On November 22, 1997, Caleb Record drives his friend George Place home from basketball practice. The roads in Newfane, Vermont are slick following an early winter ice storm. Caleb fights to control the car but it’s no use, the vehicle flips over three times and lands upside down in the icy West River.

After unbuckling his seat belt and climbing the embankment, heroic George could tell his toes were cold and he was already breathing heavy. By the time he jumped into the warm car, 2 minutes chilly has passed. As Caleb was passed out, dying in the water, George wrapped several blankets around himself asking for a big cup of hot chocolate. It was really scary. His dear friend was starting to suffer brain damage from being unconsious for so long and at the same time, heroic George had tears rolling down his face, as he thought about how dificult it would be to play video games with such cold hands. He would have told the 2 men that his friends was dying in the car, and would have even led them to the accident site but his teeth was chattering so he instead he asked one of them for a warm jacket. In saving his own skin with such panicked desperation from being uncomfortably cold, Geroge showed himself to be a true friend.

The RN was not correct regarding how many minutes someone can be underwater. It depends on the temperature of the water. There are cases where someone has been under icy water for an hour and survived, and a case where a frozen woman was 'dead' for 3 hours after being rescued from an icy lake...so DON'T give up or assume somebody's dead if you pull them out of extremely cold water. A young person has a better chance than a 50-year-old, of course. We have a saying in the medical field. If they're rescued from an icy body of water: 'they aren't dead until they're WARM and dead. For any other situation, 'they aren't dead until they're COLD and dead'. There are RULES for warming up a cold body, so make sure you have medical advice before you start warming while waiting for an ambulance. Blankets and a warm house, or car, are a good start. Now, these results are on the rare side...but, still don't give up!

I'm so very pleased for this young fellow and his parents. Here is another example the adaptation of our body's ability to somewhat 'hibernate' or slow its functioning in extreme cold. The rest is down to being rescued in a timely manner and of course, and not the least, medical intervention. I do not want to downplay how pleased I am for this family but no miracles here. The boy that managed to, in dreadful circumstances, manage to fight the cold to find help, deserves accolades. What a fighter.

Frank Van Rensburg True! I can recall being 17 and deciding I wanted to go out to a friends house. The roads were covered in snow and ice and no one was out on them that late. My mom was out of town and I was an idiot back then. I slid all over the place and ended up just sliding right off the road. My stepdad had to go pull my car out the next morning when I told him what I’d done. I realized the next day in daylight just how close I was to going into a pond. So glad I’m not that dumb anymore and I’ll never allow my girls to be that stupid if I can help it. Sometimes being a more experienced driver also means knowing when not to drive!

I’ve already thought so many times about how I’d want my family to wait at least a few days if they were ever told I was brain dead! These drs want families to make a decision right then! Forget that! One of my kids are ever in this situation and I’m holding on forever! No dr will tell me to give my child’s organs up and pulling the plug unless I’m 110% confident they’d never recover. Just think what if Caleb hadn’t squeezed his mother’s hand! The drs were ready to give up on him. Edit: Although the drs are wonderful so I’m not saying otherwise. I just think they become so accustomed to this kind of thing that they go by the book and each life should be taken as seriously as if it were the drs own children! Also, Gerry and Rodney are heroes as well as the rescue workers and hospital staff! George didn’t do much imo! The dad needed to thank the two men!

Different strokes for different folks just saying I haven't been in a situation where a life was hanging by a thread, and I needed to decide to help or watch I'm 100% sure if its family close friend or an animal I wont think twice That's why there are heroes and losers You and I make really good examples of that 😘 Just joking

Nika Skytopaz being that cold and numb already, looking for help was probably the best thing. Good chance he would’ve gone into shock (which he did in a heated car later anyway) passed out and died before doing anything to help. Plus he would’ve had to cut the seatbelt off and drag him out (which two relatively warm, grown men struggled to do) dude was barley hanging on, that’s an impossible situation to pass judgment on, especially considering how young he was.

@@boxingfan5555 Not always true. People have survived with brain function intact after being submerged in ICY COLD water for even longer than 20 minutes. It is the very cold water that saves them.. quote..."Cold water slows the heartbeat, stops the breathing and redistributes the blood flow toward the organs that need most of the blood and oxygen-the heart, lungs and brain. This is called “the diving response.” Cold reduces the brain's need for oxygen and permits it to survive longer during an airless period." The human body will do everything it can to survive even this seemingly impossible type of circumstance. That being said, without the quick and decisive actions of those who perform CPR without giving up and the medical help, warming the body etc... once they are pulled from the cold water, they would not survive.
