Its the shape of the shield plus the weight of it. A shield likr that has to be pretty hefty. Look at when he breaks the 5 6 slabs in slow mo. He almost tips over trying to stop the shield. So basic physics. The more mass you have the more force you put out. Acceleration changes, gravity applies different etc.
