Islay’s hidden gem, nestled down at the sleepy bay of Caol Ila lies the islands biggest distillery. Like all of Islay’s distilleries Caol Ila is surrounded in some if Scotland’s most beautiful scenery. Sitting on the edge of the sound of Islay, Caol Ila stands tall and proud alongside the fast flowing water separating Islay from Jura making it one of the most picture perfect settings for a distillery.
Caol Ila is Islay’s giant, producing more than double the spirit of the other distilleries on the island. Purpose built to produce over 7 million litres of spirit each year, Caol Ila distillery allows visitors to see large scale whisky production at its best. Don’t let the size fool you though, the passion of the people at the distillery ensures that all 7 million litres contains the same fresh, light smokiness typical of the Caol Ila 12 year old. Much of its large scale production is used to keep some of the world’s most famous and enjoyed blends in steady supply.
With a larger range available than her sister distillery Lagavulin, Caol Ila offers a variety of different expressions to suite the different tastes including a delightedly sweet unpeated Stitchell release which shows that even without the Islay peat Caol Ila would be an outstanding malt.

It was a long and winding road but I have now made it from ep. #1 to #100. Been slowly catching up to 'old school' dummies. I jumped in with you guys early summer 2016 and sampled old reviews on bottles I either owned or was considering for purchase. I am now catching up on all of them. Look forward to another 100 episodes! Congratulations. I think there is a NAS Caol ila Moch which is meant to be less peated or non peated i think but i am not too sure. I have a bottle but havent opened it yet and the box doesnt give too much info about the contents apart from usual marketing speech. The cask strength Caol Ila by independent bottlers Gordon and Macpahil are worth seeking out i have a few in the collection. 59%abv

Had a dram at a restaurant in SD a few weeks ago. Yummy. Nice smoke and peat that doesn't overwhelm the rest of the flavors. Looking for a bottle for an occasional sipper.

Congratulations on your 100th STDs! I am pleased to see you went back to the first SMW you reviewed. I think re-reviews are necessary to understand appreciation. This is important when drinking a batched whisky such as a the Glenlivet 16yo Nadurra and The Aberlour A'bunadh. In addition, as our palates have experienced a variety of whiskies over a period of time. Cheers! Last note, any chance you will be reviewing the Aberlour 12yo Non-Chilled filtered? I just got a bottle and I look forward to getting into it.

Well, I look forward to it. I am hoping it is the non-chilled filtered 12yo, seeing that they have another that is chilled filtered. The way I remember it, the 12yo non-chilled filtered is in a white cylindrical container with a white-ish label. Cheers. Oh yes, I just had a few drams of the Yamazaki 12yo, and it truly is a lovely whisky. It has definitely moved up on the "to buy" list.

As a tea aficionado, that "meaty" mouth feel is often referred to as umami in the tea community. It's kinda the same meatiness you might get from mushrooms.
