Captain Kangaroo -- December 10, 1980 Episode

Dubbed an old VHS tape I had. It was recording CBS Daytime via CBS affiliate KPIX. John Schuck guest stars in this episode. There's an episode of Picture Page with Bill Cosby in this episode.
Part of the episode got cut off because of a segment from "Real People" was recorded over the beginning.
Sketches include: Dr. Silly Dilly, Beverly Square and Barnaby Box, Ludwig, The Toothbrush Family, Jungle Adventures.

I loved this show on CBS. The last time I saw CK was when he went to Saturday Morning & included cartoon shorts of "Motor Mouse & Auto Cat" & "The CB Bears". I especially remember the magic clown segment, & Bill Cosby's Picture Pages (Decades before...well, you know😔). Thanks for preserving this cool young nostalgia history here on KZbin. I shudder that kids today have no clue what fun TV was decades ago, when you didn't need cable TV, or before Cartoon Network came along. Never take this off EVER.

The condo building my parents and I lived in back in the 70s had a master antenna, and we would get CBS in both South Bend, IN and the local affiliate in Chicago, IL, so I discovered that I could watch Captain Kangaroo on the South Bend channel at 7:00 and the Chicago channel again at 8:00. I guess it came on earlier in South Bend because it was on Eastern time. I recall catching The Price Is Right after the 8:00 Captain Kangaroo. I also believe that I caught a game show called Spin Off one morning after Captain Kangaroo.

Now, the iguana with her me too movement is something I can stomach, not the one currently going on. Also, it must’ve been a Godsend for CBS to get Bill Cosby do Picture Pages on Captain Kangaroo, hoping it will bring better ratings.

I saw Bill Cosby in person at a standup comedy performance many years ago. He sounded really run down to me, like he was deteriorating in his old age. He also did a lot of stuff on The Electric Company in the early 70s.

This would have been a Wednesday morning. Monday December 8th 1980, 2 days prior, was one of the must traumatic days of my life and one i'll never forget; John Lennon was assassinated. :(

I'm watching Picture Pages. I remember back in 1977 doing Picture Pages along with the show. That was before Bill Cosby started doing it, and the song said "Time to watch the Captain do a picture page with you." Back in 1977, the address to get the Picture Pages booklets was in Pittsburgh, PA, but I remember my mother taking me to the local library in Chicago and they had a whole pile of the booklet for the current week on the librarian's desk. I remember picking up the weekly booklet once or twice and doing the activities along with the Captain. However, I was 7 years old at the time, and I quickly found that the activities were beneath me.

It's been more than 40 years since I've seen an episode of Captain Kangaroo and all its features. I'm watching the Toothbrush Family, and it's amazing how I remember the intro and the lyrics to the song they always sing. Now that I'm grown up, it cracks me up how Shaggy Dog Toothbrush freaks everybody out howling "Brrrrrrrr!" and they have to rescue him.

I just saw the Humpty Dumpty thing. I knew that someone would knock him off the wall. On Sesame Street, Kermit The Frog did Sesame Street News covering Humpty Dumpty, and after he was put back together, Kermit said "It's really nice to have you back" and patted Dumpty on the back and knocked him down, so I knew what was going to happen here.
