At some point, I do hope you watch the series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”. I believe you’ll really like how intertwined it is with the MCU movies. It eventually does its own thing but it’s really fun to see what’s going on outside of the movie universe.

Remember that the first dozen show are stand alone as the had to wait for hydra's coming out to start running with the MCU. Now some fyi. The mask makes up a lot of aos season 2. The thing that fury uses to get out of the SUV comes from agent coulson's team in aos, I believe they named it the mouse hole. You should also react to agent Carter, only 2 seasons but very good if you want to see more of her and what happened after WWII. It also helps with how she helps start shield.

It's funny you mention Black belts and gymnast skills. Georges St. Pierre who plays Geroges Batroc at the beginning, is a legitimate black belt in 3 different Martial Arts. And yes, he's also a trained gymnast that has trained with the Canadian Olympic team on multiple occasions. And he is one of the greatest and most respected UFC fighters of all time.

And he's playing Batroc the Leaper from the comics who is one of Cap's arch-enemies. Batroc is supposed to have extra-ordinary abilities. Note movie Batroc has a purple and gold color scheme, just like comic book Batroc.

I don’t care what anyone says, this movie was the peak of the MCU. The action was so amazing, grounded, and well choreographed and the writing… such a great story.

It’s my fave Cap film, obviously Civil War is a really good film but I hate seeing Cap and Iron Man fight, it was upsetting as essential as it was to the story

One of the things I got a charge out of was the big bad was played by Robert Redford. The Russo brothers specifically said that they were going for a '1970's paranoia thriller' feel. One of Redford's films is a classic in that Genre, Three Days of the Condor. Part of the reason Redford agreed to take the role is that as a director, the MCU effects heavy type of film is different than the type of filmmaking he knows. He was interested to see how it works from the inside.

Would've been really cool if we got more Captain America, Falcon, and Black Widow together doing slightly more grounded adventures, instead of the insane CGI fests that happened later on. As a trio they have a lot of chemistry, none of them are magic, although Captain America is pretty close. Just do some crazy spy shit together, leave the insane technology and technobabble behind.

​@@dylanburton4955Civil War is also an excellent film and a great follow up to Winter Soldier, especially with how it continues Bucky's storyline. I think though that the hype was so high for Civil War that pretty much nothing the film did would ever live up to that. Plus the cast did get a bit bloated with all the Avengers on screen. Still well done though and I'd say it's a top-tier MCU film.

The movie's title actually has a double meaning. "The Winter Soldier" is obviously a reference to Bucky, but it's also a reference to the work of Thomas Paine. During the American Revolution, he wrote about "the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot" (people who only stand up for what's right when it's safe and easy), as opposed to "the winter soldier" (people who fight, even when things are hard). So you could say that Steve is the REAL Winter Soldier.

For my generation, "winter Soldier" evokes the Vietnam Veterans Against the War "Winter Soldier Investigation" from early 1971which sought to publicize war crimes by US armed forces and their allies in Vietnam.

I think there's even a triple meaning. As a Soviet operative "Winter Soldier" would be a reference to The October Revolution.

The Winter Soldier's theme was confirmed that it is actually Bucky's scream when he was falling to his "death"/rebirth. This is the first marvel movie that was directed by the Russo brothers, who are imo the best marvel directors so far. They are big marvel fans, and they try to create movies as good as possible, to not just make "another marvel movie" (not to say I dont like all of them, but smaller fans like to use this term). And you can see one of them at 30:43 who says "let me take her".

I do believe they said they try to make their movies "Honest Trailers" proof, and considering how Honest Trailers handled this movie they do a pretty good job.

What's also impressive is that they came to Marvel after working with Dan Harmon on "Community". Top-tier performances in two very different genres and mediums; that's not something you see very often.

“I’m not gonna fight you. Your my *friend* “ “Your my mission. *YOUR. MY. MISSION!* ” “Then *finish* it. Cause I’m with you, till end of the line” That whole exchange hell that whole scene may be one of the best in the entirety of the MCU, made me have tears in my eyes. Its because Steve doesn’t want to and would never hurt his friend or his brother, cause he loves him too much and would lay down his own life for him. The Winter Soldier is easily my favourite MCU film, even possibly it’s best and also one of the greatest spy and superhero films ever made, it’s perfect and absolutely flawless from start to finish.

In the scene when they wipe Bucky's mind after his encounter with Steve, the bald technician with the glasses and beard is Ed Brubaker, the writer who co-created the Winter Soldier in the comics. (He didn't create Bucky, but he was the one who brought him back as the Winter Soldier.)

Which is kind of more impressive, because IIRC, the original Bucky was a bog-standard kid sidekick, basically bootleg Robin. Taking a character like that and giving them depth is arguably harder than just writing a character with depth from the get-go.

This movie blew me away when I saw it in theaters for the first time. The unexpected Hydra twist alone was a lot to take in, especially it's impact on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series, but learning that characters like Gary Shandling's Senator Stern being Hydra totally changes MCU moments like that courtroom scene in Iron Man 2. Now we know why he wanted Tony's tech so badly.

Agreed, going back and rewatching all these movies after seeing them - you can pick out all those subtle little details. The writers & directors did a great job with all the different call back Easter eggs in future movies

Pararescue doesn't get talked about a lot, but those guys are absolutely amazing, they are like, a Navy Seal, Navy Corpsmen and air traffic controller rolled into one. These are the guys sent in to rescue other special forces like, Navy Seals, Delta's, Green Beret and Marine Recon. The training school they go through is commonly and affectionately referred to as Superman School, they are no joke, so while Sam may not be enhanced like Steve, he is far from just a normal guy, also their motto is, "So Others May Live"! which really sums up their character.

I'm not sure most people know that the Air Force even HAS special forces divisions, but Pararescue are the ones that other SpecOps folks look at and go "those guys are fuggin' nuts." Well, Pararescue and EOD.

Also, for some comics context, the story of Bucky Barnes is actually a pretty fun bit of comics lore. So Captain America is one of the oldest comic book characters and actually precedes the creation of Marvel Comics. He was created for Timely Comics (IIRC), which was later absorbed by the company that eventually became Marvel. He was created during WW2 as a propaganda comic and, as was common at the time, given a preteen boy sidekick along the lines of Robin (to Batman). Publishers back then thought the boys reading comics wouldn't be able to identify with an adult male character, so they would give their heroes boy sidekicks for the audience to have a character to identify with. So Bucky was this unpowered 13-year-old boy who help Cap fight Nazis. Crazy. After Marvel Comics formed and the Avengers were created, it was decided to bring Cap back into action (Avengers #4) and the "frozen in ice" story was created. But by this point, the 1960s, boy sidekicks were seen as kind of dumb, and they didn't want to bring back Bucky, so they killed him off in the same flashback story that leads to Cap being frozen in ice. Coping with his feelings of guilt over Bucky's death was HUGE part of Cap's early characterization and really cemented him as the Sad Philosopher Warrior archetype that has defined him ever since. For the next 50 years, Bucky remained dead as a doornail -- to the point that Bucky was considered one of the three characters who absolutely COULD NOT be brought back to life (the other two being Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy from Spider-Man). Then in the early 2000s, comic writer Ed Brubaker did the impossible: He brought Bucky back to life in a way that didn't piss fans off and was cool, with the revelation that Bucky had survived his death and been captured by the Soviets, who turned him into The Winter Soldier, a cyborg assassin they would freeze between missions, so that by the time Steve encounters him in the modern era, he's aged up from 13 to 30. In the movies, obviously, they just made Bucky Steve's best friend of the same age and better set up the eventual transformation by having him be the subject of Zola's attempts to recreate the super soldier formula (which is so subtle in the first movie most people miss it, but go back and watch it again knowing what you know now and it's obvious).

Agent Sitwell (the bald guy with glasses) being HYDRA was something of a gut punch for the people who watched Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., because he was a recurring characters on that show. Showing the Triskelion's exact coordinates on screen was also a nod to the series, because they'd always display "Location: Classified" for all the special S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities they'd visit on the show, and finally we get one that everyone knows where it is.

Interesting, thanks! Painful to experience, but impressive narratively. That gut-punch made the scene where Steve reveals the existence of HYDRA as the helicarriers are about to launch so much more resonant and meaningful, as it made the audience empathize directly with the characters and also gave their instant responses a lot of weight in demonstrating their values. If they stood with Cap in that moment of greatest doubt, they're unquestionable. Which is also a smart way to lay to rest any suspicion of other potential betrayals within SHIELD. The Russos really put on a masterclass here, the first of many.

I like it better that Steve and Natasha are friends rather than getting together. For me it goes to the one exchange of lines, where she says something along the lines of she could be whatever he wants her to be and he says how about a friend. She's spent her life as a spy, using seduction techniques to be whatever a guy wants and she's falling back on that when she says it. But then she's instead able to be herself, and a friend.

Natasha in the movies has great respect for Rogers and she does not feel worthy to be with him. Similar to her relationship to other character in later movie. This is why she is like flirty friend rather than love interest.

@@jestbone89 I think that's a bit simplistic, though Natasha's certainly got a lot of guilt. But she also knows Steve doesn't care; he sees who she's chosen to be when she got the chance to make the choice. We're so conditioned to see every mixed-gender relationship as romantic that we find it a bit hard to grasp one that isn't, but Nat and Steve just really care about each other platonically, in the same way that Nat and Clint do. And that's cool to see, because it creates far more possibilities both in this world and in films generally, and helps address some of the weirdo reactionary hyper-gendering we've been seeing culturally for the last 40-odd years, which is both reductive and boring as shit.

​​​@@michaelccozensHonestly the only relationship that makes sense with Natasha is her and Bucky as they have similar life experiences with the Soviets and they dated in the comics. But they honestly didn't need to put her with anyone since they didn't follow that storyline. That being said, her and Bruce's relationship was really weird as it came out of nowhere.

Bucky’s story is pretty well-matched with his story in the comics: Cap’s sidekick turned assassin. Most of the actors are familiar with the comics and occasionally make jokes about which things are different in the movies

Except that several decades went by with Cap in the modern world before Bucky came back. It annoyed me that they brought him back so quickly. It would have had more impact if they had waited longer to bring him back.

​@@PhilBagelsNot really. The comics operate on a sliding timescale that's dated back to the first FF issue. This means that no matter what the spaceflight that the FF first took happens 13 years before whatever year it currently is in Marvel. So while it did take actual decades to bring Bucky back in the real world, it was shorter than that in marvels timeline.

@@icegodsavior8885 Uh, no. The whole point of the FF's original space flight was that it took place before any actual space flight in the real world. Time does actually move forward in the comic books, and events in the past get further and further away from the present as time goes on. Which is irrelevant to my point anyway. The impact was huge when they brought Bucky back in the comics because so much time had passed for the readers. But death has become almost meaningless in the movies if you die in one movie, but then immediately come back in the next one.

@@PhilBagels Except you’re wrong. Marvel does have a sliding timescale. The whole space race thing hasn’t been a contributing factor for the FF’s flight in years. This was revealed in David Anthony Krafts Comics Interview issue 25, which was released in the 80’s. This is not arguable. It is relevant. Unless you were saying that the mcu should’ve waited a decade of real time before bringing Bucky back. Which is kinda dumb. Why would they wait a decade or even half of one to bring in the Winter Soldier?

The "whole space race thing" was the main reason for the FF's space flight, and it happened in the 60's - not 13 years ago in 2010. And anyone can say anything they want in a published interview. That doesn't mean it's correct or consistent with everything that's been published in the comics for over half a century. And yes, it's still utterly irrelevant to my point. Nobody said they had to wait ten years before Winter Soldier.

Tom Hiddleston said that the studio wanted Jim Carrey as Loki and not him because he was an unknown. But as Hiddleston was friends with director Kenneth Branagh, Branagh went to bat for him to be cast and the rest is history.

Steve gives the speech "Hydra is inside the Shield, infiltrated. Help me" I was moved. But I was more moved by the curly haired man who faced a terrorist assassin, while he was unarmed. "Captain's orders" For me, the biggest hero of the movie.

Secretary Alexander Pierce (Hail Hydra) is played by Academy Award winner Robert Redford. Many consider him one of the great American actors. He has acted in lots of films.

Samuel L. Jackson famously got a 9 movie deal in 2009 to play Nick Fury, after Iron Man. It was totally unprecedented, and signaled Marvel's commitment to the MCU as an ongoing shared-universe movie IP for at least 10 movies. This film is only the 4th movie to fulfill that contract, and his fifth appearance overall on the big screen.

I always thought Scarlett Johansson looked like a young Jenny Agutter so having Natasha 'impersonating' the senior female SHIELD officer was a nice touch. Jenny was in a load of movies, most memorably 'Logan's Run' and 'An American Werewolf in London'.

The winter soldier theme that sounds like "a woman screaming" actually is bucky's scream when he fell from the train in the first movie.

Great reaction. The gymnast on the ship, who was labeled as Batroc, is from the comics and is a villain named Batroc The Leaper. So his prowess was expected by those of us who are comics nerds.

When you said "I wonder if she had a family" and there was a picture of her family on Peggy's bedside table, I knew you were going to miss a few things. One thing being that Bucky was already being experimented on before he fell, which helped him survive the fall--except he lost an arm. The fact that that Fury mentioned his wife wasn't a metaphor, but speaking when you suspect someone is listening. Without going into everything, I would suggest that you rewatch. You will get so much more out of it the second time. I did.

And seconds before Peggy on the bed she talked about her husband in the video tape. Fury talking was kinda both a metaphor and a codename. Wife = work for Fury. He got separated from SHIELD, his work.

that elevator scene MIGHT be my favorite scene in the whole MCU. also, people don't know how much of a legend Robert Redford (the actor who played the main bad guy) is. the guy is a *prolific* actor.. (i hope you react to the movie Sneakers at some point btw.. he's great in it). anyway i loved the "weight" he put into that character. also, i think with Natasha and Steve.. the mixed signals imo stem from the fact that Natasha by nature is always in that "seductive" mode (she always had to be because of her job as a spy).. she may not be good at turning it off.. but Steve sees through it and knows that what she's really needing is a friend or a bro, not a love interest. so he's being epic-paladin good-guy with her, even though i suspect if he made a move, she would have gone for it. I like how the wrote the Steve Rogers character. like, he's kind of a boyscout.. the embodiment of lawful-good.. but he's not square or dumb. he's incredibly intelligent and seems like he would be super fun to hang out with hah

Hey, Emme! Marvel films hit their stride with "Winter Soldier" and it remains one of the highest regarded films in the saga. The movie represents a tonal shift in the MCU towards mature, gritty storytelling with real-world consequence which roped in many non-superhero enthusiasts. It was made in the style of 1970s political thrillers like "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View" with a healthy dose of "The Manchurian Candidate". As with all the best espionage films, the story was expertly filled with twists, double-crosses, skullduggery and shocking revelations culminating with an incredible race-against-the-clock crisis. Showing Captain America break faith with the institutions he serves due to his disillusionment with systemic corruption is extraordinary and demonstrates his integrity. The plot is drawn from 'The Winter Soldier' arc of Ed Brubaker's legendary 134-issue run on "Captain America" during the 2000s. Paired with the moody, naturalistic illustrations of Steve Epting, the duo revitalized the character and his supporting cast for post-modern readers. The bold move of resurrecting Bucky Barnes and reframing his legacy was a stroke of brilliance that left an impactful mark on latter-day Marvel comics. The element of SHIELD being infiltrated by subversives is drawn from the 1988 limited series "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" written by Bob Harras and illustrated by Paul Neary. The Triskelion as the headquarters for SHIELD was lifted directly from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe line although the film locates it in DC on the Potomac whereas the comics set it in New York Harbor. Similarly, the technological interpretation of Falcon is a nod to the Ultimate iteration of the character whereas the original Marvel iteration can telepathically communicate with birds and has a glider harness with mylar wings and titanium ribbing. Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were untested filmmakers who landed the plum gig after Kevin Feige saw their two-episode stint on the TV sitcom "Community"! Nevertheless, the brothers knocked this film out of the park and were tapped again to continue guiding the good Captain's adventures down the line. The action sequences are phenomenally staged but grounded enough that you feel the weight of each impact and only realize you're watching a superhero film when Steve intermittently exceeds human limits. The opening hostage rescue, the Fury ambush, the sniper attack, the elevator brawl, the Quinjet takedown, the freeway chase, the underpass shoot-out and the climactic Triskelion assault are all top-tier set pieces that are thrilling to watch! Despite wall-to-wall action, there is enough downtime to prevent fatigue, to advance plot like Hydra's insidious long-game and to build character like Steve's bedside scene with a senile Peggy. I especially like the use of the real-life 'Operation: Paperclip' in which 1,500 Nazi scientists and engineers were granted immunity and recruited by the CIA's precursor, the OSS, to work for the US government. In the film, Hydra scientists like Arnim Zola use the opportunity of this brain-drain to embed themselves in SHIELD from its very inception. The cast is remarkable. Steve Rogers comes into sharp focus here and Chris Evans truly made the Captain his own the third time around. Carrying over from "The First Avenger", Sebastian Stan returns as a grimly resurrected James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, Toby Jones lends his voice to the disembodied digital form of Dr. Arnim Zola and Hayley Atwell briefly appears as an aged Peggy Carter. Anthony Mackie makes a strong, likable impression as Sam Wilson aka Falcon as does Emily VanCamp as undercover Agent 13. They join returning allies Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury who gets showcased in a hair-raising action sequence all his own! Having an actor of Robert Redford's stature play Alexander Pierce was not only a casting coup but paid tribute to his role in "Three Days of the Condor"! Rounding out the villain roster is Frank Grillo as a pre-Crossbones Brock Rumlow and UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre as French mercenary Georges Batroc the Leaper, two traditional Cap antagonists. Callan Mulvey plays the itchy trigger-fingered double-agent Jack Rollins. Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was introduced in "Thor" and was seen throughout the saga in films, One-Shots and "Agents of SHIELD" episodes, is revealed as a Hydra sleeper along with Garry Shandling as Senator Stern returning from "Iron Man 2". The head of Hydra himself, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, puts in a cameo for the end-credit scene as do the Maximoff twins, Pietro aka Quicksilver and Wanda aka Scarlet Witch, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. World Security Council members leave their shadowed holo-conference screens to show up in person this time with European representative Hawley, played by Jenny Agutter, being the only returnee from "Avengers". North American Councilman Rockwell is played by Alan Dale, South Asian Councilman Singh is played by Bernard White and East Asian Councilman Yen is played by Chin Han. Steven Culp and Nestor Serrano have bit parts as irate Congressional Committee members who grill Natasha. Gary Sinise lends his voice to the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit as narrator. TRIVIA: 1. Nick Fury relates that his grandfather was an elevator operator which is what Samuel L. Jackson's real-life grandfather did for a living. 2. When Alexander Pierce opens his refrigerator, a jar of Newman's Own sauce is clearly visible as an homage to the two times Redford and Paul Newman shared the screen. 3. Steve's catch-up list differed by country but had seven fixed items: Thai food, Star Wars, Star Trek, Nirvana, Rocky, Rocky II and Troubleman. The countries for which items were added to the list include the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America collectively. 4. Nick Fury's tombstone bears the epitaph "The path of the righteous man. Ezekiel 25:17". This was Jules Winnfield's favorite verse in "Pulp Fiction", a character Jackson is famous for playing. 5. The Winter Soldier's moniker comes from the Thomas Paine quote that "the summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." 'He' is the winter soldier, the inverse of 'the summer soldier'. EASTER EGGS: 1. When Steve and Natasha enter the old SHIELD headquarters at Camp Lehigh, they find portraits of SHIELD's three founders: Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. 2. Sitwell reveals Zola's algorithm is targeting potentially problematic persons of interest like Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange. This is the first reference to Doctor Strange in the saga. 3. Agent 13's real name is revealed as Sharon by Natasha. This hints at her familial tie to another MCU character for comic readers who know the implication of the name. 4. Although corrupt in the film, Jack Rollins is the actual name of a heroic SHIELD agent from the "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" comics who alerts Fury to the enemy infiltration. CAMEOS: 1. Co-director Joe Russo plays the underground doctor tending to Nick Fury during the scene where he reveals he's alive. 2. Captain America scribe Ed Brubaker plays the bearded Hydra scientist tending to the Winter Soldier during the scene where Pierce orders his mind wiped. 3. Stan Lee plays the Smithsonian security guard who discovers that Cap's World War II uniform has been stolen. END-CREDIT SCENES: 1. Hydra leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker plots to sacrifice minor Hydra cells to the ensuing manhunt while consolidating remaining resources to advance their research on the Chitauri Scepter and the two surviving guinea pigs of their human experimentation, the Maximoff twins, who are seen exploring their nascent abilities to move faster than the eye can see and to manipulate objects probabilistically. 2. Bucky visits the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian to learn about his and Steve's past. The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 17 - 22 of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD" which complete the first season of the show.

Great reaction, Emme! Interesting fact: The AI voice of Nick Fury's SUV is voiced by a famous narrator/voice actor by the name of Robert Clotworthy. You might recognize his narration on some shows, especially on The History Channel. Shows such as "Ancient Aliens" and "The Curse of Oak Island".

“Hail Hydra” To be fair, that’s the legendary Robert Redford. I’m sure if you’re killing him in your film, you want to give that actor his death scene. So, saying “Hail Hydra” is a simple, short, and applicable line for him to utter during the scene (as opposed to a death scene monologue. lol). :-)

I love this one a lot seeing more of how Steve navigates this world he's in, everything with Bucky was great and sad now him and Steve are the only 2 left from their time period, loved Natasha and Steve's dynamic in this too and Sam's seeing them work together and how deep Shield and hydra stuff is. It was SO cool watching Agents of Shield along with this movie. The show was building up to some kind of conspiracy, then you see in this movie that it was Hydra. After that the show directly deals with the fallout of what happens in this movie. Also Sitwell (the bald agent with the glasses) at one point says he’s going on a boat ride and leaves the show, then like a week later this movie came out and we see him on the ship at the beginning.

The valedictorian that Sitwell mentioned is not Peter Parker. Remember Peter Parker is in NYC, and he said the student was in Iowa City, Iowa so they could be just talking about maybe a random kid genius that is considered a threat to HYDRA.

By the way, if you ever are stuck in an elevator, you're pretty much in the safest part of the whole building at that point. There's no reason to panic and there is no rush to get out. If the elevator is stuck between floors, it's actually much more dangerous to try and get out on one of the two floors. That's generally the only way in which people get hurt or killed on modern elevators. Your first step should be to hit a button and see if you can get the elevator to go to a full floor. That often will fix it. But if that doesn't work, your best bet is just to wait for rescue. Use the call phone in the panel, and you'll be rescued pretty quickly. If you do try to crawl out between floors, the elevator could move unexpectedly and cut you in half. So just stay in the elevator until it's at a full floor. The amount of redundant safeties on elevators to protect the occupants is crazy. Most deaths related to elevators are of elevator technicians who are working on the thing, up on the roof of the car while it's out of service.

Those guys that was chasing Fury disguised as police officers is actually HYDRA, the evil organization that Steve fought in the first Captain America movie. And the movie has a crossover with Marvel’s TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where the events is happening at the same time in both The Winter Soldier and the first season of the show.

In the comic books, Batroc the Leaper (played by Georges St. Pierre) is a legit badass from the days soon after Steve was unfrozen. Batroc's specialty is savate (the French ballet/kicking martial arts style) and is the best in the Marvel Universe with that form. Combined with his specialty footware (razor sharp pointed ballet shoes, ground shattering thunder boots, spring leaping boots) , he gives Cap more than a bit of trouble in the comics books.

The gymnast guy at the beginning is Batroc the Leaper, whose whole schtick in the comics is that he's incredibly acrobatic and delivers devastating drop kicks. He also has a huge handlebar mustache and an outrageous French accent. He's usually paired with two other villains (a Spanish guy named Machete and some other dude I forget) and they are recurring villains in Captain America's comics. They've mostly been comic relief for decades, but I like the way they made Batroc a kind of badass mini-villain in this movie. Also, Shannon Carter is Cap's primary love interest in the comics and Peggy Carter is actually based on her. They tried to set up a future romance in this movie, but fans unfamiliar with the comic freaked out over the idea of Steve dating Peggy's niece so it doesn't end up going anywhere.

Feel like this is the movie where Phase 2 really begins. Like Marvel just stepped up their game with the story-writing and extended world building. Our core superheroes are expanding their circles with other superhero characters. We're getting more of an idea of the world our superheroes live in...where Hydra is a worldwide problem corrupting governments & industry.

The scene between Captain America and Peggy was actually in the comics between Bucky Barnes and his sister Rebecca. Zola/Hydra gave Bucky the Hydra version of Steve's serum so he became a super soldier which is how he survived the fall. They then brainwashed him for 70 years. Cannon has it he accepted the bite before wiping his brain as before hand it broke all his teeth and Hydra had to give him new teeth.

From ancient Greek mythology, the hydra was a multi-headed dragon. Every time you cut a head off, two would grow back, so it was very difficult to kill. IIRC, the way to defeat it was burn the stump before the heads started growing. One of the twelve labors of Hercules. Hence the slogan "when one head is cut off, two shall grow in its place!" It was an expression of belief that Hydra was undefeatable. You get tons of backstory about Hydra in Marvels Agents of SHIELD.
