paulkirtley.co.uk Windermere is England's largest natural lake and the venue of the Expedition Canoeing Skills course that Ray Goodwin and I run there every summer. Part of the course programme involves learning and practising canoe capsize drills. Under close supervision, the students take it in turns to capsize their boats and perform rescues. More experienced students have the opportunity to perform solo and all-in rescues....

Good to see the technique of righting a canoe with the assistance of another but I was hoping to see how a single person manages when their canoe is flooded like after white water rapids. Do you show that technique somewhere else?

Good to see this being done. I'm long overdue another practice session myself. I imagine this was a rather sobering experience for some as to how difficult re-entering a canoe can be. Cheers, Al

Great video and what Ray said about people learning about how their own bodies react to sudden cold immersion is of massive importance. (and why the Royal Marines get to ski into a hole in a frozen lake) Cold shock will kill regardless of a person's fitness even in summer. Having that knowledge will help them to help others as much as it will help them in a capsize recovery. It's all the P's Prior Preparation Prevents Pi** Poor Performance. Atb Rob

Great to see the footage of me and Tine capsizing. It felt more 'extreme' than it looks on film though... :D

You guys were pretty slick with your rescues. It always looks less extreme on film :-(

Good prep to self rescue is having daily cold shower, once you get used to the cold it's half job done.

I love that old style boat (cutaway shot) at 3:00. Do you know its name, perchance? BTW, there's a resort on Lake Rosseau in the Muskoka region of southern Ontario that takes its name from Lake Windemere.

An excellent video, making an extremely important point about cold water shock. I'm always dumbstruck when someone on the boat tells me they can swim the half mile to shore if necessary! That's not even taking account of tide, currents, rips and rocks far less the real killer.

An important lesson to learn, a lot of people drown because of the shock and breathing convulsions caused by falling into cold water, knowing how to combat that is a good anecdote to survival, to control breathing while keeping the head above water one must consciously force themselves to breath naturally, a lesson I learned over 30 yrs ago in the Forces, nice one Paul and Ray, atb, Paul.

Any realistic videos out there, without using giant flotation bags in the canoe? Have never seen anyone actually canoe tripping with those.

No is the answer they cannot self rescue they all got help from other canoers, self rescue is doing it YOURSELF not getting help lol.
