Minecraft actually has a really simple and poor game play loop. Chop Tree, upgrade your gear in a linear fashion (maybe skip a few like gold and leather gear), mine, kill dragon.

You should definitely keep your elytra/chestplate in your hotbar. Since you can change between them now just by right clicking, being able to swap quickly could possibly save you in a lot of situations. Also, it’ll allow you to determine easily if you are wearing your elytra before jumping off a cliff, RIGHT?
