Correct. In Sept. 2023, we had a very big swell event along our coastline (6-8m swell). It was a combination of a very high spring-high tide (tidal surges) and very large ocean swell (it was a record in some places and reported as 9-10m in some areas). This led to some really big waves and huge tidal surges. In contrast, this current event is quite different, as it was caused by a very strong cut-off frontal low pressure system and the storm surge was caused by gale-force onshore winds (blowing from ocean onto the shoreline). The swell is actually pretty small (approx. 2.5-3m), although the high tide is also quite high. Hope that helps anyone.

@@Livingmarks25 Keep in mind that almost the entire cape peninsula is affected by the south east wind. A few areas here and there are protected from it, but most places feel it (Locals are generally very used to it). It is slightly unusual to be experiencing such a strong S/East wind at this time of the year. Side note: (gale force SE wind + dark rain clouds=Black South Easter, but when only a steady 25-45km/h, it is more generally known as the Cape Doctor, and is a summer trade wind). Usually this time of the year is a slightly calmer, peaceful time, weatherwise, as the truly hot, summer days are over and the winter storms haven't arrived in full force yet. Fingers crossed you get the lovely clear, windless blue-sky days that we often experience throughout Autumn and Winter, usually between big storms. Cheers and be safe.

Brown foam, which is occasionally seen on our beaches from time to time is called surf foam or surf scum. It can be easily mistaken for pollution, but it isn't. It is a collection of millions of microscopic algae (bloom) and is a natural phenomenon. Also, brown sea foam is normal and generally nothing to do with pollution, but as a result of churned up stuff (usually river silt, but also from kelp beds being smashed against rocks etc) from the sea floor, and it is very common after high winds and big waves.

Even a person with 50% vision can see it, the same stuff that screwed the reverse osmosis plants in 2017, Waterfront and False Bay, it was sewerage. Remember the Day Zero lies? If that's kelp then I'll show you my cattle ranch in Adderley St. Also, we sailed up the West coast last year and could only stand 2 weeks at anchor in St Helena Bay, totally polluted. Spent 4 months in Saldanha, not so bad. All of our coast line is polluted. False Bay is particularly bad, even the fish have run away, ask the fishermen, they'll tell you.
