I live in washington. The winter can be unpredicatable. In the past. We may get a few inches of snow or none at all but the recent few years we get nearly a foot amd it sticks around for a week or so. People get stuck on the roads or at work unable to travel due to state or local goverments refusing to salt the roads to save the salmon. (Freshwater fish that go to the ocean) stupid but we are controled by democrats. I keep some basics to get by a few days. And recomend everyone to carry at least 3 days food and water. More is better.

One suggestion, keep a blow out kit and window breaker in the front where you can get to them if you are in a major wreck. Being able to get the bleeding stopped before the jaws of life can extract you may go a long ways at saving your life. Velcroed on the driver side of the gearstick housing is a good place to start. Pretty good Sam, one thing that I would recommend is some form of flashing lights or road flares. If you are a first responder working out of your car that is something you should have. I know that different states have different laws on emergency lights but I would recommend the LED road flares with magnetic mounts that way you can set it on a mode to show that you are a first responder while attending to an roadside accident or to make a scene safer for yourself and others.

I keep my escape hammer/seatbelt cutter in my center console, so I have access to it if I need it for myself. Also keep a small fire extinguisher and a flashlight in there. Food for thought. Keep up the good work dude.

I'm a firefighter in Pennsylvania and I have used one of the hammers before. They are junk and you will actually bend the tip on them before you break a window. For a better window punch just use the spring loaded ones with a separate seat belt cutters. Stay safe.

Great stuff Sam! A written repair manual for your vehicle and some basic tools might just save the day. I had my car not start when going back home from somewhere, and after a bit of reading I had it narrowed down to the starter engine. With the help of a mirror and a flashlight I found that the problem was as simple as the electrical wire was loose and I just had to plug it back in (this area not visible on my vehicle with out a mirror). Saved us a bunch of time and money not having to pay for tow truck or mechanics.

I'm kind of neutral on that point, given how new the vehicle is. I'm not terribly familiar with how Ford is about DIY repairs, but more and more, automakers in general are doing everything they can to force repairs be done in their dealerships or affiliated mechanics. It might be useful, although there might not be much that can actually be done by the non-savvy anymore.

@@TheAttacker732 True, but doing a simple diagnosis of what the probable cause can be could, like in my case, save you a bunch while not more difficult than plugging in a socket to your wall. I do not carry extra belts, plugs, filters and other spares in my vehicle but some extra light bulbs, oil and coolant I do take.

@@ThePreparedNorseman Fair enough. And the spare fluids aren't a bad idea, esp. the motor oil, since it can double for gun oil in a pinch. And I do have to admit, so far, almost all my problems with my '03 have been a hell of a lot bigger than field fixes. Starter completely died away from home, replaced in a parking lot 2 towns over in near 90 degree heat. (Not turning at all, just extending to engage the engine.) Alternator broke after crossing a set of tracks. (It's quite terrifying watching your battery light get dimmer and dimmer while trying to get home at night.) Busted a rear wheel bearing, it might have rusted until it broke open, not really sure the cause. Blew a brake cylinder after hitting a pothole hidden by a downhill corner. After switching to aluminum rims, had lug nuts shake loose and shear 4 of the 5 studs off on my front wheel. And when a shop was working on it for the brake cylinder, they couldn't get it to not kill O2 sensors, replacing it 3 times before giving up on that endeavor. The rear wheel bearing was far and away the simplest fix, being 5 lug nuts and a central nut to remove. And even that was beyond what most would consider a simple toolkit, requiring a torque wrench that could handle 160ft-lbs.

I have never had really big mishaps when out and about with any of my cars, but then again we have some extensive periodic vehicle controls over here that will help identifying more serious problems sooner. But one time i had the exhaust completely fall off an old peugeot i had just bought the same day, cracked of in the weld at the front (had been replaced not long before). Problem was that when they replaced the exhaust they did not replace the attachment rings and they were rusted trough... Some steel wire was the solution.

Hey Sam. Given that you may get a callout in adverse weather, you may want to consider some road flares and a couple of safety triangles in case you get stranded in a blizzard. Getting rear-ended sucks. Another commenter mentioned the quality of your window breaker; your might consider one with a tungsten-carbide tip. A ResQ Tool can mount on your visor. A spring loaded window punch is best, but I find they're easy to misplace. A compact 24 hour survival kit (food/heat/water) might also be good to tuck somewhere. Great vids. Bravo Zulu

Was in the middle of nowhere and it rolled into a corn field (naturally). Luckily, he had cell signal or he would’ve been screwed. Good on you to be prepared for situations like that.

I would recommend a A,B,C Rated Fire extinguisher. It has a little more utility for small vehicle fires, if you see a small brush fire starting etc. Also a Lighter or fire starting kit could be helpful. Also tip even during rain or snow the bottom dead branches of evergreens are still very flammable and very good for starting a fire if you're stranded and need warmth. Also rations would be a Good addition, Jerky/other preserved meat, nut bars, water, pickled vegetables because they are well preserved, and sour dough bread because it lasts a little longer. And canned beans would be good for a fire made meal. Also a large aluminum can or water purification kit would be good too. Obviously alot of stuff but just suggestions. Also Idk your survival/nature training but you can easily add different plants, wild vegetables, and wild roots to the beans for extra nutritional value. Also a tarp for a makeshift shelter would be good.

I dont disagree wholeheartedly with this mindset and or approach, however I feel it may be a bit excessive being as that he isnt gonna be far off the road in any given situation. Im sure if he is out in the bush he will be well prepared for that as well. The fire starter is a definite considering it takes near no space and can help drastically in a cold enivironment. Also as far as food goes there is almost always a gas station or something near by so a bag of beef jerky is more than suffiecient imo. I like the talking points but feel as if it may be a tad over board in this specific situation.

I find food and water are really good to have in your car. Maybe not the water in the winter but definitely some easy to grab bars and snacks. Very very helpful. As well as a tool kit and jumper cables. Can't even tell you how many times I've had to use those out and about.

4:00 during lifeguard training we got car in the water drills, one of the thing taught was that while your vehicle is submerged you cannot break the glass with that hammer (this is only the case when submerged) their are products like RESQME which deploy a small needle that will break the glass no matter if your underwater. just a little gear tip :) love the channel, keep it up

Even if you don't know much about mechanics it is always advisable to keep at least a basic tool kit. You may not know much but someone who stops to help you or who you stop to help may know what to do but not have the tools to do it. I carry stuff in my medic bag that I'm not real familiar with using but in an emergency situation I might run into someone like you who does know. It's just good practice to be prepared.

For those who drive a car with electronic entry trunk - keep your booster cables in the front. If your battery is totally dead and no key hole on trunk, no way to get your booster cables out. I figured that one out at -35C in Northern Quebec 😂

Looking good, I like the setup. I use to have a similar setup, but changed slightly since I am a homeland kind of guy now. I was a combat medic and swat officer so I can relate to your experiences. I just purchased a ford explorer and working on my vehicle EDC kit. I wish there was more side storage options in the rear to save on floor space. I really like that molle panel setup since it is quickly removed as a single unit. I have a suppressed ar pistol I am wanting to mount in my suv for emergencies. Keep up the good work, and the videos, I like them.

Great video. This is quickly becoming one of my new favorite channels. If you're considering being stranded, I would add some basic food items (granola, crackers, beans, etc.), water in a thermos so it doesn't freeze, battery pack for charging electronics, and probably one of those $15 tire puncture kits. Also, if you might use your vehicle for a call-out, why don't you have lights/sirens on your car?

Also I would carry a 1/2 inch breaker bar with socket size that fits your tire. Super easy to get those lug nuts off and I would also carry a small socket set Incase you need to do some little thing in car, like your battery terminal comes loose and need to tighter that, or your oil plug comes loose and need to tighten that out. It helps out with little things in case of emergencies. But keep a breaker bar with a socket size of your lug nuts and some penetration fluid, as all the salt and such fuses the tire to the hub. So having something like WD-40 helps or just keep a hammer and you can use that as wel. Both for tactical and tire changing purposes lol. Also buy a portable battery jump start thing, it amazing. I got these basic things in all of our and our family car and it helps out in emergencies and even we can help someone who is stranded on road as well. And something that I learned from my EMS days is to always keep the hammer and seatbelt cutter with easy to reach area, so it can be used in emergencies even faster.

I'm not a LEO, just had a few experiences that prompted me to get training - a few Red Cross courses along the way, after living in several areas of the US each with its own flavors of disaster - Hurricanes & flooding East coast; Blizzards & Tornadoes in the Midwest (Ohio & Chicago); Earthquakes & forest fires in CA... *I recommend a 12-week course offered by many RC chapters - "Wilderness Emergency Response."* It's based on the premise you might be days or weeks apart from any professional EMS/Hospital/Physician, and trains folks to recognize, assess & respond to basic ABC/first responder situations + reducing fractures & dislocations; heat stroke & hypothermia; trauma, lacerations & wound management; frostbite, diabetes problems, CPR for adults, children & infants; rescue carries & more. Most local Fire Departments also offer training, starting w Community Emergency Response Team training that usually addresses issues & challenges of your locale.

It's funny you have a shovel in your vehicle. My wife and I have 2 vehicles, my truck which is a 2015 Titan and my wife has a 17 Pathfinder. We went to my in laws last weekend, and she looked at me like I had 3 heads when I took the shovel from the toolbox in my truck and put it in her car. Mind you we've lived in Pennsylvania all our lives. I have gotten my old truck stuck because it was 2 wheel drive pulling a car out of a ditch and from that day forward I swore to myself even if it's a 4 wheel drive vehicle I'm never leaving without a shovel. I would suggest a case of water and some protein bars, because like yourself I'm an EMT. I was coming home from work one morning and noticed a vehicle behind me swerving all over the road, until they ultimately hit a concrete median in the center lane of the road. I turned around in a parking lot, got to the vehicle and noticed the driver slumped behind the wheel. Lucky for me, this person was wearing a medical bracelet, which said they were a type 1 diabetic. Being myself diabetic, I took a glucometer reading and found he was dangerously low. I got him coherent enough to be able to get him to eat something, but all I had was a cliff bar to give him. Once he ate it, EMS was on scene and they got him taken care of.

Great video. I have never been a fan of emergency hammers since you will never now in what position your caught in and if you will be able to swing the hammer hard enough to break a car window. I prefer to have a "Resqme" on my keychain and one in every door pocket. It has a seat belt cutter and spring mounted window breaking end all in one little package. You never know which passenger in your car might need it.

Thus is just one persons view but I'd rather have a portable jumpstarter than jumper cables. I've had quite a few dead batteries over the last year and even in well populated areas its really difficult to find someone willing to help and this is even more important in the middle of nowhere. Also they are very affordable now like wal mart for under 100 bucks and you can charge them in the vehicle. Don't rely on roadside assistance you only get a few per year and they can take hours sometimes to get to you. My take is try to be as self contained as possible. Look for as many ways to reduce your dependency on others for common problems and you'll be ok.

In deep winter conditions portable jump starters are much less effective. In the one time I had occasion to use it, my fully charged good quality charger gave me exactly two attempts before it went dead. I had to rely on my cables to get the vehicle started. Lesson learned.

If you get a high quality one it should work just keep it inside the vehicle and at night take it inside so it's not exposed to harsh elements. Plus they make small ones now like the size of a portable phone charger. Anyways nothing is 100% but I'd much rather have this instead of just jumper cables.

Great video. I'm trying to figure out how to set up a new car myself properly, love your other videos too. This "snow" thing is so weird (I live in San Juan, PR; coldest it gets is probably 20C; moved from Seattle area where we did have snow, and mountains. So much easier without it.). One thing I might add to your car is a lithium ion battery jumper. They're $30-80 at Costco or Amazon, and can usually jump a car without cables. It's not actually great to use your car as a donor vehicle in the jumper cable setup if you have a lot of electronics, and being able to hand someone a little pack to do it can be safer for other reasons as well. They just plug into the 12v port ("cigarette lighter") -- doesn't work if the battery is totally dead, but does work in marginal cases. I've personally never liked the rescue hammers for self-rescue, since you might need to deploy it from upside down or in some other compromised position where you can't get a good swing. I tend to rely on the spring loaded punches for self rescue (and wherever possible). They are $5-10 and I got mine from the sig sauer pro shop after a class on shooting in/around/into cars. Cellphone chargers + precharged usb batteries have saved me a lot, too, along with water. I've stopped for disabled vehicles/car accidents/etc. (much more willing to do this while CCWing, and in rural/remote places where actual response is going to be a lot slower), and often giving them some water/snack/etc. and letting them charge a phone while waiting calms people down a lot. Or for regular "someone else is riding in my car and needs to charge a phone".

I’m i Utah and I got a pickup and I have a big toolbox in my truck bed I have a roadside kit you buy a costs or Walmart that’s got some stuff for roadside emergencies and first aid but I could probably use a better one and I got a bottle jack and a hi lift jack and a tow strap and fuel jug Incase I run out two sets of jumper cables , tie downs for when I haul stuff and a sledgehammer Incase I need it and lien 3 or 4 road flares and a tow chain and a big fire extinguisher and tools and some other stuff and in the cab I got a hi vise jacket I usually keep in there and down blankets and a spare sweatshirt and a brush and ice scraper combo thing idk what you call that and a second fire extinguisher and my ch radio so o can hear what’s happening up a head when I can’t get traffic off the radio when I scan get a radio single and a knife to cut my seat build Incase if a roll over and I think that’s it I might have some more stuff and I want to care a gun in my truck and I been thinking ether a shot gun or a ar rifle or something and storing it behind my back set is that a good idea ?

A recommendation if you get sick of removing it over night, or havent already. Black out the complete rear of the vechicle, I do store alot of tools over night in my vechicle, i have often left stuff on the back seat and forgotten about it till I opened the back door the next morning, have tried looking in even with a tourch at night(to simulate what a theif would do) you can not see in to the rear of my car, it might be an idea.

There are better shovel options and maybe some traction pads. Food and water. Additional light and heat source. I live in Canada so we know winter where I live. You seem to be prepared for work not for yourself. Just remember you cant save anyone if you become the casualty. Look at the rules of 3 for survival. Otherwise great videos.

I would also recommend to tape your license plate over next time, as we can clearly see what it says. Blurring doesn’t really do a good job, so just taping a piece of cardboard would work amazingly well

Just subbed to your channel and find the content you put out really interesting. I've heard that in general most EMS personal can't go into an active shooter situation to help victims until the scene is secure, but as a swat medic I'm sure your protocol is different. Is your s.o.p to clear the situation with the team or immediately administer aid once you came upon a wounded person while everyone else presses on? Keep up the good work.

A basic toolkit from AutoZone or the like comes in handy beyond just car repairs. I carry some power bars and bottles of water; also heard of people carrying a quart of oil, though I've never done so myself.
