Perhaps I'm biased as I ride a Giant at the moment, but it's got to be the TCR hasn't it? The Tarmac is clearly a very good bike, but £4250 for the S-Works frameset vs. £2600 for the TCR Advanced SL one makes it a non-contest in my book.

Not really. I used to own the TCR first. Sold it to get the SL7. Both are very capable bikes. But I already own a very very comfy full suss bike I use for enduro riding. So having a “comfy” tcr was an overlap. Hence I went for the unapologetic racey SL7 to make a even bigger distinction between my two bikes. So it’s not always a value preposition that matters. In a hobby, you just buy what you can afford, value for money he damned.

Great review, interesting and useful. Any bike that is better looking and more comfortable gets my vote. Even if the Tarmac were clearly faster, which does not seem to be the case, most amateurs and maybe even some pros would benefit from a less “busy” ride.

Now looking at the 2 again after 2 years, the TCR looks more timeless & the SL7 looks somewhat dated, and the SL8 seems bashfully trying to become a modern TCR (?). Never mind the external cable routing as it looks ‘purposeful’ somehow

SL7 feels faster because it offers more rigid, busy ride. I sold my SL6 S-Works last year, looked at Giant TCR and Bianchi, and went with Bianchi Specialissima at the end. I’ve placed an order for a TCR advanced pro so that’s where my vote goes! I’m the person you describe in the video, not a racer but wants a nice fast bike to ride around on just not necessarily flat out all of the time. It’s hard to argue with the value that Giant offer compared to other brands; it’s already difficult justify 5k on a bicycle but to match specs on some of the other brands was going to be significantly more and I’ve got no issue with my frame saying Giant rather than Trek or Specialized

totally agree!!! Have had my new TCR Advanced Pro Disc 1 for 10 days now. I've owned a few real nice upper end bikes & so far this one tops them. I find it super fast and plenty stiff for my ole bones...but the ride is amazing comfortable. Kudos to Giant and the upgrades. I could care less about hiding all the cables & wires....I guess I was used to my previous Super Six Evo Hi Mod Disc.

Hello David. Great reviews and comparisons! You've given the Giant TCR Advanced Pro high marks a number of times now. I've been riding a 2011 Specialized Roubaix Comp for 10 years, and am now ready for an upgrade. Back when I first demoed a number of bikes before making my purchase, the Tarmac was my favorite for performance, but I kept gravitating back to the Roubaix for the comfort of the ride after my three back surgeries. But the Roubaix's handling with a taller stance was twitchy and nervous through tight turns, which was instantly resolved when the dealer flipped the stem downwards and matched the front geometries from the Tarmac to the Roubaix. The down side to my 2011 SL2 Roubaix is that I've been plagued with terrifying speed wobbles that are easily triggered by crosswinds, or washboard irregularities in the road, that have never been resolved after three BG fittings! With that I'm now on a mission. I recently rode a tricked out S-Works Aethos at the Specialized Experience Center in Boulder and was instantly 'one with the bike'. It was an awesome ride right out of the gate ... climbing steep grades, bombing down Lee Hill while smacking the handlebars to try to induce a speed wobble, and cruising the back roads with a huge smile on my face. But I can't afford an $11,000 S-Works Aethos! Specialized tried to tell me that an Aethos Pro would be close to the same ride as the S-Works with racing tires, etc., but again the $8,500 sticker price is awfully steep. I never would have known about a Giant TCR Advanced Pro until I just stumbled onto 'Just Ride Bikes' and your reviews! I would like to see a side by side comparison of the Giant TCR Advanced Pro and the Aethos Pro ... "Would the rides be as comfortable and enjoyable, with no speed wobbles?" Would that be doable? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thanks for the great review. I would pick the TCR based on more comfort, value for money and comparable speed to the Tarmac. I have a 2022 version in amber colour which is very nice to look at. I recently put some 30 mm Pirelli P Zero tyres on and new handlebar tape on my TCR which has made the ride very comfortable with no reduction in speed. In fact I believe I am riding faster because I have more confidence on the road. I cannot afford to upgrade the wheels but am happy with the stock ones. Would be interested to see how TCR compares to Aethos, much closer perhaps. For the time being I'll stick to my old Sworks Tarmac SL4 rim brake bike, below 6.8kg and built up for about the same as these two, with a likely even better level of ride quality and performance. Barring the brakes - which aren't necessary anyway for an experienced rider - I don't see how these modern disc bikes beat that... unless ones willing to spend near 10k, which most riders aren't.
@lazyrider6918

EXACTLY...Specialized are OUT OF CONTROL with their prices now and the weight of these bloated mid range disc brakes for $5k are a joke. My SL3 Tarmac Project Black with 10 speed Ultegra weighs 16.6 lbs with cages, pedals and GPS mount. Why would I pay $10K for a new Specialized that to get the same weight for disc brakes that really don't matter??? People have been duped.
@nellyx1x493
@nellyx1x493 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If one has nice 'legacy' wheels and groupset and it comes to needing a new frame when increasingly mainstream manufacturers aren't making them, I'd rather spend more to go custom rim frameset in any material than buy a whole new disc bike. Cant help but think SP are missing a trick by not making an Aethos frame available in rim brake and fittings for mechanical group, this could be near frame perfection for many riders and I'm convinced there'd be a market for it...make it available in Pro as well as Sworks level and they'd gain a lot of customers. The weight of the tested above is closer to my hardtail mountain bike than my road bike.

@@nellyx1x493 The Aethos is the ONLY current Specialized that I would consider with disc option. But I still would want a rim brake option. People don't realize that the entire feel and road dynamics are changed to compensate for disc brake forces on a frame. A rim brake bike is more nimble and quicker by its nature. The super wide tire is also horseshit.

In China Giant TCR pro is absolutely the best choice for an amazing cheap price. It costs about 4700dollars to buy the 0class.And the tarmac sl7 comp is about 4950dollars. Maybe the frameset is not better than the tarmac sl7 10r but the carbonwheels SLR1 is fairly good for group training&daily riding. If you would like to upgrade your settings for climbing and city transport maybe specialized is availabe for the open tire rather than tubeless it is easy to fix and change and if you change Dt470 to alpinist series,you go into a new world.

Damn, that's heavy. My massive xl Ridley Fenix SL that I paid €1400, barely used, full Ultegra weighs the same as those bikes, at 8kg, with cheap enough Zonda alu wheels. Rides amazing and is not so slammed on the front. Oh, did I mention its rim brakes. Love them.

So in objective terms, the TCR is cheaper, lighter and is about equal to the Tarmac on the timed sections? The TCR wins hands down, it's no competition. Even the subjective elements cancel out - TCR with more comfort vs Tarmac with better looks

David, another fantastic video! I badly want to get the TCR Advanced Pro, partially due to your reviews but sadly there is no stock at all in my size. However I just came across the new 2022 Trek Emonda SL 6 which comes stock with the new SRAM Rival eTap AXS in my size! Could you please do a comparison of these two?! I'm hoping the Emonda is compliant like the TCR, the Tarmac would be too stiff for me. Thanks and keep it up!!

Amazed how heavy disc these bikes are. These are 1kg heavier than my old size large canyon endurace was out of the box. They're also the same weight as it is now with pedals and hardshell tyres sturdier rebuilt wheel and a few other cheaper 105 bits. But they don't half look good so I would have bought the giant frameset if I could find one!

Giant has had great success with press fit bottom bracket. Specialized and Trek.....Not so much. Exposed cables much easier to service and pack for trips. Don't like dropped seat stays. Much prefer the classic look and paint of the TCR. Giant wins... going away!

Everyone has their own preferences in terms of what looks good, but as someone being 1.6m tall, I've got to say that Tarmac looks way better in my size. And since small sizes doesn't sell that well, I've got a really nice deal in terms of price - I'll just leave this information here because no one really talks about smaller sizes :D

£5.5k. 8kg. No pedals. So 8.5kg with cages, mount and pedals… So heavier and little more aero than a 10year old bike. TCR is the better bike here. My lad’s 2019 TCR with 105 cost £1500 new and weighs 7.5kg. Hmm, evolution?

TCR seem to be the better value of the two but there is something better value than TCR advanced pro though. It's TCR advanced 2021. Same frameset material with slightly narrower steerer tube (30% decrease in tortional stiffness according to Giant but probably nothing according to most people that aren't racing at high level)

I'll take the sl6 over both. More round tubeshapes like the giant. And much more comfortable and more importantly much cheaper. No integrated cockpit, put a set of carbon wheels on and still wayy under budget from what these 2 bikes cost
