Congrats on all the babies! They look really great. I agree with not breeding them until they have had the time to fully mature. My oldest CWD is somewhere between 2.5 - 3 years old and she's still growing. I can't imagine trying to breed her right now even if she is physically capable. Since female water dragons will lay eggs without mating I figured that I would wait until she has shown she is ready by laying an unfertilized clutch before even considering breeding her. I guess if she reaches the 6-7 year age range without laying any eggs and is at her full growth I might look at other options, but for now I'm letting her go at her own pace.

It is totally normal for water dragons to be pooping everyday! They have a high metabolic rate and burn through food very quickly! As for the consumption of soil, some reptiles are known to eat substrate if they are nutrient deprived and therefore are looking for nutrients in the surrounding soil. Try checking to see what dietary supplements you are using and look into adding more variety in the diet of the dragons and the feeder insects they consume.

This really helped me. I was confused why my new baby was always sleeping and I thought his sleep schedule might be messed up because he got delayed and ways in a box for 4 days but after hearing about the 6500k led you put on there I took a plant grow light from a different enclosure I have and he just sprung to life! thanks

Once they are eight weeks old (2 months). Their umbilicus will have fully healed. So then you can add a substrate to the enclosure. Be it Zilla Jungle Mix, Zoomed Forest Floor, or any substrate of choice.

@@AlexsAgamids You said this in your juvenile enclosure setup video that you dont want standing water in Chinese Water Dragon enclosures but why? Ive always done drainage layers on my vivariums and I was wondering if you said that because they need to be able to dry off still but I live in a really dry place and my paladarium that has 2 inches of water running all the way through the bottom still sits at 50% humidity if I dont mist enough to keep it up to 80%. If thats why then I think it would be ok because it helps keep humidity up but not up so much they cant dry off.

A drainage layer is not the same as “standing water on the bottom of a single substrate layer”. I see lots of folks who run into issues where they overspray a layer of Jungle Mix or Forest Floor resulting in stagnant water collecting at the bottom. A drainage layer would be a efficient method if you find you’re using vast quantities of water in order to keep your humidity around 80%RH for your Chinese water dragon.

Hey alex buddy, just a quick question for ya if you have a minute or two to reply. I just hatched my first ever batch of CWD 2 weeks ago, all seem to be doing great so far. What i am wondering is what is the recommended age i should let them get to before i start to look for forever homes for them.

At as minimum I suggest 9 weeks. However: if this is your females first batch, it won't hurt to hold them for around 12-15 weeks because a females first batch isn't as strong as her latter clutches.

Hey Alex! I have another question. Can Chinese Water Dragons drop their tails? I have seen people say both they can and can’t. I’m not entirely sure what to believe.

Hello. So they "can" drop their tails. But usually it in when the tail is forcefully pulled and or torn off. I've had many babies try to go at each other once they reach 4-5 months of age. So tail biting is common. However, if the dragon is under eighteen months old. The tail will grow back somewhat as a black "stub".

Hey Alex, I’ve been watching you vids for a while and just subscribe yesterday, you mentioned you had a sick baby dragon, and I am dealing with one now. Could I reach out to you on what you recommend for a upper respiratory infection that I can do besides the antibiotics I started it on last night?

At the moment none of my water dragons are sick. However, as far as antibiotics go. That'll be your best bet on getting an upper respiratory infection taken care of. I would suggest that you avoid handling your dragon as excessive handling will no doubt stress your lizard. Raising the ambient temperatures will also help speed up the lizards metabolic rate and help boost its immune system. Your local exotic vet will always be your best option.
