I backpacked the Confluence trail back in the seventies. The level of silence out there is uncomfortable. It takes a day or so to get used to it. Sometimes I thought I could hear my hair growing, lol Incredible park!

All the shorter hikes are great for those who don’t have a lot of time. My longest hike in the needles was taking the Elephant Hill trail to the Chesler Park overlook. Many people hike some additional miles doing the Chesler Park Loop. I wouldn’t mind hiking to the confluence, but most online forums say Chesler Park is the better hike. Make sure to bring lots of water and try to avoid hiking during the really hot months.

Thanks Steve. I always wondered if there was much to see in the Needles district. Now I know there is, even if you don’t have a vehicle that can handle the jeep trails or the driving skills to explore them. I’ve always wanted to see the confluence overlook but I’m I probably won’t ever get to.

Thanks! fyi- while doing the research for this since i got back i’ve read the road to the confluence isn’t that bad- so my all wheel drive Hyundai may be able to make it. The Needles is a nice place- i’d like to go back when the sun is out. Nice Scenery too.

@@TheWestisBig Yes it does look nice. I noticed some of the buttes in the background and such. My CR-V is not awd unfortunately. Also I am not sure how good its clearance.

Cactus - in Mexico we call them "tunas" some are green or pink and they are extremely delicious! They have seeds and you spit them out as you eat them. Also the Cactus is aso edible - we take the thorns off very carefully. You can season them and grill them as a side for a cook out with Carne azada! Also, cut them into small cubes and make a cold salad with onions, tomatoes and Cilantro.
