On a canal boat cruise from Providence R.I. to Chicago we watched the Badger come into port in Manitowoc. It was fascinating. Heading in at one point the anchor was dropped off the bow and the ship slowly swung around pivoting from the anchor till the stern was aimed at the loading dock. It was like a very slow-motion whip action.

Wow, for such a large vessel, she answers the helm quickly.

wow, I have to look for my wife because I think that was the time we went on the SS Badger and had a great meal and sandwich... it was a great trip and super nice weather.

Those three horns were a signal for the dock crew that they were coming into port. I should know, I've lived in Manitowoc for 15 years.

@@kathleenevans1201I was on the bridge when my father (who was a captain) docked the boat, and that’s why I’m such a good captain now.
@kathleenevans12019 ай бұрын
@boataxe4605 That's different. The captain is your father. I did the same when my father was piloting the vessel, and I knew to keep quiet when he was busy.

I am the only child out of 6 that was born out of the state of Texas. My mom always talks about the horns signaling for the dock crew that was coming into port. She was pregnant with me when my dad worked Manitowoc. I was born there and one day I would like to see my birth city.

If I remember correctly the way Captain Fitch use to call it- "On the Bud, In the Hole, Up the street" for coming into that port.

2 things; one, they usually give warning when about to blow which they didn't and 2, sounds like there's a delay when pulling the handle and the noise :D

Wow, no maneuvering thrusters on that ship. That's like driving a car that has no steering wheel, and you are simply controlling the direction of the car by using the throttle and emergency brake handle.

Maybe the Captains daughter? As a young boy I used to eat cookies in the corner of my fathers wheelhouse, I mean “Captains room”, and now I’m a Captain.
