CAPPADOCIA'S UNDERGROUND CITIES are marvels of ancient engineering and ingenuity, nestled in the heart of Turkey's central Anatolian region.
The purpose of these underground cities extended beyond mere refuge; they were also centers of communal life, with chapels, storage rooms for food and wine, and communal areas for cooking and gathering. Remarkably, these cities could sustain populations for extended periods, thanks to their sophisticated ventilation systems that provided fresh air even deep underground.
KAYMAKLI UNDERGROUND CITY is another remarkable example of ancient subterranean architecture located in Cappadocia, Turkey. It is one of the largest and most well-preserved underground cities in the region, offering insights into the daily life and strategic thinking of its inhabitants over centuries.
Dates back to the Hittite period around the 8th-7th centuries BC, although its main development occurred during the Byzantine era and later under the early Christians. The city descends approximately eight levels underground, although only four are currently open to visitors.
One of the distinctive features of Kaymakli is its ventilation system, which includes air shafts and chimneys that provided fresh air to the lower levels.
CAPPADOCIA also boasts a diverse agricultural sector that thrives despite the region's semi-arid climate. We notice the self sufficiency in term of local fruit produce. That is why it was not surprising to find organic product.
