Probably the defining song of later era Beefheart. He never lost it and this album in particular proves that. Absolutely amazing

for me it has to be bat chain puller or tropical hot dog night .....both are simply incredible and actual innovations over his earlier material in a few respects ......this song as good as it is could have easily fit on several of his previous albums , even safe as milk ....or if we are going instrumentals it would be 'a carrot ....' or to a lesser extent flavor bud living or evening bell . i dont think either would fit into his prior phases of output .

If I had to pick one defining song for later era Beefheart I'd say Sue Egypt. But this one is also awesome. He was making great music from the first album to the last. Even the Tragic Band era had its moments.

I'm so happy to see the comments below! Don was a genius, not many people get it or his music, but when you do, it never leaves you. There is some sort of depth there, and brilliant statements about the human condition, psychological, along with the incredible rhythms, at times it feels like anti-music, which makes it even better. You have to take some kind of a leap to let the music in, to be part of you. Disturbing at times, addictive at times, and sometimes it makes you laugh, you can't help it, it's just THAT good, how can it be that good?, that's the thought. There's not a lot of music that brings a smile to your face and makes you laugh instinctively. It's like "Did somebody write this and perform it? Holy shit!"

LOVE It!!! I SAW HIM LIVE BACK IN LATE 1980 AT a small club in Stanhope, NJ during his "DOC AT THE RADAR STATION" TOUR. He AND his magical band were brilliant, amazing...HE actually signed my TROUT MASK REPLICA ALBUM SLEEVE!!! VAN VLIET IN HUGE LETTER ON THE BACK OUTER COVER...HE SHOOK MY HAND WITH A SHY SMILE...THEN WALKED AWAY GOING UP STAIRS TO DISAPPEAR... HALFWAY UP THE STAIRS, HE STOPPED, GRINNING AT ME, AND THREW A FRESH RED 🍎 APPLE AT ME, WHICH I MANAGED TO CATCH (I WAS PRETTY DRUNK). MY FRIEND AND I HUNG OUT AND DRANK WITH THE BAND FOR BOUT AN HOUR...VERY COOL, FRIENDLY BUNCH OF GUYS... WHAT AN INSANELY GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!

The whole song in brilliant, wicked, swinging drums, and goofy rhythmic guitars. But it's the dirge hits in the "middle" "wham-wham-whamwhamwham" w/ Beefheart squeezing "Yeeew yooosed meee forran ashtraeee haaarrt." So weird, so wonderful.

Ashtray Heart" You used me like an ashtray heart Case of the punks Right from the start I feel like a glass shrimp in a pink panty With a saccharine chaperone Make invalids out of supermen Call in a "shrink" And pick you up in a girdle You used me like an ashtray heart Right from the start Case of the punks Another day, another way Somebody's had too much to think Open up another case of the punks Each pillow is touted like a rock The mother/father figure Somebody's had too much to think Send your mother home your navel Case of the punks New hearts to the dining rooms Violet heart cake Dissolve in new cards, boards, throats, underwear Ashtray heart You picked me out, brushed me off Crushed me while I was burning out Then you picked me out Like an ashtray heart Hid behind the curtain Waited for me to go out A man on a porcupine fence Used me for an ashtray heart Hit me where the lover hangs out Stood behind the curtain While they crushed me out You used me for an ashtray heart You looked in the window when I went out You used me like an ashtray heart

it's sad how people compare the white stripes to beefheart... just cause jack covers his songs (always, shittily) doesn't make him the next don van vliet. though it's good that jack is inspiring people to venture into beefheart. I listened to it again recently and I was like "This is really good but also kind of weird, I wonder why I'm drawn to it"- and then I remembered that I like Primus and they're fuckin weird, so this seems par for the course lol
