Man, thank you! This is damn well the most clear, concise and informative video regarding the straight forward instructions on the disconnect / reconnect procedure surrounding vehicle 12v batteries. So many others have tried to do the same and they confuse the topic, they leave out vital information such as the way you demonstrated a 12v battery's potential (or lack thereof) to pass current through a human body. Great video dude. Haven't seen any other vids of yours but I've subscribed, liked & I'll be sure to check out some more of your channel's catalogue of videos.

Thanks! I've always wondered, but never been brash enough to go poking around the car battery. At least now I know what won't hurt. And a good way to remember the order is when you're disconnecting, you're "taking away", or subtracting, which is a negative sign, and when you're connecting, you're adding, so positive first.

This is an excellent description of all the potential risks. Thank you. I would only add that reversing jumper cables or connecting a battery charger up with the cords reversed can potentially blow out part of your cars alternator, specifically the internal switching part, but effectively turning a simple battery replacement into a very expensive repair as alternators are quite expensive in most cars and labour can be equally expensive depending on the location of the component

It is widely understood within mechanic and technical trades that wearing jewelry, especially rings, poses significant risks when working with mechanical systems and electricity. These dangers are extensively highlighted in training programs within these fields. Jewelry presents multiple hazards. Firstly, it can become entangled in machinery, leading to severe injuries such as amputation. Secondly, jewelry, including rings, can conduct electricity and increase the risk of electrocution when in contact with live circuits. Gold rings, in particular, make excellent electrical conductors, potentially exacerbating the severity of electrocution compared to bare skin. Thirdly, in a scenario depicted in this video, a gold ring could become fused between a battery terminal and the wrench, resulting in severe burns and potentially the loss of a finger. Additionally, sparks generated around batteries pose a risk of igniting hydrogen gas explosions.

Thanx! What are the odds that you damage or shorten the battery’s lifespan if you do a quick short-circuit like the one you showed?
@thecarman3693 Жыл бұрын
It's a bad thing to do regardless. All the power is then delivered to the battery's internal resistance, and since a dead short (wrench) will have essentially no resistance of its own the battery can quickly overheat and suffer permanent internal damage to one or more cells.

Love this. Just needed to see it! Is this the same for all types of 12v battery including lithium?
@thecarman3693 Жыл бұрын
Yes ... but keep in mind that different battery types have different internal resistances. Both AGM and Lithium batteries have very low internal resistance compared to lead acid types. That display you saw where he jumped the terminals with a wrench done on an AGM or Lithium battery could have resulted in instantaneous welding of the metal to the terminals, so they must be handled with extreme care. Those batteries can deliver up to 5000 amps upon contact. The benefit of having such a low internal resistance means that almost all the power supplied by the battery is delivered to the load you are putting on the battery, such as the starter. The starter will then get all 12V applied to it, whereas the internal resistance of a lead acid battery's internal resistance can absorb as much as 2V of that 12V, meaning the starter only gets 10V.

I got a big bass system installed in my car and I"m going to be trasnferring all that to another car soon. Question is since I've never done the whole 2nd battery for a bass system before once I remove the bass battery and amp thats in the trunk what do I do with the pos and neg battery wires that are in my trunk that hook up to the amp? It cant be good to have a live red wire with an open end on it and I want to leave the wires there in case I decide to buy another system for that older car so I'm assuming I can cap them somehow but I dont know with what or could I just cover them with electrical tape. If there is no amp pulling juice from them are the wires just dead wires and not dangerous ?
@BudgetMechanicHawaii3 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming they are leads directly from your battery under the hood and no you shouldn’t leave them exposed. I would disconnect them at the battery or at least cap them very securely (not tape!)

I’m no battery scientist but lead acid batteries in car applications do not easily explode. The most dangerous is when sparks or flames ignite the battery offgas that are emitted when charging. So keep fire away from your battery and you’ll be fine

driving without battery? No, it's not safe. I've read somewhere that because the car creates electricity while it's moving, that electricity has to go somewhere (to the battery to recharge it) but because there's no place, the voltage can increase and can fry your electronics. Question! While jumping my car battery today, there were a few large sparks when grounding the last negative to a piece of metal which was probably 20 cm away from the battery (I couldn’t seem to find anything further) and I read that the negative should be grounded at least 30 cm away from the battery. My cables also had a circumferential crack exposing the wire, which I had covered with electrical tape. I’m wondering if either grounding too closely or the exposed wire may be the culprit? I’m also curious to know if sparks are as dangerous as they’re made out to be. With hydrogen gas in the mix, surely a spark could result in a battery exploding? I have a lot of battery anxiety; in fact, I was so hesitant placing the cables today that my partner was furious with me .. 🤣 I’m hoping to learn more and hopefully put my worries at ease, as living in such a cold climate results in frequent battery jumping.
@lhow31003 жыл бұрын
The reason you want to ground your last cable away from the battery is because it will produce sparks and could result in an exploding battery. A battery that has been charging for a while off-gases hydrogen gas (as you mentioned) and can be explosive. The chances of the battery actually exploding are slim, but it is a possibility. Connecting to a bracket on the engine still produce sparks since you are completing the circuit, but it is usually your best bet to avoid anything from happening. 30 cm is plenty of space.
@BudgetMechanicHawaii3 жыл бұрын
Correct. Sparks are normal. Better to have the sparks away from battery if you can
