Another thing to point out with Red Skull naming his weapon Valkyrie was since he was trying to go bigger than the Third Reich with Hydra, Operation Valkyrie was also the assassination attempt on Hitler (I think Tom Cruise made a movie about it) So on top of connecting it to Norse mythology, they are connecting it to him trying to rise above the Nazi Regime in a way

hey cap and dan. great commentary. lots of fun. you probably know this but the iconic scream you were talking about is called the Wilhelm scream and has been used in pretty much every movie that's had a battle or fight in it and even more that didn't. the scream came from a western movie and has been used in literally thousands of films since then and will be used in thousands more! now you know and knowing is half the battle!

One last thing Cap, since you guys didn't mention it but talk about Herr Zola throughout the commentary, but just after 1:03 when Arnim is fleeing the factory he grabs plans that looks like Zola suit I'm sure you can find screen caps of it online, so don't be surprised if he shows up in the new movie

Regarding the use of SHIELD in the past, I think in the extended alternate ending of this movie, where Nick Fury explains things more to Cap, Fury explains that the Strategic Scientific Reserve evolved into SHIELD. As for Bucky, I always got the impression that the scene where Cap finds him in the lab, strapped to the table, implied he was given a Hydra version of the serum, which sets up his return in a sequel when he falls into the canyon

You guys mention later that the Incredible Hulk doesn't kind again and it brought to mind the ending where he has control over his power when he smiles into the camera and his eyes turn green.

Red Skull in the comics started out as just a really fit and trained guy in a mask but years later he transferred his mind into a cloned super soldier body of Captain America and was planning on replacing him but something happened and a toxin he used at the time as his calling card sorta like the Joker that turned people's faces into a red skull like his name sake and he got his own toxin in his face, but because he was now a super soldier it didn't kill him but permanently changed his face!

I think the title of the film might refer to the fact that this man inspired the creation of the Avengers. SSR was pretty much the early incarnation of SHIELD so the title "Captain America: The First Avenger" makes sense to me

I also really don't know how you could call Incredible Hulk a miss. I think Ed Norton is a great actor. Fight Club, American History X,, etc. Also most people's complaints about super hero films is the third act and that probably has one of the best "boss battles" in super hero movies until Avengers.

I think Whedon did OK Captain America in a way. My understanding his he did a final script polish and added a few elements that strengthened how the mythology connected with Avengers.

Well, I think Cap was made before Disney bought Marvel...but Disney notoriously has a 'no smoking' policy in films. It's to the point where Kim Coates and Alec Baldwin had most of their scenes cut out in Pearl Harbour because they went against the rules and decided to *gasp* smoke in a World War II film lol.

I think saying that "you could essentially skip The Incredible Hulk" is... a little off. It literally has Tony Stark in it. You may say they changed the actor, But they did that for the Batman movies and no one coined the phrase reboot until it was an actual reboot. Also in this series they've changed War Machine's actor also but no one says you can skip Iron Man. Also eventually they will replace Stark so could you say skip every film in this series because it doesn't connect?

I think it's weird that Dan calls the Incredible Hulk a "miss." I guess we'll see why he thinks that if you guys do a commentary on the Incredible Hulk, but I think he's the first person to say that that film was actually a miss. I can take people saying that about the Bana film, but Incredible Hulk is leagues ahead of the Bana film. To put both films in the same category is a crime.

I like that they used Hydra but I strongly disagree that it would be disrespectful to use Nazis. Was Saving Private Ryan disrespectful? Indiana Jones? Inglorious Basterds? Plenty of movies use fictional characters to fight Nazis. But they are superheroes you say BUT saying that to take out that much evil you have to be super heroic is actually a huge complement to the soldiers. They fought for what's right and overcame like a superhero...

This movie was disappointing for me. I thought the first 30 minutes were good but it goes downhill after he gets the super soldier serum. To me it feels like it devolves into a montage with little story and the characters didn't have much depth. I felt like they rushed this out to get to the Avengers.

I'm wiring this at 40:00 min into the film, you need to discus the film more, and less of this side discussion. I know it's hard at times to keep the conversation going through a 2+ hr film but it's very boring to listen to talk not about the film, especially while I'm watching the film with you. I want to hear you talk about what we BOTH are seeing, and I'm just not getting that from you. I know it can be done, I myself have done full length podcasts with my friends and we did it successfully. As of right now you haven't done the Avengers (as far as I know) and I would really like to see you really discuss that film in a more direct manner. I will be their with you on all new podcasts and super hero rewinds...ok right now I just heard you mention for the second time "we are not the guys to do THIS podcast". Ok so maybe it is just your lack of knowledge on THIS film. I will watch the others and see if every thing I have just said was pointless and a wast of time lol. Keep up the good work on all other videos, I hope to see better in other podcasts (as I have seen before).

Why Hydra rather than NAZIs? Pretending that some fictional superheroes took down the 3rd Reich rather than the the real every day heroes (mainly russian) from the allied and occupied countries is disrepectful. Having fictional superhero good guys who are representative of the every day heroes who won the war defeat fictional supervillain bad guys who are representative of the malevolent evil within nazism is fitting.

Does this in your mind mock actual world war II history. I mean a Japense American a Black guy a French guy dum dum dugan and they are all lead by a woman. Oh and Captain America is the Superman of the Marvel universe
