Its hard to understand why you would discourage a capsule wardrobe. I disagree with your point about you have to be rich to create one. I have clothes that have lasted a long time that were bought at Gap, H&M and Target. I have other clothes that also lasted a long time from Everlane and TJ Max runway. The cost is not the point. We (I included) in the US have a big problem with consumption. I shop because I like fashion and enjoy the process of looking for the next piece I will love. However I realized several years ago that I have way too many clothes. I have been on a quest to downsize and make more intentional purchases. Watching capsule wardrobe and decluttering videos has helped a lot to think about my style and what I really wear. I applaud those utubers who have committed to minimalism and a capsule wardrobe. Yes, some of them have wardrobes that are out of reach for the majority of us, but, some of them are more reasonable or thrifters. You can learn something from all of them. If they help us reduce our consumption and reduce the trend to buy more or just to post fashion blogs, I encourage them to continue to do so.

The clever thing to do is to buy pre-owned quality/premium items. Not only it's eco-friendly, but you pay only a fraction of the retail price. Yes, it takes a little more time to find the right ones, but we have to compromise somewhere.

I have pretty much clothes and I refuse to get rid of them because I easily get bored so I prefer to stop buying new clothes and rather shop in my closet to find new outfits. In this way I save money and stop being slave to “consumerism”. You are right, capsule is (are) for rich people.

As a baby boomer growing up in the US , a " capsule wardrobe " was called " coordinates " - buying basic quality pieces & combining them in different ways , adding or subtracting for the seasons , daily wear , updating & replacing when needed ( such as a basic winter coat , white blouse , work shoes , dress shoes , etc. ) . Even special occasion pieces were often coordinates or at least flexible enough to change looks w/ shoes , jewelry , etc. - think Little Black Dress ! My mother was born in 1921 & she , her sisters & mother , were always beautifully dressed & photos show lots of coordinates . Someone just copied the idea of coordinates , called it capsule wardrobe to " modernize " it , capitalize on it . Quality over quantity ! ( Even men wore coordinates - remember those in our family buying suits w/ two pair of pants - one matched the coat , the other complimented it , coordinating sport coats , shirts & ties , etc. to extend their options. ) 👗 👠 👖🥼🧥 💟

I just made my capsule wardrobe from things I have. I'm doing project 333 which means I change out my items seasonally using what I have.

I totally agree with you. I think a good definition of a capsule wardrobe is a curated wardrobe.I tried the trend for myself on a smaller budget (getting the important pieces that one "should" have and trying to stick to them). I think with practical things like having a black dress pants that fit good (it's a neutral and useful for formal events especially in colder weather), a pair of black heels for the same reason etc in those cases where you use these items not as frequently it's a good idea. BUT if you really are a person who truly loves fashion, you will really get so bored if you don't have variety, especially if you love prints and colors. PLUS the trending "silhouette" is always changing or your tastes and lifestyle may have evolved. Usually fashionable people are also very creative people and I don't think that goes hand in hand with aesthetic stagnation. Personally I love thrifting because I prefer the more traditional feminine silhouettes that were the trend in the past. I am able to still find them at a fraction of the cost. Also, thrifting allows for more unique outfits. You're not relying on a prevailing retail trend to dictate what pieces you're buying. NOT EVERYONE IS A BLACK DRESS PERSON. I have dark hair already and it clashes with my tan and sunny disposition. We need to just know our own bodies, aesthetics (the pros and the cons), and work within our budgets. You can't buy good taste.

I'm a student with a low budget and I have a capsule wardrobe! It works fine for me, because I kept everything small and I built it over the course of 3 years, not immediately changed everything in a week. I have about 20 summer pieces, 20 winter pieces and 15 all year round pieces. In the winter I have orange and red colors and in de summer I have greens added in. I did have some struggles though: perfectionism. I felt like everything needed to be perfect. The perfect colors, the perfect fit, perfect quality... Which obviously comes with a price tag. I focused so much on clothing that I was pretty much always browsing for "the perfect...". Still am, actually... I'm still looking for 1 "perfect" summer dress and 1 "perfect" winter skirt. The truth is, no such thing exists. In the end we just need to be dressed. And I don't want to keep buying stuff, like you said in the video the point is to rewear what you have. I do have a very nice selection of clothes now. I love seeing my wardrobe, switching it out with the season, and I feel great in the clothes I have now. I do think it helped me find the styles I feel my best in, and I learned I don't need many clothes to be happy. But after all this curating and polishing I need to stop working on it and just wear and live!

When shopping for particular items that you may desire for your capsule wardrobe, it may be very hard to find them; wrong season, store out of stock, the fashion moved on, not on sale, etc. Also, seasons must be considered. In the Midwest we have all seasons and a linen shirt does not keep you warm in the winter time. No one will really want only summer clothing when it is cold. Thank you for your video. Trends come and go. Find your own style and don't be afraid to modify your style selections whenever necessary. We grow as we learn more, our size also changes! Capsule wardrobe means more frequent laundering and cleaning and equals more wear and tear and items eventually need replacing. Simple solution? Stay indoors and don't go anywhere! No wardrobe ever is in a permanent fixed state. Closets are modified as the old clothing items go and the new comes in.

Capsule isn’t a single style! Classics isn’t the same thing at all, plenty of classicists have huge wardrobes.

Please, don't get me wrong, I LOVE your video, but I have to respectfully disagree. All the points against a cw you mentioned are, at least in my opinion, good points for one. I will try to explain: The concept of a cw is mix&match, not get rid of everything you own and buy new. It's quite the opposite; start with what you have. Why getting rid of your favorite light blue linen blouse just because someone else doesn't mention it in their list? It is YOUR capsule and should reflect your style, no matter if you are a rock-chick-digital-native, costal-boho-stay-at-home-mum, boss-lady-senior-ceo etc. I fully agree with you on: If it works for you, you shouldn't get rid of it just because. But that is not what a cw is. And the often by cw entusiasts on the internet promoted idea of timeless over trend helps a lot with that. And purging your closet from items that don't FIT anymore helps seeing the items that do fit 😉. Another point I want to adress is the boredom. Please, don't fill your closet with beige-only basics! As a rule of thumb (not a law) keep the 80-20 idea in the back of your mind. 80% of good quality basics in neutral colors that flatter your complexion (black, brown, navy, olive, grey, beige, white...) and 20% fun interest pieces that complete your style in bold colors, prints, trendy cuts... You will never wear that paisley-boho-kimono-situation, if you don't have a plain tank that goes underneath. Jep, shopping for those basics is not the fun part, but those items are the ones that make your more extra pieces shine! I fully agree on giving it a good thought, but by it I mean purchasing a new clothing item. If i have no bottoms that go with a top I see and like, where is the point in buying the top? A last point for me is the "better quality equals higher price". This might be true in some cases, in other it's not! Learning about fabrics, stitches, seams ... has really helped me to learn what quality means and what to look out for in clothing. You can spend a good fortune on poorly constructed polyester dresses as well as scoring cashmere winter coats for next to nothing. A good example is the often mentioned white t-shirt. You don't have to spend 50+ to find one that doesn't loose shape after a few washes, but if you spend only 3, you will most likely have to constantly rebuy and end up spending more. Meeting in the middle, buying high quality for a reasonable price has been my philosophy, and it served me well so far. I have had a cw since before I even knew the term, and it saved me a shit ton of money by now. Working as a legal secretary I have to look presentable, and I am also on a thight budget and have all the 4 seasons. I managed to get away with 2 blazers for the last 10+ years now! 😅 I also see that cws might be not for everyone, and I personally think a lot of cw advice (so called rules) are complete bs. But the basic principle of mix&match, your style and timeless basics over chasing every item just because of fomo, trends, impulse is a good mindset for saving money, sanity and a little bit of the planet. That being said: I never managed to apply those ideas when it comes to handbags. They are just so pretty! 👜🤷🏻♀️

I have a non traditional capsule. I don’t stick to a certain number of items, colors or patterns. I wear what I love, which is usually skirts with sweaters and dresses and repeat those outfits often bc I genuinely love them so much. I slowly built my wardrobe over 2 years, and have had some buyers remorse here and there. I typically wear designer but I don’t have to wash clothes as often as you’d think. I do think that capsule wardrobe content can sometimes strip the joy out of fashion and self expression because most of the creators making videos on the subject pretty much dress the same way. Capsule wardrobes are “meant”to reflect your life but also your personal style. I’m a stay at home mom but I never ever wear jeans and tshirts which is standard capsule uniform. So even if I’m running to target, cleaning my home or on the playground with my kids I’m usually in a dress and heels or loafers.

My season is Autumn. So, all of my clothes, shoes, handbags, coats and accessories (including jewelry and silk scarves) match together. They are all organized in my closet by events and choosing attires is effortless! ❤

I don't throw anything out until they have holes. Then I replace only the capsule items in my colour palette. Over the years, I did build a capsule wardrobe without throwing things out in one go. I also still have a category for special events where the most glamorous dresses will stay.

I find a capsule wardrobe works well for me in the winter, as I mostly end up wearing black/grey anyway and staying warm is my top priority. However in the warmer months, I like wearing lots of bright, colourful dresses and funky button down shirts. Minimalist for the winter, maximalist for the summer!

Mine is all thrifted, including Burberry trench, shoes and it bags. Not at all expensive, plus it lasts. Even the rich declutter. And ppl are obsessed with improving the planet, and capsule is part of that.

In a previous video on Ralph Lauren "old money" look, you recommended navy, black, white, beige and earth tones, high quality fabrics and classic cuts. I would like to see you put together a capsule wardrobe within those parameters... no tank tops, short-shorts or mini skirts, logos, jean skirts, ripped knees, ragged hems, even tho Lauren does some of these. A few pairs of leather shoes and sandals, sneakers or walking shoes. Your accurate observation as unsustainable and wasteful of stripping out a current wardrobe and buying new pieces to replace them is true. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. God bless you.

A capsule wardrobe can be done without buying expensive pieces, it just looks like you have to drop a load of money because nearly all the influencers show very expensive pieces. But in my opinion, most of their wardrobes are completely boring and cookie-cutter. If I saw one of these influencers out and about, their appearance would not tell me anything about their personalities, nor would it spark interest in any way. The only thing it would tell me is that they are still in a conformist stage of life. I recently watched a video with. I think it's called the minimalist mom and her sister on capsule wardrobes. I believe it was the sister that posted the video and I don't know her name, but anyway, it was an excellent video, and both these women are stay at home mom's And I believe they live in a more rural part of the country so there's no need to dress in luxury items to try and impress people. So the minimalist mom basically where is jeans and although she does like color, she always defaults to a black top so she has a few black tops and some jeans and that's her basic every day wardrobe . The sister also a stay at home. Mom wears track pants and some kind of colored or printed top as she really likes color. I think she has five tops per season as she does the 333 capsule. These are more down to earth in real life and more accessible for far more women than what influencers will Put forth. The minimalist mom and her sister spent very little on the ward, wardrobes, weeding out, but they don't wear or help them find what they do like and what they actually want to wear and wound up, saving them both a lot of money because they don't feel the need to continually buy things to make them happy.
