Since one of the most important functions of flat frames is to remove dust from the finished picture wouldn't that much movement of the telescope defeat the purpose of taking them. Any dust that was on the lens when the lights were taken will either be gone or will have been moved or been added to so the dark dust images appearing on the flats won't match the lights - so they won't be removed. Not to mention the fact that the grain of unfinished timber is a dust collector.

It's been my experience that dust on my objective doesn't appear in my images. It's dust on the camera sensor or sensor window itself or even the filters that does show up. Those parts are fixed, so moving the rig doesn't affect the dust location.

Excellent - did you rule out recessing the hinges?

No, that would have been the better way to go. I never seem to be able to get that to come out right. I think I need to get some crap pieces and practice a little more.
