SUBTITLES:
Capital steez was born Courntey Everald dewar Jr in the summer of 1993 to Jamaican parents
growing up in brooklyn in the 90’s he would be influenced and surrounded by music his whole life.
With rap legends like jay z, biggie, NAS, mos def, 50 and many more calling the borough their home, It wouldn’t be long before Courtney, now going by Jamal, would try his hand at rapping.
In 2009 at just 12, he released a joint mixtape called the yellow tape with his then best friend jahkari jack. And The two formed the rap group called Saturday morning breakfast
Fast forward to high-school and Jamal’s love for music was stronger than ever.
He attended Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School a public highschool where The Beastie Boy’s and even the legendary jean Michel Basquiat were all former students.
The school was founded as an alternative to traditional education and encouraged students to take interest in the arts.
As a highschooler steez and his friends would roam around the city skating and smoking and even going as far as to break onto campus after hours to skate around.
See Steez had become known around the school for his rhyming skills.
And One day while steez was in the cafeteria he walked up to a skinny freshman who had been filming raps and posting them to KZbin under the name JayOhVee, and asked if that was him.
That freshman was Joey bada$$
Because Murrow high encouraged art so much, students were given free periods to do any artistic activity they wanted.
So naturally steez and his new found friends would spend these scheduled times hosting cyphers in the hallways and recording out of loose studios.
The group of Steez, powers pleasant, Joey bada$$, and CJ fly would go bar for bar and come back each day trying to out-do each other and it wouldn’t be LONG before this group of talented young men would make their first big wave in the industry
in February of 2012 Joey bada$$ and Capital STEEZ released the song survival tactics.
within weeks survival tactics had garnered over a 100 thousand views and as of the recording of this video now sits at over 20 million.
Less than two months later in April of 2012 Capital steez was gearing up to drop his debut mixtape amerikkkan corruption.
Who’s name was inspired by the ice cube album amerikkka’s most wanted.
The number 47 played a big part in the album promo and steez described 47 as the perfect number.
While the two friends geared up to drop their debut mixtapes 1999 and amerikkkan corruption respectively
Joey was contacted by Jonny Shipes, the CEO of Cinematic Music Group, who had stumbled across a video of joey freestyling on KZbin.
Joey was just 16 at the time, but his mother worked out an arrangement with Shipes so the two could work together without signing any contracts until ready to do so.
Shipes tried everything in his power to convince Joey to leave the rest of pro era behind
But joey was adamant that Pro Era be a part of whatever situation they worked out.
Suddenly, the crew had the backing of a manager and a promotional team while most of its members were still in high school.
At the same time steez dropped out of the community college in Brooklyn that he had enrolled in, and started to hone his image,
growing out his signature dreadlocks and working hard to lose weight
Months later, steez had transformed from a chubby kid into a slim rapper with tattoos seemingly overnight.
As the two garnered more fame. Jonny would set up tours, music videos and publicity for strictly joey
and by the time joey was ready to drop his mixtape 1999 in June.
He already had 2 music videos ready to drop as well as several intervi......

I hate to say it but as I've traveled around the country, I've met a lot of folks like Steez. Brilliant talents with unbelievable inner beauty. So many of them end up on the street or dead. Some of them make it, most of them don't. Steez could have ended up embroiled in conspiracy and stuck in limbo or he could have reached the brilliance of the best rappers. We'll never know, but talent exists in a different category then success and that fact has a lot of significance in our loss of this undeniably genius artist.

Yeah but u know why kids like STEEZ and Thousands/millions not here? Because they wanted to do something about it and they was going for it. Joey badass now saying he was trying to take it slow, Like this is not something u chose, steez Seen a crack in the curtains and he was feeling to keep opening it more and more and more, Back then Joey would hear Steve's say some shxt and he be be like what the fuck👀 The adults in charge of promoting them Made sure To leave out steez if they could because They knew where steez mind And intentions were, Joey became aware with time of what steez was pushing with time, But he didn't choose to take a slow like hes saying now, You know capital steez and a lot of people didn't have The Choice they realized this shit bugs you out because no one is talking about it especially when you tell people and they look at u as crazy or tell u shut up it's like it push you to even go deeper it's not a choice, It only becomes a choice once you fully understand then it becomes a choice but when something is brand new you still want to keep going down the rabbit hole and fully understand, now a lot of people don't like it but people like capital steez, they was very curious and brave and they wanted to see the unseen and you know

R.I.P STEEZ ㄣ⃒ I still remember the first time I heard him on Survival Tactics, it was just 2 dope lyricists with so much energy. I’m only 18, I discovered STEEZ in 10th grade, so in like 2019, I remember just being so interested and felt extremely shocked to find out he’d been dead since 2012, but that didn’t stop me from going and hearing his discography. I just wish he’d waited a bit longer, he was ahead of his time and would’ve had so many fans rn. What makes it worse is that MF DOOM is gone now too, one of Steelo’s biggest inspirations. I know they’re up there cookin up classics but it really sucks to know that you can’t ever meet some of your biggest idols.

Steez put me on a great path with learning more about myself and the world we live in. He taught me how to look into things for myself and learn what my truth is. I even grew my hair out to try to get the free forms. One of the greatest minds to walk the earth. With the power to influence a nation. Glad to say I was 1 of those 15,000 who downloaded AK. In the end Joey was 100% more marketable, I have friends who are on steeze’s methodology about deep spirituality and esoteric stuff and as a friend I can understand it and vibe with it but as a business? Hell no. It’s not palatable as a business. The spiritual rabbit holes get DEEp and honestly depressing. I wish Steeze would have got some help or spoke to a therapist. I can’t imagine how Joey feels, losing a friend is one thing but the narrative of it being your fault it’s crushing

It was so fucking dope, and Steez along with Joey, Earl, Tyler, Kendrick Absoul, Asap Rocky, KRIT, and more im sure im missing were the people i always went to whenever an old head was tryna hate on new hip hop from the time. Now I’m 24 about to be 25 and I think a lot about my childhood, influence, old fiends and drugs I was doing at a young age, And I also think about how STEEZ was just a kid himself but the thing he was saying in his raps was shit I didn’t even think about. The mind is a truly a complicated thing we all go through especially as children and young adults. I just wish he stuck around a little longer and maybe lay off the drugs a little bit, I personally think that played a part cause they were experimenting. He would’ve most likely been the next DOOM if he was still here but maybe the pressure from the music industry got to him. I miss the dude like a long lost friend and revisit AK47 every year. I grew up in South Carolina, Steez put me on so much when I was just getting into pro era through other nyc based artists around 2012, I was so infatuated with nyc culture and the aesthetic Steez had was so captivating bc if you're from where I am you'd know we lack a variety of culture to say the least. He really put me onto spirituality and numerology at a very young age and to see things come full circle with how things are nowadays is wild. I recently got to visit Brooklyn a couple times this year and really walk the same streets they did, I visited the building in Manhattan and just smoked for about 4 hours, such a surreal feeling. Long Live Steelo, He's still out here man you just have to keep you eyes open and stay balanced.

Im kinda glad they didnt in a way. I guess i dont know much about it like how much of it was done, but after seeing the disgusting puppeteer “weekend at bernies” act they pulled with people like XXXTENTACION and Juice Wrld I’m a little relieved. Like not only did they stitch together and release X’s unfinished album Skins he had been working on before death, but they legit like took a bunch of fuckin random ass recordings and snippets and one off like hooks he had recorded accapella and all sorts of other shit to make “Bad Vibes Forever”. That was fucking nasty man. Im not even gonna lie man im 26 and i was a huge fan of X, regardless of “lyricism” or “real hip hop” whatever, his music emotionally touched me ina way i needed at the time and after he died and i heard Bad Vibes i fuckin cried. It was like i was listening to a message someone who died left for me, except someone actually just stiched together old random voicemails and clips of them talking to make it in order to trick me into giving them money and I know X wouldn’t have fucked with that AT ALL. I guess his mom was the ultimate deciding factor in all that, and she did it for money that will probably (hopefully) go to help raise his child and keep her sustained, so likely he wouldve wanted it to happen anyways. But, i know he wouldnt have fucked with that album or how it was created. It was fucking weird. Also, i hella doubt any of his family was hurting for money before BVF anyways

@@TheDamnWinner I definitely feel where you're coming from man. I'm 27 and a big fan of X and Juice Wrld, even though it was much earlier than when they passed I'm sure something similar would've happened with Steez. There's an old video of him saying King Capital was done and I'm sure there would have been hoops to jump through or beats/samples to clear I still would've liked to have heard it. Even if someone leaked it, I feel like the world needs to hear that.

Thanks for this video, can't believe it's been like a whole decade since his death. I remember when 1999 dropped and pro era got big. I was listening to them in college but I didn't know much about Steez or pro era in depth. That whole era when Pro Era was becoming well known was such a special time along with Odd future and so many unique rappers being found through blogs.

Heard steez for the first time literally that December he left us, it was wild. I was in science class sophomore year when my boy that knew I listened to pro Era asked me if I heard about it, had to be 12/24/12. That was the first time I became a fan of somebody who died. To this day it still gets me. Especially the deeper you go into him, his lyrics,a d his lifestyle. He was thinkin the way a lot of us do now, but at 19. Poor guy. I always wonder, what did he see that was so unbearable that he couldn't be here? As long as the people that clicked on this video keep playin his music, he'll never die, always cherished, RIP Steelo

Survival Tactics was one of the first rap tracks that got me into the genre. From the first time I heard Steez, I just got rap as an art form like I never had before. The flow, the emotional intensity, the layers of meaning in his lyrics. Whenever I get to a dark place I always think about Steez, because it makes me realise how much potential is lost by not choosing life. I think he would have changed the world for the better even more than he already has. It breaks my heart to think about all the incredible things he would have done, but I'm so grateful for his life and the art he left behind. Rest easy King Steelo.

The world preys on the gifted and most young kings get their head chopped. i still cling to the belief steez had something about him i and most could not begin to comprehend. i have came to the conclusion the true path to enlightenment for me doesn’t involve psychedelics and esoteric means. Despite dropping most of those beliefs beyond modern science i still have confidence in believing steez was in tune with something more divine than a vast majority of others . Whatever that may be is beyond me but is something i respect on a profound level

I was there for this whole movement… Steez was incredible, really took “entendre rap” to the next level. Not in terms of impact but in terms of skill, much like jay z and Wayne did. It was inspiring to me at the time, don’t think I would have thought to begin making music without it because of how inspiring and intricate his rhyme scheme was. Check out spitter splitters freestyle, he was just a kid. “I lie, I cheat and I steal, I know”
