Captain America and the Avengers (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Mindscape's 1993 license-based beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Captain America and the Avengers.
Played through on the normal difficulty level with Captain America.
Data East's 1991 arcade beat 'em up staring Captain America is widely considered a classic. It was a good beat 'em up (it was no Final Fight, but it was pretty good) with some extremely impressive graphics and sound. The home ports varied quite a bit in quality between versions, with the Sega Genesis version easily sitting on top of the pile. Of course, Data East themselves co-produced it with Opera House, and it is a fair, somewhat scaled back representation to the original. The Game Gear version was impressively good, and the Game Boy version was surprisingly reasonable. So how about the SNES title?
Well, it certainly looks the nicest out of the major console ports. It's all super colorful and cartoony (though it's a bit too dark). The characters all are detailed for how small the sprites are, and the backgrounds look good, though they are missing a ton of details from the original coin-op. The cinema scenes between levels look pretty sweet, too.
The sound is pretty poor - the music is based on the original tracks, but the instruments make it sound pretty weak and tinny. The voices, the few samples that were actually included on the SNES, are clear but super compressed and artificial sounding, and the sound effects pack no power whatsoever. Half of them sound like the white noise "punch" sound that was so popular on the NES.
And then we get to the game play. The controls are the same as the Genesis and arcade port, sure, but they are super-sluggish and not terribly precise. It's pretty annoying trying to line up long-range shots, your character is a bit too slow to turn around, and it all feels too loose and choppy. The enemies also have an annoying period of invincibility after being hit, which draws out the battles too much. And since they can still hit you half the time when you're still blinking, it can be easy to get caught in a juggle that wipes out half of your life. These issues together make this what is probably the hardest home version of the game. It doesn't feel good, or natural, or fair most of the time. Unless you get cheap on the AI, you will get destroyed left and right.
I love the arcade and Genesis games, but the SNES version is a real stinker. I remember having really high hopes for it back when, and it couldn't have disappointed me more than it did when I rented it. If you want to play a home version of this, the Sega Genesis version is where it's at. Remember how the SNES version of Pit Fighter compared to the Genesis one? The disparity is about the same here.

Yes yes YES!!!! A thousand times yes. I got my SNES and Super Metroid, Mega Man X, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and this game because I loved the arcade game. I couldn't understand why I wasn't enjoying the SNES game. :|

I loved the arcade version of this game, but the SNES version made the game unfairly more difficult than it should have been, even with the exploit that allowed you to stay in the air and shoot down endlessly as Iron Man or Vision.

This game used to be a family activity on summer weekends in our home. The matter of who gets to be Iron Man was settled in a three-way brawl between my brother, my cousin and me, usually ending with my brother beating our asses, and dad casually picking Cap while we were fighting. Good times

Well, belt scroller beat-em-ups in this era never had save points or passwords, but having NO continues flies in the face of Beat-Em-Ups 101. The enemy invulnerability phase being longer than the players' is inexcusable.

I remember borrowing this game from a neighbor, back when I was in elementary school.. I mean, after playing the SNES version of Turtles in Time, I was expecting nothing less than a blast with this version! Sadly, this was my first true letdown experience with the SNES... Of all the problems with this shoddy port, my biggest problem is the lack of balance between the players and the enemies. Why does almost every single hit send your Avenger falling to the ground, screaming "NO!" in the process, while the enemies have over TWO SECONDS of invincibility frames?! The Genesis version was pretty bad too, but it was LEAGUES beyond the SNES version. For one thing, it was developed in-house by Data East, who made the original arcade game. Meanwhile, they outsourced the SNES version to Mindscape.

I didn't know about the existence of even the genesis version even though I had the infamous PS2 super collection that came with super nintendo and mega drive games. Even knowing the bad quality of this version (arcade and genesis made it better) I still remember every afternoon I played it with my dad and remembering those songs and sound effects.

Probably the license, or in the case of the Spiderman game, not a chance as it was a Sega made game, and with Sega in the console business at that point, no way they'd let their biggest competitor (besides Nintendo) have one of their games on Sony's platform.

Yup, this is one of those games I really regret getting for the snes back in the day. glad I already had the genesis version before I found out about this version. if the game mags at the time had been honest about this version I never would have wasted money on it and just stuck with the genesis.

Liked the game though I have to agree that the Genesis version is superior. Never understood why this port was worse. Going off on a tangent here, but with Blade Runner 2049 out now have you considered playing the Blade Runner PC game at some point? I understand if you don't have it but it was just a thought.

I was surprised this game was never re-released for the Switch at the Nintendo Eshop since the Switch gets a lot of old retro games from Data East but it has to be due to License Issues

@Kel Belmont While it's Juggernaut in the arcade version, they clearly redesigned him in this one to be unrecognisable a year later, as maybe they felt they should save him for X-Men games instead. This version is clearly a generic robot (the single red eye, the 'directive' dialogue). There must be a reason maybe a directive from Marvel? It's just so odd.

Marvel Hereoes were..less than Super on Nintendo. The only legitimately good Marvel game the SNES had was X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse and maybe Maximum Carnage. At least Batman & Konami saved the day for Nintendo on the DC front.
