The amazing thing is how they could create suspense so well with the "supermarionettes" - the acting's better than in many modern live action shows.

It was a kind of .... alternate reality for kids. Now you do this through graphic animation for video or computer. Similar but different. Puppets gave the better "feeling of actual room" lighting. These shows looked realistic, but also surrealistic. Alternate reality. As if your GI Joe was doing things on his own, not being guided by your hands. Anthromorphication and all that.

I understand that they would record the dialogue first, then that tape reel would play and trigger the relay and solenoid in the head of the puppet - thus making it look like the voice was in sync to the puppet lips moving. Not bad, and man .. such an incredible attention to detail. That's why these (Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet) were always (hands-down) the best thing on Saturday Morning TV for kids. Scared the crap out of a whole generation.

I will create shows like this today. There needs to be this kind of real danger on television.

I remember finding this horrific as a young kid! That flaming spark traveling up the handrail would have passed over his hand and maybe even whole body during the cutaway to Captain Scarlett! *shudder*

In all honesty- i think that it was just meant for a more mature audience than people today. I was raised on Stingray, Joe 90, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet in the 90's- and it never had a bad effect on me 2bh [= If anything, it tought me well about Death! ['=
