From the 1991/92 Hogmanay Live BBC Scotland broadcast, this is Capercaillie's version of Dick Gaughan's song originally to be found on his 1980 album "Handful of Earth" Capercaillie's version can be found on the Sidewaulk album.

Played this at Mum’s funeral a couple of years ago. She saw them in concert in Edinburgh in the early 90s and always remembered Donald’s introduction to the song - it was early on in the Balkan conflict and he said something about why the heck do Scots and English argue so much; things could be much worse. She’d met Dad whilst working in the Highlands in 1950 and for the last 20 years of her life lived in a village on the Northumbrian bank of the Tweed. This always makes me think of her.

I'm back for another fix coming up to Burns night. Karen Matheson is so beautiful and she has the voice of an angel. 30 years later I'm blown away and she is still singing with Capercaillie at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall next Saturday 29th Jan. 2022. Wish I could be there but I'm stuck in Thailand. Seamus Brennan.

Matheson is one of the finest singers of all time. Spend an hour with Beautiful Wasteland if you have any doubt about this claim. I love this band. The right blend of traditional and modern and always with impeccable taste.

She should be a model! USA women need such a role model to look up to and emulate!

Dick didn't actually compose this song. It is a rewrite of a much older song and he left out the last verse. His version is really nice...give a man his due!

+Louise Price The tune is his, though - and WHAT a tune.

He did put the tune to the existing words. Though saying that the said tune at the very least borrows heavily from "Canan nan Gaidheal". It is an exaggeration too when some people suggest the lyrics are rewritten. Changing a couple of words and leaving out a verse don't really constitute a rewrite.

I thought it was written by James Hogg in the 1800s, not by Dick Gaughan?

2018, so true. Our country had lost it's footing. Pray that the USA will recover from this dictators vile deeds.
