Mr. Leamer, if you are looking for a subject for your next book, why not write a group biography about the men of that era: Jock Whitney (Betsy Cushing Roosevelt’s husband) , Averill Harriman (who had an affair with Ingrid Bergman? & married Pamela Digby Churchill), Bill Paley, Ben Bradlee, etc.

A great book! Leamer is a fabulous researcher/author/interviewee in my opinion. Who cares if he misstated the state (Kansas) where the Clutter murders took place? Focus on that and you’ll miss the exquisite enjoyment this fascinating book provides.

I believe Capote had a love/hate attitude towards these women. In Capote’s Women, Leamer writes, “As much as Truman was drawn to the beauty, taste, and manners in that world of privilege, he was repulsed by its arrogant sense of superiority and ignorance of life as most people lived it.” This repulsion of The Swans sense of superiority is why Capote portrayed these women as vapid and gossipy in Answered Prayers. I believe it was Capote’s way of reducing them to what they thought of as his level. It’s possible he harbored resentment towards them after having had to perform for them for decades, and decided to use them for his and the general public’s entertainment.

Rebecca_Yours is an intelligent and thoughtful analysis of Capote; his push/pull, nagging conflict as regards his mother, his class background, and yes his internalized Homophobia and self hatred as a gay man.

I couldn't possibly agree more Anthony. Leamer is a surprising study in unexpected sopistication: This sophistication enables him a near "X-Ray Vision" as he dissects issues of Class, Sexuality, Parent/Offspring Relations, and more. A truly surprising and talented man!

Well, I've read Capote's biography and other things about him and it's not crazy to think he loved this women because that's what his mother, who was the most complicated relationship in his life, aspired to be. Before Answered Prayers he writes about his pre fame life and what he knows about: the poor US south. But writing about his dream come true: New York gentry, he was very out of place and he blocked, so that inflammatory chapter, that caused a collective nightmare, might have been a desperate, and I'll attempt to just get started, using other's people secrets. I don't know if his intentions were bad, but the heart and compassion present in his work seems to be gone in the chapters we know about Answered Prayers. I think that brought his downfall.

I so enjoyed this interview , a very nice man 👍👍 I’m so glad he acknowledged how modern women work plus everything else they do which limits the glamour of yesteryear. I think these women had very emotionally empty lives but the desire for wealth seemed to sustain them somehow?? You can only wish them the best really.

Joanne Carson’s heirs even got $50,000 from the auction of the 25% of Truman’s ashes left among her things ! Truman would’ve had a laugh about that!
