Capacitive sensors are based on the all or nothing principle. Are there any capacitive sensors that change the output signal (analog) according to each material detected? I need an analog sensor, please help me
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the only options so far are to use an assortment of sensors to differentiate materials. As you mentioned the capacitive sensor is only capable of measuring the dielectric properties of a sensed material and reacting accordingly when a threshold is reached. An cluster of capacitive, inductive, optical (color and reflectivity, magnetic and other sensors is a good start but the property possibilities of materials are extremely wide.

Hi. Great demonstration :) Actually, I am building a waste segregator which separates plastics, glass and paper. Is it possible to differentiate between wastes using this capacitive sensor? Or do I have to purchase some other sensor for this purpose? Please help me out.
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 7 жыл бұрын
The types of sensor necessary will depend on the materials. Use an inductive sensor for metals and a capacitive sensor for non-metals. The difficult part is distinguishing between paper, plastic and other non-metal materials. I wold search for a sensor that can sense the dielectric proprieties of the material to help with that issue. Thanks for commenting.
@swastikmohapatra1382
@swastikmohapatra1382 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back to me. Capacitive sensors depend on the distance right? Which means the higher dielectric materials have a chance of getting detected at a greater distance than the smaller ones. Can I then use two sensors, one that detects plastic at a certain distance and rejects others and another one that accepts other kinds of waste? My main aim to is to separate bio and non biodegradable waste.
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, Capacitive sensors can possibly determine material using distance, in controlled situations, but it would be very difficult to get consistent results. So much would depend on whether the material was wet or dry, thick or thin and other factors. I've noticed that many recycling faculties seem to focus on material handling methods to separate material on the fly. Properties such as material density (paper/non-paper), ferrous/non-ferrous are easy to separate and what remains typically will require special methods such as those you are proposing. The problem is not a simple one. Good luck.
@swastikmohapatra1382

I am already using an Inductive proximity for separating metals. I guess I can develop some system by connecting 3 Capacitive proximity sensors and then averaging the detection value(around 20-30 samples) for a wide range of materials. That would at least give me a threshold of the most common waste like plastics, paper, wood, food waste etc.

Hi Dorian: i'm filling a bulk container with solids and can get a 24 vdc relay to activate when it receives a signal from the sensor. Question: how can I get the 24 vdc relay to activate with the disappearance of a signal from the sensor when the container is empty ?
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 6 жыл бұрын
You will really need two sensors. One sensor is used to detect when the container is filled and the other is used to detect when the container is low. The high level relay stops the fill and the low level relay begins the fill.
@ronaldm151
@ronaldm151 6 жыл бұрын
@@DorianMcIntire Hi Dorian: much appreciate the reply...the difficulty is the wiring of the two sensors. the low sensor to start a small 24 vdc motor when the level of the solids is low and the high sensor to turn it off when level if full.

Use a Normally open relay contact with the low-level sensor to fill and use the Normally Closed relay contact to stop the fill. The contacts should be connected in series with the pump or fill valve..

Sir, can I know by using this sensor and arduino, how do I know the value of each type of material is different ?
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 6 жыл бұрын
The capacitive is not selective in a useful way it is simply more sensitive to materials with high dielectric constants. Selecting a a material would require an array of different sensors each detecting a different property of the material.

@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 6 жыл бұрын
The output of the sensor is always digital (On/Off or 1/0) it is not an analog device so you cannot measure the dielectric properties directly. Getting a signal when the sensor is further provides an indirect indication of the dielectric properties. I would find another sensor, no doubt much more expensive, if I were you.

Sir I know that a capacitive sensor gives digital signal as output and hence can't be used to differentiate between materials. But i read somewhere that we can adjust it using arduino and set a threshold so that it gives one of the two binary signals above that value of capacitance and using this we can separate wet and dry materials as wet materials have significantly high capacitance. Can you help me how can this be done exactly?
@DorianMcIntire
@DorianMcIntire 4 жыл бұрын
I do not know of any way to make this purely digital sensor do more than merely sense a material. There are, no doubt, other sensors that are capable of providing an analog signal. Several sensors could work together, if each sensor was adjusted for a different sensitivity.

Skyler F It depends on the metal. Magnetic material such as iron or steel "short out" magnetic fields so magnetic fields will not pass through these metals. Non-magnetic metals such as copper or aluminum will allow only stationary magnetic fields to pass through but not moving magnetic fields. It all gets complicated and really depends on the application.
