Captions - Essential for Learning (OC)

Captions, English subtitles that also describe sounds, are essential for Deaf and hearing impaired students and improve comprehension for ESL students, struggling readers and children with learning disabilities. They are already available on many DVDs, online videos and TV shows used in class.

The primary term used in Australia, as used by a number of peak representative bodies including Deafness Forum of Australia, is 'hearing impaired'. People often think that subtitles are only of use to those with hearing impairments but that is not the case. Research has demonstrated the link between the use of subtitles on video and an ability to improve kid's Reading & Literacy skills. Very nice to move text around from up to down, from left to right side - whenever title or name of person appears on the screen. Pros are different colors of text - should be one color for the whole video - and "Hearing Impaired" should not be used although it is such wrong definition. It should be rewording to deaf and hard of hearing. Hearing impaired is wrongly labeled and misleading. ~ CM
