Mike the shifter tower doesn’t have to come off! Just turn the collar at bottom of shifter counter clockwise, and shifter comes right out! No need to remove any bolts on top of trans, just the pan of cover! Hope that helps! Keeps from dirt getting into trans too!

Well, Captain, you may not be doing a "how to," but you're reminding me "why not to." I think you've convinced me to try and find another rebuilt injection pump for my old diesel pasture pickup, instead of swapping it out for a gasoline engine. (Besides, I still don't have a halligan for disassembly purposes, and I've moved 250 miles away from where I knew all the folks at the FD).😁

Not sure how you do it but to keep track of all the nuts and bolts and little parts on a job like this I put them into sandwich baggies or other plastic bags and tape them to the component ie all the screws for the dash get taped to it, that way I don’t just have a big box of screws!
@LisaMedeiros-tr2lz
@LisaMedeiros-tr2lz 8 ай бұрын
That is how I do it to, except I will use an awl and poke a hole in the back and use a bag tie to attach it to the part it goes with. If there is something unusual about the part (i.e., one bolt longer than the other), I will write notes on a piece of paper, cut that off, and throw that in with the bag. No way to remember where everything goes. Doing this, I don't end up with empty holes with no fasteners, or any left over.

Hi Mike, if you have empty plastic containers from yoghurt or ice cream they can be very handy to hold parts, bolts etc. I also think that a plastic cat litter tray is a good tool tray for outdoor motor work. I have used these for rebuilding old cars and tractor. I also finger that speaker magnets under steel bowls are a great way to hold things in awkward locations. I am enjoying this voyage of discovery into the building of one truck from 2.

There's a hole for a pin (paperclip?) in that ignition switch. Pin it in place before you tighten the switch down to properly align the key functions at the tumbler.

According to Gary the pin is .047 (3/32) diameter You'll find the hole in the metal 'foot' of the switch, ahead of the actuator rod. Put the key in the lock position (push the button on the left of the column) and remove the key. Then you can tighten the slotted base of the switch. Remove the pin and check that the key will engage the starter and that everything that is supposed to work in run and accy positions functions.

I used to do it but wasn't very good at it. One time I swapped a gear box from manual to auto and changed the steering rack from manual to power steering. Then rolling down the street going slow and wondering what the clunking noise was the vehicle flipped on its side like a bomb had gone off! Turned out I hadn't tightened the front wheel nuts and one wheel came off and flipped it under the guard lol

Just a suggestion learned from experience gained the hard way. While you have the engine out, replace all vacuum lines. You will never have better access and unless you just did it yourself it is a huge headache saved later.

Had a friend who wanted to convert his old gas chevy truck to diesel. Thought swap the engine was all it would take. I spent a good part of the day showing him ALL of the differences between the two trucks. Both trucks were the same year and body style, and in amazing condition for their age and mileage. The diesel was four-wheel drive, and his gas truck was two-wheel drive. He was having second thoughts on the swap when he saw the amount of work he'd have to do. The only thing wrong with the diesel truck is it had no bed but used to have a flatbed that the seller kept. His truck quit running because his fuel tank was rusty. I convinced him to keep both. He could find a bed for the diesel for cheap, and replacing the entire fuel system in his gas truck was cheap also. He took my advice and kept both trucks. He even replaced the fuel tank and lines for the diesel since they were the original parts. Now he has his gas work truck for everyday use and the diesel for heavy hauling. He's in the process of saving up to have both trucks repainted. Frames will be sand blasted and recoated, and the body will be stripped to the metal and resprayed the factory original two-tone brown and cream. The interior of the cabs will be re-sprayed as well as the beds get bed lined. Of course he will do one truck at a time.

The heater blower motor that squeals like a piggy can be fixed easily, at the hump at the center of the motor use a center punch to make a small hole then add some tranny or motor oil. Yoycan also drill a small hole. When its done dab some silicone on the holt and your done.

Don't forget to swap the brake booster. The diesel will have hydro assist while the gas has vacuum assist. They both work fine but the vacuum will be a little easier to plumb since you're putting the gas in it.
@jimurrata6785
@jimurrata6785 8 ай бұрын
He could swap the diesel's power steering pump with return for the hydroboost. Id prefer the hydroboost over the vacuum assist but to make it "right" Mike would either swap the brake pedal from the Superduty or drill another hole in the gas pedal arm. That pedal is tougher than shoe leather and harder that a coffin nail. (use carbide because a cobalt drill bit will dull)
