I don't consider myself "left wing" because I still hold some socially conservative views, but progressive economic policy has a proven track record of stable long-term economic growth and mitigated chances of large crashes. Right wing and neo liberal economic policy (unchecked and unfettered capitalism withOUT protections in place to protect volatile market fluctuations, workers rights, environment, and worker exploitation) always leads to massive boom and massive bust cycles after which more and more wealth travels to the top, shrinking the middle class. Trickle down economics is has never worked and has lead to major crashes after Reagan, Bush, and will happen under or after Trump.

I would like to enter this conversation. In 1978 I designed my first computer out of available chips. My regular job was as a Telecom/Field Engineer for a large electric utility, not to design a new computer system. My original company was bought out by a larger company. Each company had taken it's own tact for setting up their SCADA and monitoring systems. When they "joined" up, they had the problem of having two different systems to integrate. The second, and more problematic issue, was that these two companies were in direct competition and therefore had no incintive to create a solution. The problem boiled down to converting communication protocols between the two companies. For instance the SCADA Master would issue an information request from one of the numerous sites in the system. This request was captured by my design, reformatted to the other company's communication format, and sent to the site. It would then respond, at which time my design would capture the response, reformat it, and send it to the master. This all had to happen in Real-Time. In other words, with little or no delay. There is a purpose to this story and it's just about to come up. The utility let me stay home and design the system. I was their only hope. No one else in the company of 25000 could do it. If I couldn't do it, the utility would have to choose one of the two competing systems, and replace a lot of equipment, costing millions. I was paid overtime, when applicable. There were 4 other techs im my shop that were unhappy with the fact that I was getting paid overtime to work at home. This caused my boss to question me fairly often when I was going to be "done". And here's the point of this rather long story. I could only respond with "No one has ever designed a system like this. If you could buy it off the shelf you would. Therefore I can't tell you when I'll be done, since I've never done this before". This is the essence of the AI problem. The only thing a computer can do is what it has been previously programmed to do. It's only claim to fame is that it can do what it does, very fast. It doesn't "think". It's presented with a problem, and if previously programmed to deal with it, will do so, very fast. If it is not programmed to handle the problem, it will be confused ... very fast. When writing software, the larger portion is spent writing for every possibility, even things that aren't supposed to happen. This is what marks a stable piece of software. If the software isn't stable, it's useless. So if the computer is presented with a combination of inputs not programmed for, it will "mumble off to mama", very fast! Therefore the ultimate problem in programming is accounting for EVERY POSSIBILITY ... good luck with that. How would a computer solve a previously unknown problem. How would it know if a posibility was legitimate? The PROGRAMMER would have to tell it so, BEFOREHAND. By the way, my solution worked perfectly in the end, and still is ... 10 years later. I got paid $400 for my efforts (and quite a bit of overtime). But I also got the satisfaction of creating something unique, that solved an existing problem. It don't get no better than that, for a dedicated softhead/hardhead. Down with compilers ... assembly language forever! Harry Kenneth Richardson II

Capitalism once worked well. When the product you bought was more or less locally produced and when multiple parties were offering the same type of product. Nowadays a lot of what we consume is not visible to the customer anymore. What kind of feed does a farmer gives his cattle? What happens to our data on the internet. I agree that communism does not work. But i am looking at our government to keep the big companies honest. To bad that these companies turn out to be the biggest donors to the politicians that are supposed to keep them honest and us safe.

Machines create jobs.... oh yeah? I personally witnessed 250 employees lose thier jobs on an assembly line to just 10 robotic machines! The plant scaled back production and stockpiled parts for the span of a week while the machines where installed. When they became operational half where "let go" while the other half where used to compensate any down time for tooling adjustments for quality control. As The robotic arms speed and conveir belts speed was increased.. the amount if employees on the line decressed. To just -3- employees. Two line runners and a robotic repair technician. I know they take jobs because I was the repair technician for 5 years. I knew my job costed all of them theirs. I hated coming to work more and more. Machines dont tell you about the weekends they had they dont tell you dirty jokes or their plans for their future you would hear them talk about until it was time to clock out. I got to hear a buzz and diffrent color blinking light to alert me about what malfunction it detected or task completed and ready for Retooling for another directive. These two doucehbags should spend one night in a real factory before they open their ignorant mouths.

The growth of knowledge is boundless. Creativity is the foundation of wealth because it leads to explanations that discover new knowledge. Mind is born one lifetime at a time and then returned, the only thing that transcends us is knowledge. Language is our collective extended memory. There is some serendipity in creation, it can only surprise us in a flow of making and searching. The mistake is the idea that we will end scarcity, which could only end when we as physical beings stop developing into new modes of creativity and go into stasis. Our future understanding and goals in the world will be very different when we are ourselves different. The growth of knowledge is boundless because our knowledge of the natural world continues to grow and of the world we ourselves continue to create.

Socialism means many different things to different people. Democratic Socialism here in New Zealand from 1935 till 1975 was terrific for all but the bankers and landlords. It was a mix of state planning and ownership with still plenty of room for private initiative. The NZ govt built great infrastructure, free hospitals, free schools and universities as well as the best houses for workers found anywhere in the world. People did not become lazy, unemployment was near zero for all those decades despite generous welfare for those unable or too old too work. Businesses were profitable tho they faced many restrictions including high import tariffs and quotas. Wages were high and workers had money to spend so only the very rich were unhappy because they had to pay people well if they wanted them to clean their toilet for them. Check out Scandinavia today. Don't take the Wall St journal as a serious source tho, their banker buddies hate the fine example of democratic socialism with great services, lots of innovation in a dynamic economy that shares prosperity with all citizens. If capitalism is so great how come the US has crumbling infrastructure, falling life expectancy and disfunctional politics.

Gotta disagree on one thing. Machine learning A.I. _constantly_ surprises us. We use the concept of natural selection in simulations to find the best possible way of doing something, and we are almost always surprised at what it finds. Take chess, for example, what humans might have thought was the best move is indeed not, the A.I. will surprise us and make a different move that 50 moves later ends up being better. A.I. will never become like Skynet though, no matter how intelligent they are, they still play chess only when we want them to, they lack _drive._ They will always depend on humans for direction.

I'd argue that if a man-made machine cannot tame/exceed the man himself, then wouldn't it be true that man cannot tame/exceed nature? If a human brain can seem to control and tame nature (of course it doesn't in the sense that nature goes on no matter what), it seems possible to suggest that a machine could one day tame humanity. The displacement from farming (and mostly self-reliance) to urban manufacturing (relying on others) was huge; it seems reasonable to see that AI will also displace ever more sophisticated people's work (both manufacturing which is obvious already being taken over by "smarter machines," coupled with services that will be automated next -- think many doctors, lawyers, low end software developers, drivers, stock traders, etc.)

Capitalism is a word, the word was thus "coined" -- it was not coined by capital-profit-seekers.....it was coined by PJ Proudhon (father of anarchism and mutualism -- it was anarchists who came up with free-market theory). When Proudhon coined "capitalistic" and defined the country who best represented it, he said America from 1790 to 1850-ish was the best example of it. Capitalism at that time had certain features and he outlined those features. 1) There was no free-markets (at that time), 2a) Profits were primarily directly or indirectly Slave Based 2) Only wealthy WASP white men could vote, 3) Women and People of Color could not consume the same basket of goods and "own" them in the same way as WASP Men could, 4) Women could be sold-off to men as marital-chattel, 5) Women could be forced to suffer and were forbid to seek pain-remedies from pains origin, 6) Women had no control over marriage or children thereafter, 7) 1st Peoples were forced on reservations, 8) 1st Peoples had no religious freedoms and no educational control over their children, 9) Poor people were forced by Gov't to participate in Fugitive Slave Capture. AS SOON as you change the basis of an economy you must change the name of that economy, you can't call it capitalism if it harbors aspects of socialism. Milton Friedman said over-and-over in the 70's, 80's, and 90's that America was a Mixed-Economy 50% Capitalist 50% Socialist (also known as Corporatism and specifically Liberal-Corporatism -- created by Mussolini, though we call his "Fascistic-Corporatism). Privatization is NOT free-market theory -- it is SPECIFICALLY Mussolini's Corporatist thinking, again and very specifically the use of the word "privatization" If we don't get our word origins right as parties divide you can't be sure how they view and are arguing the word. Free-market Theory is older than anarchism, it goes back to laissez faire which comes out of the desire of Mercantilist thinking, wanting Monarchy out of producer-consumer relations -- it goes back to the 1700's.

The American capitalist system is not an ideology, instead it is the best economy system that makes the best for everyone. But because people insists calling it capitalism, so I call it "American capitalism" to distinguish it from the global criminal "Marxist capitalism" which is "made in China” and infecting the whole world right now, so be aware please. People must learn more to understand "American capitalism", but the result can tell a lot. It produces big middle class, small very rich class, and small very poor class (the economy classes). And the average gap between rich and poor is also not too much. The American people just want a good job, some opportunity to get rich, and social equality, which they can not get them from socialism, but they can get them from "American capitalism". That is why they love "American capitalism" and hate socialism (and so do I). There is no such thing as democratic socialism because true democracy is anti-ideology and vice versa. But there are two styles of socialism, national socialism and global (Marxist) socialism. National socialism is specific to a nation, good or bad, it does not harm other nations, so I have no problem with it. The evil is Marxist socialism (or communism) which killed more than 100 millions people already. Marxist socialism is a big lie because it never works. it imposes economy equality, which is naturally suitable for insects, not for humans. While social equality is good because it gives people the equal means to work and to compete, economy equality is bad because it only makes people equally poor and lazy in a society that is unequal and unfair. It takes a book to explain all the evil of Marxist socialism, in this short comment, I can only summarize it like this: Socialism is an illusion, a night-mare, a doctrine that is anti-human nature, a crime against humanity, a hell on earth, a big lie, the most stupid, crazy, heinous ideology that turns human back to animal. The communists and liberal socialists are the most unscrupulous, ruthless, self-center, delusional, cruel, thuggish, deceptive, cunning con artist criminals who are very arrogant, pretentious, crazy, full of hatred, and so on. I can prove everything I said and if you do not understand what “Marxist capitalism” is, read Karl Marx’s "Das Kapital" to understand it or go to communist China or Vietnam see it for yourself.

As usual, little to no perspective in the comments. Look, almost any system can be made to work if everyone involve wants it to. The benefit that capitalism has is that is pragmatic, where socialism and communism are idealistic. It's not that socialism couldn't work. But capitalism recognizes that humans are essentially only idealistic after their own needs and wants are met, and a lot of them are just outright greedy. So, you create a system that doesn't attempt to pretend that's not true, but instead it does what it can to direct that tendency towards the greater good. The problem of course is that it also allows those most greedy (and power is money, so greed applies to power as well) to get into a position to start making the playing field unfair. Capitalism only works optimally if the playing field is fair. If anyone can have a great idea and get rich, that encourages people to have good ideas. When the folks who already have gotten rich start to arrange things to keep those benefits to themselves, it starts to fall apart. If that goes far enough, you will get rebellion and then you will end up socialism or communism. People will turn on the system if it is only serving a privileged few. I mean the socialist/communist tendencies in this country in the early parts of the 1900s didn't come form nowhere. The communist revolution in Russia didn't come from nowhere. When capitalism fails, you'll likely get the other extreme (and probably a lot of heads cut off and all that.)
@CharmedQuarkSystems5 жыл бұрын
@vertex2100 Well, that's a pretty much perspective-free comment. The bulk of Marxists or Communists on the planet (like the bulk of most everythings on the planet) are what they are because they were born into it. If they'd have been born somewhere else, they'd likely be something else. If you'd have been born somewhere else, you might have been a Marxist or Communist, and may or may not have questioned that viewpoint, and any failings you would have had on the competition front wouldn't necessarily be a failure of character or intelligence but just one of social inheritance. And their lackings may not be that much more damaging to us all in the end than yours. Lack of perspective and blind bigotry has probably killed as many of us humans over the centuries than our chosen political systems.

Lots of mistakes here. Don’t hate on corporations/technologists, they are harmless until they “partner” with gov. So focus on liberty, which means less gov. Also, the limitations proved by Godel and Turing don’t just apply to computers, but to every system including humans. Lastly, computers can be extremely creative, just look at AlphaGo which beat the highest human Go master. There will come a time when machines will be smarter and more creative that humans, but that comes gradually and by then most humans will have chosen to be increasingly “bionic”, so the difference between humans and machines will blur as we go. Glider says we can’t predict the future but goes on to make such wild predictions about things that will “never” happen. Shows you can be both smart and wrong.

To all the Democrat adults living in your parents' basement, I propose this question: what happens for you if God forbid your parents are both killed, like in an accident? What are you going to do? Do you KNOW?

I would agree wealth measure knowledge. If you count the use of said knowledge to buy the government power and control to game the system to gain more wealth. You have more knowledge to know it's easier to use power to manipulate the system instead of being creative. Take patents and just insert company against citizen b.

What about those that can’t for what ever reason? In a world where we have everything those that have deserve more because one is more intelligent. Is it just about exploitation of people, animals, land and sea until there’s nothing left. As long as those $ are piling up for those that exceed the capacity of the rest of the population. So the majority distribution of wealth only goes to the 1% and everyone is okay with seeing those that have continue to have and those that don’t, continue to have not.

Super A.I will surpass human mind capabilities I’m not sure why you doubt that. Plenty of study’s and experiments where A.I machines have actually learned by themselves special abilities. Like one learned to recognize iris and face features on a human. Again it was not coded to do so but rather learned by it self. It’s in a documentary called “Do you trust this computer.” Also if you looked into quantum mechanics you will learn how much further technology will go. With how Subatomic particles can change orbit at anytime and how this can Translate to human particles being scanned and reconstructed elsewhere regardless of distance. In other words teleportation!!

Isn’t it ironic these companies like Google and FB are all for the socialist agenda, yet they’re both running their money through offshore bank accounts to avoid paying taxes. They could finance everyone in the country and even provide free health insurance yet they don’t even pay their fair share of taxes. I guess it’s okay if it’s not their money being given away, just yours and mine.

If the creative side of society points to socialism maybe you should look at it, maybe there's some knowledge there
@Absaalookemensch6 жыл бұрын
It's better to give than to receive, except to those that give (pay taxes) and those that receive (get tax payouts.) Capitalism is better for the productive, socialism is better for the non-productive. Increase socialism and you get more non- productivity. Increase capitalism and you get more productivity. Socialism breeds mediocrity. Capitalism breeds exceptionalism.

If you don't like socialism, tell your grandma to rip up her Social Security checks
@bane39916 жыл бұрын
Social Security is running out. Again, another failure from socialism. What about the fact that social security discourages people from saving because they think they'll be taken care of? You should have the freedom to do whatever you like with your own money, you think it's okay for the government to confiscate part of your check and give it to you when you're older like you're some sort of brainless child? You don't have the common sense to know how to spend your money and you want to voluntarily hand it over to the government?

Good, taking away low level jobs that nobody likes and reducing the amount we have to work is a GREAT thing for humanity. Being an ideological hack is wanting to preserve capitalism by slowing down Automation. You won't find a SINGLE socialist who is against Automation (unless they are a social democrat....in which case they're pro-mixed economy, not socialists)

It needent be one or the other, all or none...socialist style running of utilities and basic amenities is a must, but only if those who benefit, contribute...it should work like a loan where insurance is impracticle, in the labour market, protection of basic work practice saftey is preferable over profit alone,...basic health care prevents a huge amount of disease and neglect but...better systems must be encouraged and researched, the subsidizing of life saving drugs is absoluty preferable to rackets like the recent purchase and extortionate 5000% price hike of the drug used for treating toxoplasmosis by Martin Shkreli.
