When people say Tom Hanks always plays Tom Hanks, I laugh at that nonsense. The scene at the end is one of the finest displays of emotional trauma ever.

Agree. That scene alone should have earned the director, Paul Greengrass, and Tom Hanks Oscars. With an honorable mention for the real-life nurse paying the examining nurse. Literally, just for that scene. The scene is always overwhelming every time you see it.

That scene looks so real. It's obvious that the navy nurses are real, because they just look like doing their job, that's not acting, it's real life. Tom Hanks, once more, great. This scene is one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen.

The scene near the end with Phillips and the female navy corpsman is one of the best acting I've ever seen. The stark contrast between Phillips barely holding it together and the corpsmans calm, cool, reassuring but also highly professional attitude creates a bewildering emotionality to the scene. I read the corpsman wasn't an actor at all, but a real world trauma medic (or some such) and was told just to treat Phillips like she would a real trauma victim. Absolutely brilliant, and what composure to keep it up in the presence of Tom Hanks heartbreaking performance.

Crazy enough, what you’re seeing was the 2nd take. Tom’s acting actually was so powerful and so authentic that it even stalled out the corpsman. He joked to her that “he was the one that was supposed to be in shock”. Just goes to show how phenomenal of an actor he is. Even an actual active duty professional was taken back by how realistic he was in being a trauma victim.

The film is pretty accurate, though Phillips spent more time in the lifeboat then depicted in the film. The SEAL team flew out from Virginia, and after crossing the Atlantic and Africa, they parachuted into the ocean, where they were picked up by another US Navy ship Halyburton, from which they were met up with the Bainbridge. The resolution at the end of the 3 SEAL snipers taking 3 simultaneous headshots from one moving vessel to another is in fact accurate. Two of the three snipers were also involved in operation Neptune Spear which was the mission where they killed Bin Laden. The lifeboat is on display in a museum as well as the 3 bullet casings.

In an interview Hanks said the first time he met the Somalis was when they burst into the cockpit, screaming and yelling. The fear on his face was real. He said they were the skinniest, scariest people that he had ever seen.

From Greengrass I recommend: UNITED 93, based on the true story of the hijacking of one of the 4 planes on September 11, 2001, and how the passengers decide to take action to stop the hijacking and regain control of the plane, really a very interesting story. tense, especially in the last part of the movie. It is a movie also told in this style of Captain Phillips, in fact the music of the final climax of Captain Phillips, is the same used also in the final moments of UNITED 93, really a great piece of tense and distressing music, I understand why Greengrass He decides to use it again in Captain Phillips, because it worked so well in the closing scenes of UNITED 93.

Barkhad Abdi, who played Muse, had no experience as an actor when he was cast for this movie. You mentioned Catherine Keener at the beginning. She's one of my favorite actresses. She's been great in everything I've seen her in, but she rarely gets recognition for her talent. I've seen her in 8mm, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Capote, Into the Wild, Synecdoche New York, Where the Wild Things Are, and Get Out. Her performance as Missy Armitage in Get Out really impressed me.

That final scene with Hanks is incredible, and tear-jerkingly sad to watch. Paul Greengrass’ film, The Next 3 Days, is a darn good suspense thriller starring Russell Crowe. This was definitely an edge-of-the-seat kinda movie. I was in college when the event took place but didn’t see it on the news because we had no cable. I don’t know if any good documentaries about it, however, the extras are worth watching if you’re interested as they delve a little into what actually happened. Supposedly when the Pirates boarded the ship, they really did tell captain Phillips that they weren’t Al Qaida and that it was just business. XS

Englishman Paul Greengrass is a superb director of realistic action. He always puts you right into the scenes at a break-neck pace. His superb, much-honored "United 93" (based on the true story of the revolt within one of the 9/11 hijacked planes) is a must-see, as is his docu-style look at the troubles in Northern Ireland, "Black Sunday," and his look at soldiers in Baghdad ("Green Zone"). And of course he directed several of the excellent Jason Bourne films.

The reason the Somali fishermen started hijacking ships for money, is because the large fishing companies, from other countries, came into the waters off Somalia (Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean), and started reaping hoards of fish. So much so, that they practically depleted the resource. The fact that most of Somalia is an arid region, and not suitable for farming, left the Somali people with nothing on which to make a living. So, they did what they felt they had to do. This may be an over-simplified description of what was going on, as I'm sure there are many other factors that contributed to their choice of this brand of lawlessness.

Ships initially came to when pirates approached. And then the ransoms became higher and negotiations took longer. I think a few crews spent more than a year as hostages in Somalia. Then ship started bringing on armed guards and installing other measures to protect themselves. The UN initiated a multinational task force that even the Russians participated in. Their purpose in that part of the world was to disrupt the piracy. The problem is it was a catch and release. They would incarcerate them and offload them in some country for trial and they'd end up back in Somalia. Somalia is a failed nation. They have no real government.
