ABOUT:
In this video I'm going to work on a quite demanding, outdoor portrait in Capture One 21. Strong contrast - underexposed, backlit model against bright, dramatic and overexposed sky. Linear Response Curve is the perfect tool to get the workable foundation for this edit. We will throw to the mix some HDR adjustments and color grading with Curves to create moody atmosphere.

My pleasure Luv! I didn't know the word "magnanimity" - great of mind and heart. It will take me another 47 lives to try to get near to this standard. Thanks 😁

@@KasiaZmokla In Spanish, we have the same word: "magnanimidad," it sounds kind of literary, but it describes your generosity of spirit well. Lol 😅

One of your best videos yet, Kasia, with a consistent emphasis on skilled and subtle color-grading that is precisely what makes your content so unique. I have a question and a suggestion. You always extend the full saturation range in the Color Editor before anything else. Why? To me this seems counter-intuitive, since we usually want to edit specific colors. You are the only one I've watched who does this routinely EVERY time. One begins to wonder why C1 doesn't make this the default right from the start. Everybody talks about how powerful and flexible the Curves Tool can be, yet I suspect the majority, myself included, tend to ignore Curves more often and use other tools instead. Suggestion: I would love to see you edit something relying exclusively on Curves, insofar as that is possible (i.e. without using Levels, Exposure, WB or HDR). This might embolden and so encourage some of us to use them more often or, at the very least, give us a better grasp of what is actually happening under the hood with some of the other tools. Besides, we all love to listen to you murmur under your breath and begin to talk to yourself, as you lose yourself in your own private world while using them. ;)

Hahahaha, Randall if only you could hear the before/after video edit... Obviously English is not my native language so at times I'm near to scrapping 1/3 of the recording due to mistakes, dead end thoughts and so on. I wish one day i could just hit record and once it's ready just publish instead cutting and trimming. Oh well. You've already asked me as far as I remember about my "full saturation range" routine. You are probably right, it would make more sense to first asses the color range and then adjust. I'll try to remember it when editing next image, thanks for insisting on this. I've already made a video that shows curves-based workflow, but I can recored another one , why not. Yes, it definitely can be done, but for most of the people it would be more difficult than using dedicated tools. It can be a cool experiment though, I'm curious especially on comparing HDR made with curves vs dedicated HDR tool in C1. Muchas gracias! 🙋🏽‍♀️

@@KasiaZmokla It's precisely the difficulty that appeals. Most online tutorials stop in the middle without pushing the envelope. Most students will arrive at the midpoint without any trouble on their own, so there is a real need for skilled teachers like yourself to push them somewhere beyond their comfort zone. It's like the Army. If that drill sergeant wasn't in your face and screaming, pushing you, you might never have discovered your true potential.

Like Larssen’s “Hell Week”? That would be interesting - transferring such an idea into photo processing training. Edit or die 🤣🤣🤣

@@KasiaZmokla Exactly. I had an ancient Greek professor like that once, Father Swain, who would glare at you if you couldn't recite person-number-tense-mood-and voice instantly without hesitation for ANY given word. After three years of that (and there were only two of us in his class), I finally died. But I don't think too many of your students here will suffer the same fate. ;)

Thank you Kasia! Once again a very subtle and detailed editing. The curve tool seems to be your favorite tool. Color grading can also be achieved with the excellent color tools from C1? I'm still on the C20 version. The new style brushes are all well and good, but in my opinion are more of a convenience. Automatic labeling and predefined sliders. LG Armin

You are welcome Armin, yes, you have exactly the same powerful curve tool in C1 version 20. No need to upgrade, I fully agree with you on that. I'm on a subscription basis, so don't have to pay anything extra to get access to all the new advertised features. If I had to purchase the version 21 I would simply wait for something more exciting.
