I'm surprised you didn't mention the change to the professor's scheme. Instead of forcing everyone to change their names, he tries to forcibly remove the sense of humor from everyone using Melvin's own lack of it. That way, no one could laugh at him again. It added to his more nefarious nature in the film. I will say, I did not realize how mean those two could be. I do think it helps to show the message of ''let kids enjoy things.'' George and Harold probably wouldn't be nearly as mean-spirited if the adults just let them be kids. In any case, good review!

Dreamworks has adapted other children's books into animated films (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Home) but they usually become In Name Only affairs, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if the film turns out to be good on it's own merits. Besides, they could get away with it because those books weren't exactly household names. I was pretty skeptical, but I think outsourcing it to a smaller budget made it a smaller more enjoyable film. Grand sweeping vistas in 3D animation do not a good movie make. 8:13: Actually, that's on the lunch ladies themselves, and even George and Harold didn't ask for that to happen, because the recipe asked for one batch of 10 cupcakes, made exclusively for Mr. Krupp; the recipe for "Mr. Krupp's Krispy Krupcakes" called for 1 egg, 1 ½ cups of Flour, 2 Boxes of Baking Soda, 1 ½ cups of sugar, ½ stick of butter, green food coloring and 2 bottles of vinegar (funny enough, they originally wanted to go for 1 bottle of vinegar and 1 box of baking soda). The lunch ladies decided to feed 1000 students instead of Mr. Krupp and hectopled the amount; going for 100 eggs, 150 cups of flour, 200 boxes of baking soda, 150 cups of sugar, 50 sticks of butter, 7 quarts of food coloring, and 200 bottles of vinegar. The Lunch Ladies fired themselves and put the blame on George and Harold over their own mistake, when George and Harold weren't even responsible for that poor decision, other than taking inspiration from a Baking Soda Volcano project their science teacher was giving demonstration... then again, the point of the books is that the adult characters act like it's George and Harold's fault, even if it wasn't.

You know I'm wondering if Dav Pilkey agreed with you that George and Harold go to far in the first two books because I don't remember them pulling anything like that again; for example they make a comic book making fun of there teacher for her birthday; but the book shows her being a complete bitch before then to justify why they did it. Also doing things like adopting Melvin's Bionic Hamster after her abandons it (Also it's not there fault he becomes a robotic snot monster hybrid thing at the end) Another good example in the 9th book showing a flashback to how they became friends and them again lashing out at a bully who's making everyone's life miserable and being nice to their classmates in the process. Also it's not really important because it's only revealed in the last book but Harold is gay; they meet his husband in the future, it's never really commented on but it's there.

Here in Australia, I remember everyone in primary school reading these books.

I actually always had a head canon that Krupp secretly liked the comics George and Harold made, and seeing them actually give him a reason for why he’s angry and miserable did make my ten year old self smile.

8:55 hear me out, I know why they did this: it's because we now know what happens when someone who's constantly causing misery and chaos for funsies and never face consequences from it, and we don't think it's cute anymore nor acceptable.

This one of all your videos I've watched finally got me to subscribe, and I am unashamed to admit it was largely influenced by the song at the end. Also, actually regarding the topic, I had classmates who read these books but I never did, however, the movie was HILARIOUS and I loved it! I still haven't read the books, but considering your assessment of them I don't think I really missed out.

I remember these books and Horrid Henry being some of the first books I was able to read by myself (and ripping out pages when attempting flip o rama)

I never read too many of the books as a youngin as I came from a particularly conservative part of the US, but I remember seeing the film in theaters as an adult (and watched it again after this review) and really enjoyed it. It felt like an adaption that while not word for word, perfectly captured the charm of the original books very well while improving on parts that were lacking in the original books (Pilkey's KZbin About section mentions being impressed by Krupp's humanization and wishing he had did that more in the books). Then again things like "fart with reverb" make me laugh uncontrollably, but even then I tend to not enjoy toilet humor too much. On a a note of "controversies", the books came under fire as well for not only toilet humor but the final novel showing the future where without any jokes or ambiguity had Harold be in a marriage with another man, which was kind of a big deal at the time in 2015 since gay marriage had only recently been legalized in the US. Combined with the things mentioned in the video, Pilkey is a solid dude.
