Whats The Difference Between A Cappuccino and a Cortado? We paid a visit to Single Speed Coffee Roasters in Flagstaff, AZ and had Zach (Director of Coffee) make us a Cappuccino and a Cortado, and explain to us what the difference is.

That is not the original recipe for a cortado actually. Here in spain, where the cortado literally was invented its always made with a shot of espresso and just a tiny bit of milk something between 75%espresso/25%milk up to 90%espresso/10%milk For some reason outside Spain Portugal and a big part of south america they all think it is 50/50. Good video anyway 👍

If you love the espresso/coffee flavor do yourself a favor and get a cortado.

Either the Flagstaff-area have the definitions inverted, or Zach got the terms wrong. Cortado do usually have a bigger percentage of espresso than cappuccino, which practically means smaller cup with less steamed milk to same dose of espresso. It is the cappuccino that usually have art on top, while cortado have little to none.

If we are counting the foam component as another equal aspect of the milk component, then yes a cappuccino has less espresso by ratio. Otherwise we have to determine “how much ratio” we give to the foam component, which is tricky but not invalid.

Bistro Cortado = $5 / $11,000 a year for 6 a day. I know some who drink 12. Home made Cortado = $0.55 / $1,216 per year… for 6 a day. $3 a day. At that price you can hire a house barista 😂

What is the point of pulling the espresso into a glass first and then pouring it into the cappuccino cup?

Often, there's not enough clearance under the group head. Also, the glass is used to measure the shot. Chance to discard it if something went wrong.

Hey Maximillian - Great question, here is the way Zach explains it… Modern cappincinos typically have less foam and are often topped with latte art. They have less defined layers unlike traditional cappuccinos which have distinct layers of espresso, milk, and foam. Traditional cappincinos were also made by scooping out foam. Here I do a modern traditional, so more foam but not scooped out yet poured like modern cappuccinos. This still creates defined layers when done properly. Thanks for watching!

Hi Lorena! Great question, to keep it simple it breaks down to this. A latte is 1/3 espresso and 2/3 steamed milk. Where as a cortado is made of equal parts of espresso and steamed milk. Sounds like maybe an episode we need to do.

The main difference between cortado and cappuccino coffee is that cortado coffee is made with two espresso shots and milk, while cappuccino coffee is made with only one espresso shot, steamed milk, and foamed milk. saved you 13 minutes
