Hi Dave, greetings from Singapore. In fact, I bought and still have 2 TCRs and a Defy after watching your reviews. Thanks for the great reviews. Btw, looking at the C68 for the next project 😅. Have you tested the aerodynamics for this beautiful Colnago? Cheers

What saddles are on each bike? The TCR appears to have carbon rails, the Canyon has alloy or Ti rails, yes? Try the saddle from the TCR on the Canyon-does ride quality come closer to TCR then? Also, for ride quality comparison, you might use same wheels on both bikes, as you did for the wind tunnel experiments.

I used same wheels and tyres on the road and wind tunnel and put the saddle from the Giant into the Canyon for this reason

Very interesting, David. Do you have any sense as to what your preference would be if you were comparing the Canyon Ultimate CFR against the Giant TCR Advanced SL 0?

considered these 2 bikes recently and settled on the TCR advanced pro 0 - it has grown on me once loosened up a bit - second time I have come close to buying Canyon but now have 5+ Giants in family - Giant feels solid in straight line not super agile but handling and compliance outstanding for a race bike - and the new Propel looks tempting - I think Giant still ahead?

I believe the new Propel is light enough to make the TCR redundant.

I love the testing but your riding position was a little lower on the TCR, maybe by 2 inches? Obviously super hard to be dead on exact given the difference in stem length.

Trying to decide between a Defy and TCR. Is the Defy really that much more comfortable for longer rides?
@davidmurphy3558

Some people aren’t as flexible. The Defy has a taller head tube than the TCR which is the primary frame geometry difference between them.

The fork on the TCR “bows” out a bit more than the Ultimate. That could account for a few watts difference.

I’m 5’10”. I know you ride medium at 5’11”. Canyons site puts me on a size small. My concern is stem will be too short since 1 inch taller puts me on a medium. Any suggestion ?

I'd be interested to see the wind tunnel results using the same set of wheels to better indicate the impact of the frame shape. The Giant looks like it had deeper wheels, so not that fair to compare.

Both great bikes. Haven't seen a Giant win a race in quite some time. But I've seen Canyon win a lot lately including today's Paris-Roubaix

I have bought the Canyon ultimate cf sl 8 with di2 ultegra and carbon wheels (2023), this one is €5000 the specs of the TCR are similar to this bike. The new model of the TCR is €5900 only the wheels are slightly better I think. So I do not agree with the price comparison made in this video.

I think it’s the body position that is affecting the results. If you look at it closely, your body is a bit up right when riding Canyon Ultimate.

He clearly states that the wind tunnel monitors help him maintain a very close position on both bikes. And you think you know better just by watching a 3 seconds segment? I think some Canyon fanboys can’t accept the results.
