Making an automatic plant watering system. This is not my own idea or design but I liked the concept and felt that I could contribute to the capillary irrigation community

This may be a 5 year old video but you just answered a question about how to stop the water from evaporating when using this type of system outside. THANK YOU!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💕🌱

Love that you talk in your video and explain things. I’m tired of videos that have awful music playing in the background and absolutely no explanations or directions!

thanks so much! i have been watching many videos on this topic and your advice is the easiest for a beginner like me! the info about the rate of flow was really helpful to gauge if a second bottle is needed- great for longer vacations!

Really good. But I think that if the bottle lay down parellel to surface, dropping can be little more speedy and the bottle can be bigger alsoto get more days.

If the water source is higher than dropping it make gravitational watering not capillary.

Can this be done for underground watering of roots ? What if we whole set up is burried in the soil ..will the strings still provide water to lower roots of plant in ground ?
@365dongle3
@365dongle3 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that should work. You just need to make sure that the water will get to the roots, so use a straw again and just bury it in the ground.

Do you think if the strings were extended through the straws, so the plants needing watering in porous cloth containers sat on top of them, they would be able to draw the water as needed like they do in self watering container systems? Although the self-watering containers have the water supply at the bottom of the container with a wick connecting the soil to the water supply, rather than to the sides as this would be.

Hi Emily. The strings in this model do go right through the straws and come out the other end. This ensures the water gets through the straw. The straw acts as a conduit - there would be evaporation without it as the water travels very slowly. As long as your water source is higher than the destination you can direct it on to your capillary mat, which is what it sounds like you are using here. Just make sure you have enough of a supply to keep the mat moist. Some trial and error may be needed.

@@paulholzherr2993 After visiting your site I discovered that evidently if the water source is below the plant, the water will be sucked up by the roots against gravity when it is needed but if the water source level is higher than the plant, the water is forced out of the container and empties onto the plant by gravity which could lead to over watering. Also there are evidently some cheap watering systems you can use consisting of plastic tubing attached to a container/capsule with a removable lid with holes at the other end to allow the water to drip into the plant. A woman showed them being used to water plants throughout her house. The tubing extends to the bottom of a jar full of water and the end of the capsule sticks into the soil of the plant. The plant needs to be fully watered from the top before setting it up to work with of course the jar of water being placed below the plant.

hey paul.. thank you for sharing this video.. Wich wick you are using in this app ? Where can i buy it ?
@365dongle3
@365dongle3 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. The wick is jute string. I buy mine online on ebay. You should be able to use any organic string, so not polyester or nylon for example. Doing a test is always a good idea to see if the string transmits the water. Good luck!

Paul what if I get a trash can plastic throw those the string tied to a rock use fish pump tube but at the plant I make a lasso around the plant an cover it with soil

Hi ledgrowlabs. Sounds like an interesting set up that should work. Try it and see. Make sure the plant is lower than the water source. The capillary action seems to work best going downhill with gravity assist. Experiment is the way.

@@365dongle3 I read that water can only wick up 13 inches so I will have to experiment an see what container would be best thanks 4 sharing your way fits me intrigued so this can go into tents with a res out of a tent

Since you can only feel the jug up to where the holes are, why not put the holes in the top?
@365dongle3
@365dongle3 3 жыл бұрын
Good idea. You could try putting the straws in the top of the bottle instead of cutting into the side. A more elegant solution perhaps.
@rammix1
@rammix1 Жыл бұрын
Or you could do the contrary: connect the straws to the bottom of the bottle, as this would make a stronger water output. But you'll need to connect the straws to the bottle in a hermetic way to prevent unwanted water leaks. Also you'll need to use strings thick enough to sit in the straws tightly, otherwise the water will just flow bypassing the strings. Or you can use heatshrink tubes.
