I really appreciate that you didn't get snarky and insult Cap's big "American Dream" speech. It would have been so easy, but some of us like things a little simple and cut and dried, even if RL doesn't allow us to be so strident in our own lives. I don't need a Captain America that clutches his pearls and self-debates, and I love those monologues. Thanks for not going the "I'm so smart I'm going to crap on this writer's story" route. Nerdy nickpick: the Widow's Bite was not a conventional bullet, it was some some sort of electrical discharge thingie, and as such was non-lethal -- remember that it used to be a given that heroes used non-lethal weaponry. About this comic, it seems to have mostly been a means to an end (as many of Gruenwald's stories were), to try to dismantle the criticisms (and there were some, not necessarily in good faith) that Cap was a drug user / steroid junkie and thus a bad role model. To the best of my knowledge, the official story at the time was that the serum / vita-ray combo pushed Steve to the peak of human capability, but in terms of lasting effects, the only thing the serum granted him was increased stamina. TThis meant that you could take the serum away from Steve and he could still Captain America about as effectively. Also, full credit to Gruenwald for having a pretty good voice for all the characters in this story, especially the Kingpin and the Red Skull -- and I love the Kingpin's flimsy rationalization for why it's a good thing that he sells drugs.

Cap’s “You want a kick?” comment made me think of the Cole Porter Song “I get a kick out of you” It does seem it was slang for a high or buzz. “I get no kick from champagne, Mere alcohol, Doesn't thrill me at all, So tell me, why should it be true, That I get a kick out of you. Some get a kick from cocaine, I'm sure that if, I took even one sniff, It would bore me terrifically, too, Yet I get a kick out of you. I get a kick every time I see you, Standing there before me, I get a kick though it's clear to see, You obviously don't adore me. Some get a kick in a plane, Flying too high, With some gal in the sky, Is my idea of nothing to do, But I get a kick out of you. I get a kick...out of you.” Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Cole Porter

Fantastic synopsis and review of one of the weirder stories in cap's history. I always thought the comparison of the serum to drugs was weird, as it was administered to him by a doctor rather than something he did recreationally. In addition to coming around the time of stuff like D.A.R.E, this also was relatively soon after the crack epidemic started, and ICE shared many of the attributes that crack did of being extra potent and addictive. Also, about two years earlier was the largest drug bust in the US (at the time) where something like 21 tons of drugs were seized.
@TheJohno952 жыл бұрын
My favorite part of the whole arc is when Cap beats the hell out of Daredevil and just leaves him laying on a playground. Crossbones shows up, takes off DD's mask, and thinks to himself: "I would never know this guy again if I saw him on the street." DD just doesn't get any respect! Crossbones has a point, though. Taking off a heroes mask doesn't guarantee their identity is blown. I mean, most of the time they're just going to be someone you would bump into on the street.

Seven issues AND 1-3 issues of Daredevil. They were weird ones. Daredevil in his crossover issue actually followed Cap BACK to NYC after they both did an adventure that was even more preachy adventure about a water powered car inventor getting whacked by an oil company* somewhere vaguely Upstate ANd I don;t even think we're talking Westchester upstate but like, Finger Lakes upstate. I don't remember WHY Cap went upstate in the middle of his Meth binge but he did. *and Cap going on a Meth-fueled rant about it being wrong to invade Panama without UN permission because their president was dealing coke(And stopped taking orders from the CIA but that's another issue entirely). I don;t think they quite explained to Ann Nocenti what they meant when they said Cap was "Angry about drugs" so for an issue she had him taking almost the opposite position on the Drug war that he was taking in his own book before and after the crossover.

If steroids didn't have all the negative side-effects that they have, and you only had to take them once to turn you into the best physical version of yourself - kind of like the fantasy super-serum - then what would be so fundamentally "wrong" with taking them? I mean, yeah. If you're gonna compete in sports, you should only be able to compete in a league with others who've taken the super-serum, but they're not really having the unfair advantage debate there. The point of the comic seems to be that all drugs are inherently "bad" simply by virtue of being a drug. That is such a simple-minded way of looking at it.
