The genius of the writing in this show is that no one character is ever objectively right. As with all true ethical dilemmas, the choice is not right from wrong, it’s wrong from wrong. Notice how neither character gains the upper hand conversationally. They are both right. Most scenes of this nature involve one character preaching to the other in order to eventually win them over. But in BS, both Flint and Silver know that the other isn’t going to budge. They also know that each of them makes sense. It’s just a matter of perspective and ambitions, not right or wrong. It’s brilliantly scripted. Although I’m very thankful they ended it after 4 seasons (since most shows overstay their welcome and drag on until they suck) I would still watch another 30 seasons of this show. A rare gem that is CRIMINALLY underrated.

Black Sails is the closest thing to Shakespearean writing we have in the modern day. Truly the best show ever made in my opinion. Breaking Bad follows closely, but the fact that Black Sails does in 39 episodes what most shows do (or fail to do) with 60-90 cements the fact that the show runners had a clear and precise trajectory for these characters and this story. A very rare masterpiece, and I feel privileged to be among the few who know it's worth

The one problem with doing a sequel to this show is that they left the ending ambiguous. It would be difficult to avoid spoiling that ambiguity in the sequel, unless they just completely left Flint out of it, which would be extremely disappointing. Not saying I don't want them to spoil the ambiguity mind you, I kinda wanted a more definitive ending to the show. I just think the writers and showrunners might consider this a potential hurdle.
@angusduffield-bish885

I'm pretty sure that the writers have said that they don't believe the story of Treasure Island actually happens in the Black Sails universe. That's what Flint is talking about when he says "We will have been for nothing. Defined by their histories, distorted to fit into their narrative. Until all that is left of us are the monsters in the stories they tell their children." Flint predicts Treasure Island, and all the stories of the pirates thereafter. Essentially, the writers of the show are suggesting that Black Sails could actually exist in the real world, but the stories about the pirates which we believe in are almost certainly untrue. It should also be noted that according to historical records Woodes Rogers came back to reclaim Nassua, and ruled as its governor from 1728 to 1732. He was able to acquire funds for this expedition mostly due to the popularity he had gathered from a book titled 'A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates'. Rogers was not the author, but supplied much of the information for the book, so you can imagine he painted himself and his enemies in rather deliberate lights.

These two are soulmates in every sense of the word. Flint and Silver have a stronger bond than each with their respective partners. They are the only two people who have known and seen each other in their own entireties since the beginning. The ones who understand the truth of each other's persona, and relate to each other more than anyone, precisely because they have went through the same experiences. They are so alike in so many ways yet so different. I can't imagine what it must be like, to have someone in your head like that. Even watching their dynamic develops have made me feel how deeply necessary they are to each other's existence. What a masterpiece of storytelling.

I love that they're both completely right. There are always manipulative, powerful people using and creating fear to keep everyone else in the fold, and they need to be regularly challenged and held to account. But when that's undertaken heedlessly out of resentment and lust for vengeance then the cure very easily becomes worse than the disease, because if people can't live their lives in peace then it rather defeats the point. A very timely message, in my opinion, and very eloquently and honestly presented. Brilliant show.
@TheStraightestWhitest
@TheStraightestWhitest 4 жыл бұрын
That's why it's a cycle. There's times of peace, during which the elite creep their plans in and grab for power. Then they're challenged, war breaks out, eventually the rebellion always wins, and peace returns. And history repeats itself. Everybody gets comfortable, another opening for tyranny presents itself, and someone takes it. Etc, etc. I'd argue we're living on the brink of just one such cycle ourselves right now within the EU and the USA.
@noxluxe8674
@noxluxe8674 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheStraightestWhitest I have a few issues with that theory. The first is the idea that "rebellion always wins", which just isn't true. As often as not, rebellions just escalate beyond sense and knock the house down, or provoke a crackdown, and leave everybody in an even worse and more miserable situation than they started in, providing even more opportunity and leverage to abusers of power in the process. The second is that that 'cycle' implies both that things don't change for the better without an explosive revolution, and that progress also isn't sustained over time, neither of which jams with modern human history. I'd argue that what's happening in the EU and the USA right now is that Flint's side of the argument has tried to take over our culture. People have gotten drunk on progress and totally forgotten to think about the very real costs and pitfalls, and that has all sorts of destabilizing effects. Loss of mutual trust across the political spectrum, the polarization of every issue to discourage debate, people being driven disproportionately into the opposite camp in sheer protest while the remainders insulate themselves more and more in their own bubble, escalating the tension and paranoia while distracting everyone from the issues we actually agree need to be handled... Some sort of explosive confrontation seems possible, I agree with that. Whether it ever NEEDED to happen in the first place is another matter entirely. That progress will win, or that the aftermath will be more peaceful and just than what used to be the status quo, is something I seriously doubt.

@@TheStraightestWhitest Can't speak for your government, because it's definitely not mine, but I have a hard time imagining any elected official getting a hard-on for forcing people to wear masks while the economy is about to topple and departments are being cut left and right. Maybe give the mask thing another few months before going to war over it? There are definitely instances of power being taken and then freely released, both historical and contemporary. I don't know where you got the idea that there isn't. My go-to approach is to first consider whether people are being dumb, and then whether they know more than I do. Sometimes it's worth trusting that things aren't as bad as someone else can make them sound, and that people are trying their best even if you expected better from them. How do you know the disease is a hoax?
@Biggiiful
@Biggiiful 4 жыл бұрын
@@noxluxe8674 the disease isn't a hoax. It's real. And it should be treated with concern. But it's vastly overblown and the response is 90% a political power grab. You know about The Great Reset? This is not a conspiracy. It's out in the open. Just Google it. World Economic Forum website. The lockdowns around the world actually don't make scientific or economic sense. They are using the virus to enact economic destruction globally. The Great Reset by the World Economic Forum has commercials saying things like "in 2030 you'll own nothing and you'll be happy." They are using leftist policies and pushing "global warming" to destroy the common man. High taxes for green energy that actually doesn't equal less carbon footprints....Covid lockdowns to destroy small businesses and make us more reliant on corporations. Big tech media silencing and removing anyone who goes against the narrative. Politicians saying to follow the science while they do the opposite with massive overreactionsand restrictions. I'm not some right wing conspiracy theorist. I'm very centrist. I don't believe all of global warming is a hoax. I like that gay marriage is a thing. I believe is some government services. But it's increasingly obvious to me that globalists have subverted both parties in america, although mostly the left, and they exaggerate leftist talking points and issues for mass hysteria in order to create compliance for authoritarian goals. BLM is run my self admitted marxists. Marxism is all power grabs. It's just a tool to create division ran by people who blatantly admit it. Yet people think it's about helping black people. It's nothing but leftist political grabs. None of this is liberal in the slightest. It's leftist.

Such a simple line, but possibly my favorite delivery in the entire show, Silver saying ‘I don’t care’ sums up the entire arc of his relationship with Flint. While they understand each other better than any other could, Flint could never accept that Silver truly doesn’t believe in the sentiment of it all, and that is why their partnership was always doomed. wrong! Though it seems that Silver was "wiser" here by not going on with the madness, Flint was always one step ahead! Flint knew the craziness of his ideas and overall endeavors. He always knew. But he had NOTHING ELSE to live for.....therefore he simply sought out someone to get him out of that mindset and finally set him free. Silver's character was unbelievable of course! Truly byond his years in terms of wisdom. But the chess player was definitely Flint. He could not bring himself to stop himself in his destruction.........so he both consciously and subconsciously aligned himself with the only person on earth that could, and that was Silver. again, Flint was great, but Flint was the real visionary of it all! I constantly find myself reminding people that Treasure Island IS the story that a teenaged boy narrates to fit his storytelling needs and also depends on that teenaged boy's recounting of stories that other people (like Silver and Billy) told him based on their own storytelling needs! Why believe even a single thing someone like Silver tells Jim about the past? And why do we believe every single detail that this teenaged boy is narrating to US as having happened? Since the bignning it had already all been mapped out that there were only going to be four seasons, and personally I'm glad they ended it when they did, on a high in terms of quality instead of dragging it out due to fan pressure and risking it becoming a shadow of what it was, as many shows often do.

What I love about this series is it basically combines the lore of Treasure Island with real world history. Nassau (Bahamas) was a pirate base, which was ultimately conquered by the British Royal Navy. In the novel, Captain Flint was described as a somewhat mysterious character, with no motives beyond a love for treasure. Long John Silver's motive was claiming Flint's treasure, until he grew a liking to Jim Hawkins. Here, Captain Flint is some kind of revolutionary who dreams of a free world for all downtrodden, be they pirates, fugitives, or slaves. John Silver however is a realist. He knows this is a war they can't win, so he tells Flint what he always wanted to hear: That his true love was waiting for him.

The VERY ROOT of TRAGEDY in this dialogue - from my point of view - lies in the simple fact, that NONE of These two men is RIGHT with his opinion. Both men reached "the point of no return", and they KNOW it!! In other words: BOTH men are RIGHT or NONE of them. What Impressed me the most, is the BRUTAL TRUTH and timeless ACTUALITY (!) of the messages, burried underneath the Dialogue ("NWO-Agenda"!!). The TRUTH hurts. This dialogue is really "out of time and space"... @ 07:55 - - > "... Distorted to FIT into their Narrative... Until all that is left of us are the MONSTERS...". -- > The ROOT CAUSE of ALL Problems.

It's such an underhanded thing but such an ingenius solution. Something you'd only do for someone you truly couldn't coutenance killing. For then John Silver couldn't have lived with himself either. People seem to balk at this compromise. It's the most human ending I could've imagined. Very well thought out.

This is the last time we see Flint in person. The final scene with him is being told by Silver, the story maker and liar. Silver tells us in the book that Flint drank himself to death. So I ask you, did he kill Flint or let him live?
@MohamedVallHamed23
@MohamedVallHamed23 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly believe he killed him. In episode 9 Flint tells Silver that even he can't make a story so believable that she will forgive him, and Silver proved him wrong by creating this happy ending story. Also after this scene you see some birds flying indicating a gunshot I think. Also when Rackam started narrating at the end he starts by sayind: " A story is true, a story is untrue". These are some of the reasons I strongly believe he killed him.

One scene makes me think he did kill Flint and another makes me think he didn't. After Silver returns to speak with Madi, he implores her with almost the exact speech he gave to Flint about "I'll stay here with you an hour...a day...a year" but he changes and adds to it. Why would he add to it or change it if it had worked earlier on Flint? Clearly because it DIDN'T work with Flint to change his mind and, thus, he had to kill him. And because of his love for Madi, Silver had to make sure the speech worked this time. But when Rackham returns to Lady Guthrie in Philadelphia to tell her what happened, she asks him point blank if Flint was dead. Remember, her cooperation hinged on Flint being killed. So, if Flint was indeed dead, all Rackham had to do was say yes. But he doesn't. He says Flint is no longer a concern. He's retired and therefore not a martyr to the cause. I think they didn't kill Flint but really did subdue him to bring him to Thomas Hamilton. "A story is true, a story is untrue." It only matters what people believe. And having the people believe that Flint is still a dragon in the darkness who can return at any time is more useful than a story where they dropped him off to be with his lover at the gay farm.
