My favorite scene is when Steve is asked if he wants to kill, to which he replies "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from". To me, it perfectly sums up Steve's character.

It's not "IA", it's "1A", which was a designation of the Selective Service Classification code, as was the "4F" that was stamped on his first card. 1A meant you were available for military service without any restrictions, and 4F meant you were not acceptable for service by doctor's evaluation. There have been a host of other codes for deferment or restriction for a variety of reasons.

They used a small, skinny body double for the small Steve Rogers. They used CG to put actor Chris Evans’ face on the small body. When Steve crashed thru the window, it’s because he wasn’t used to his new, bigger body lol. Schmidt is also known as “Red Skull” in the comics.

In case you missed it, the blue stuff that Dr Erskine injected into Steve was the same stuff General Ross injected into Blonsky in the Incredible Hulk. That was the original Super Solidier Serum. Blonsky's side effects were because the secret of the vita rays died with Dr Erskine, so without the vita rays to stabilize the transformation, Blonsky kept mutating. Technically Blonsky started off as a super soldier, before he abominated. General Ross hired Banner to recreate the vita rays. Ross was trying recreate Captain America, but he witheld information from Bruce, so Ross got the Hulk instead. So I guess the vita rays weren't gamma based. General Ross trying to recreate Captain America, Howard Stark working alongside Captain America, and the Red Skull stealing the "Jewel of Odin's trasure rooom" at the very beginning. You're absolutely right about Marvel being all interconnected.

Agreed. The first time I read the actual history of the Nazi party and Hitler himself, it stunned me. American here, BTW. It was a lot more... subtlety than I expected. At least when his movement first gained traction. Its easy to blame a nation for the actions of their leaders, and to judge each individual citizen the same as you would judge them. As an American, I get that more and more with every election 😅

"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place" is from the Greek myth of the Hydra, a serpentine creature with nine heads that terrorized the land. It was one of Heracles' 12 Labors to slay the beast, which he did by cauterizing the stumps of the heads he cut off so that they couldn't grow back. The Red Skull is one of the most iconic comic villains, he's been around since comics began with the Captain America creation. And it's unsurprising that you think his troopers look like Stormtroopers, the Empire in Star Wars was meant to be a futuristic reflection of the Nazis. Cap's shield is a very effective weapon, just like the Spartans and their shields in ancient Greece, who used them as effective bashing and punching weapons. It's also made of vibranium, a fictional metal which is vibration cancelling, which is how his shield is able to ricochet without losing momentum, and he's very practiced with the angles so he knows how to get it to ricochet back to him :P

This movie has a special place in my heart, purely because I absolutely LOVE Captain America as a superhero. His ideals and morals and even flaws are something to admire about him, and makes you want to become something like him in the future. A true superhero.

Evans really deserves so much credit for his portrayal of the character. it would have been SO easy for captain america to seem like a doofus or a goody-goody. but the way they show him as a soldier.. and more importantly, a *good* person, who's also very capable and decisive. it's hard to get that right. henry cavil is another example of this. he made superman seem like less of a "boyscout" they both were able to give these characters real heart.. and ground them and make them relatable even though they're both these mythical characters. (the writers of course deserve credit for this too, of course!) ***i'm also looking forward to your Winter Soldier reaction, because it might be my favorite of ALL the marvel movies!

The character of Captain America was created around 1940, so it makes sense to have a WWII setting. The scene where Captain America punches “Adolph” is a nod to a comic book cover from March of 1941. In the comics, Bucky was more of a kid than a soldier

As I'm sure you know by now, Howard Stark is Tony's father. He was played by an older actor in Iron Man 2 in the old footage from the 1970s. This is/was a much younger Howard from the 1940s.

Earlier liveries on more modern planes like the MD-80 were largely bare-metal as well (one of the longest-lasting was the classic American Airlines livery from 1968-2013, which is one of my favorites).

Joe Johnston also directed The Rocketeer (1991); which is sort of the prototype for this movie. The Rocketeer wasn't a big hit at the time, but it has a lot of the same elements that make Captain America enjoyable. Maybe It was ahead of it's time, or maybe Indiana Jones had already been there, done that.

Just so you know, Howard Stark didn't find Steve. Steve was found by SHIELD agents in the modern era. As it noted in the beginning of the movie, a Russian oil exploration team found the wreck and notified the US. SHIELD got wind of it, put two and two together (the location matching where Steve's plane went down), and sent up a team. They recovered his body and his shield.

Captain America doesn’t necessarily have “super powers”. The Super Soldier Serum made Captain America a physically “perfect” human. Captain America is the limit of human evolution. He can bench press about 1200 lbs. He can run about 50 mph. He cannot get drunk or poisoned because of his metabolism. Fast reflexes. Fast healing. Slowed aging. Very flexible and acrobatic. From a standstill, he can leap 20 feet straight into the air. In other words, if he competed in the Olympics, Steve Rogers would win gold medals in EVERY event.

CCC Comic Facts: Captain America is 82 years old this year! He first showed up in Captain America Comics #1 published in 1941 by Timely Comics, the precursor to Marvel. His first cover has him punching out Adolf Hitler while wielding the more triangular shield. The USO shows and costume are meant to be homages to both his more traditional costume and that cover. In the first issue readers were introduced to Captain America, Bucky and Red Skull. While a lot of writers and artists have tackled Cap's adventures over the years, some of the most famous are from his time in the 1940s (when he was first created by writer Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby) and then in the 1960s when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby worked together on Cap's new adventures. Stan and Jack also are responsible for co-creating iconic Marvel figures including the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers. Jack Kirby is called the "King" of Comics because of his dynamic art style, insane designs for different machinery and for creating an art effect called Kirby Dots, which are dots of black ink used to symbolize pure, intense power.

Steve jumped on the (practice) grenade to save everyone and sacrifice himself. The other soldiers/candidates ran away to save themselves. Steve crashed into the store window because he was running so fast for the first time. Faster than he thought so he didn't make the turn (correctly). In Hulk, they were trying to recreate the super soldier formula that worked on Steve. (Vita-rays on Steve, Gamma rays on Bruce). Keep going, things pick up even more from the next movie.

Hey Emme, Hydra is not an acronym like S.H.I.E.L.D. In Greek mythology, the Hydra was a serpent with numerous heads. The Hydra regrew two or even three heads for every one that was cut off.

Just in case you're interested in a bit of background on the character of Captain America in the comics...Captain America was originally created during World War II by the writer/artist creative team of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. In the movie they showed kids reading a comic which has the original cover of the actual first issue - with Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw. Publication of Captain America stopped sometime in the 50's, I believe. The comic book "Marvel Universe" started in the early 1960's with the publication of The Fantastic Four, helmed primarily by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby (who co-created Captain America back in the 40's). Marvel kept adding new super-hero titles and they decided to bring back Captain America. So, they came up with a story where the Avengers find a man frozen in a block of ice floating in the ocean. It turns out to be Captain America who had been frozen since the end of World War II. I think the movie did a good job incorporating all of that background of the character into the story Another fun nod to the original comics - at the World's Fair we briefly see a human figure contained in a glass container. That is The original Human Torch. At around the same time that the original Captain America comics were being published in the 1940's, they also had a popular character called the Human Torch who was an android that would burst into flame when he came into contact with oxygen (thus the glass container). In the 1960's, just like with the Captain America character, they (kind of) decided to bring back the Human Torch. But this time he was a human not an android and they made him a member of the Fantastic Four. And in the Fantastic Four movie from 2005 (not part of the MCU) the role of the Human Torch was played by...Chris Evans!

Skinny Steve was a combination of things. They included Chris Evans acting, a smaller body double, and very talented programmers. Also, Neal McDonough, who plays Dugan, actually grew that mustache.

The bit about punching Hitler is a reference to the very first issue of the Captain America comic, where he punches Hitler on the cover. It was published in the middle of 1941 (months before Pearl Harbour) and was actually very controversial at the time, because a large portion of Americans wanted to stay out of the war and opposed anything that might antagonize the Germans. Creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon got some nasty letters about it, though others (including NY Mayor La Guardia) expressed support for the two. Kirby died in 1994, but Simon lived just long enough to see this film, when it came out in 2011.

Great movie. Steve is my favorite Avenger. I was a skinny kid who got picked on. The dummy grenade scene ("Is this a test?") still gets me shaken up. Oh, and the guy who calls Steve "Tinkerbell" during his show, is Hodges who he was at training with Col. Philips.

Once they went to Europe to fight, they never went back to America. They would’ve had to take a ship to get back & forth. (there weren’t any planes that could bridge the distance. Not many, anyway). They were just at their American headquarters in Europe, behind the lines of advance.

I really like this movie because Chris Evans is definitely the best actor to play the Star Spangled Man with the Plan aka the Super Soldier aka Captain America because he really fits the role by is skill, training to stop Hydra and to stop their leader the Red Skull, Fantastic reaction Emme and I cannot wait for your reaction to the Avengers.

42:22 Funny you should say that. It wasn't bubblegum that originally inspired the character's appearance, rather a hot fudge sundae... "Among other "back in my day" moments Joe Simon takes some time to tell of how he came about the creation of the uber-evil and Nazi sympathizing Red Skull. Now we needed a villain for inside the comic, too. ... Even sitting at lunch, I was always thinking about heroes and villains, with all sorts of ideas swimming around in my head. Next thing I know, I had a hot fudge sundae sitting in front of me, with the vanilla ice cream, and the hot fudge is running down the side. It was intriguing. The hot fudge looked like limbs-legs, feet, and hands-and I'm thinking to myself. Gee, this'd make an interesting villain, I mused. We'll call him Hot Fudge ... Just put a face on him, and have him ooze all over the place. You have to be stupid to be in this business. Nevertheless, I did some sketches, right then and there. And I Iooked at them. Nah, I thought. Who would believe anything like that? But I looked again at the sundae, and I saw the big cherry on top. The cherry looked like a skull. "Wow," I said to myself. "Red Skull ... that sounds good." And it made a lot more sense."

This remains one of my favorite MCU movies. Many people prefer the second Cap movie, and I totally get why. But I'm also the guy that prefers Batman Begins to The Dark Knight, so maybe it's just me :)

Funny, I watched Saving Private Ryan when I was 8yrs. old. My dad’s decision. Was curious the whole time, wasn’t bothered with all the gore, & stuff. I didn’t even know what was in us. You know… organs & stuff. I alway admired Jackson the sniper & the cool German tanks. Again, that’s me as a kid. Everyone has a different reaction to things including war films. Played FPS games back then before even watching the film. Not just PC & console but I too played arcade games. Preferably, anything that I can use to shoot so… watching things go pew, boom, bang was all the excitement that mattered to me. After growing up, I realized parts of reality especially after watching Saving Private Ryan several times.
