I remember this story. It used to be part of the animated tales from around the world. I thought it was something a little similar to a Cinderella tale.

It's in the Cinderella family for sure! The rules of Cinderella are generally 1. the hero is persecuted, usually by family, 2. they have a magical helper (not sure this one counts in that case), 3. they meet a romantic interest in disguise 4. their disguise is revealed and 5. they get married.
