Car Fuel System Lacquer Thinner 30 Day Test Video

This video is the conclusion of a test that was performed to see if there would be negative effects on fuel system rubber components from lacquer thinner. The results were surprising. Two types of o-rings were tested, generic and name brand gasoline. The generic seemed to fair better than the name brand but both were negatively effected.

Yes, a gallon is what people normally put in but I used two gallons on one of my cars to see if it would hurt anything. I ran the tank all the way out and had no problems.

you should do 1 to 5 gas/ thinner test tube ratio for 30 days to see what would happen to add to your theory that o rings would not be affected

In airless sprayers which may be exposed to lacquer thinner and other chemicals for prolonged periods they use leather in place of O rings and nylon every else (bushings etc...)

@@TheStanleyWay Well what am I missing? The injectors wouldn't have o-rings on them when installed so they wouldn't come in contact with thinners.

@@Paul-hn1wo if you use lacquer thinner in the gas tank and run it through the system, the gasoline lacquer thinner will come in contact with the o-rings.

My daughter's 2015 Honda Fit (88,800 mi.) had the CEL come on and it was throwing a P0420 code, so I added one gallon of lacquer thinner to ten gallons of gas and drove the car on the highway at 80mph for about three hours, and that CEL went off. It looks like many people are recommending a 1 to 5 ratio on LT to gas. I'm planning to do the same with my my 2011 Honda Odyssey now that I've deleted the VCM. (12/14/22)

I had 10:1 gas to LT sitting in my tank for 48 hours. Though the CEL went out, I realized that long term exposure to LT could melt plastics (ie. Fuel pump) and rubber seals.

@@slacker_DIY Yes, LT has a lot of acetone in it which will eat rubber and plastic. I forgot to mention it above, but after driving 150 miles I did fill up with fresh gas to dilute the LT even further and minimize damage.

You have to take in mind you would have to have the tinner in your seals in thinner substantial amount of time

I'm having Cat problems w/my F-150, 0420, going to give the lacquer thinner a go. Another guy showed running the car at high RPM 4000 by staying in a lower gear. Also I look at mine with one of the Temp. guns doodads, aim it at whatever and get a tempurture reading. Aimed at the front on my Cat alway much hotter at the front, where-as it should be hotter [much hotter] at the rear of the cat. You do a good job I've enjoyed watching, liked/subbed/bell notification and I think will qualify as a comment - laf.

OEM will typically use the cheapest compatable materials! 1st one, was Nitril. Is ok for Gasoline and sub par for Laq. 2nd one, was Viton and good for Gas but not at all for Laq. So with that you see the results of your test! As you said, since the "diluted" Laq and Gas mix isn't in the system for very long, it likely has little to no affect on the O-rings. If you want to replace all the O-rings in the fuel delivery system, then replace with Teflon and your good! Suggest Stanley buy and test a few Teflon O-rings

Some people use Shop Solvent to pass the emissions tests. They put a gallon to a half a tank of gasoline. Why don't you do a half gas half shop solvent experiment or a gas verses shop solvent?

Thanks for the video. How many people have you heard recommend cataclean over the thinner? I was going to try cataclyn first it's more expensive but I also want to know how many people say don't use lacquer thinner thank you

It has only been a handful of people and never anybody with any proof. When I released my first lacquer thinner video is when the hate started. There have been way more people using lacquer thinner successfully versus people that say it is bad. As a matter of fact, I have yet to have anyone say that lacquer thinner actually harmed their vehicle, it has all been speculation.

Thank you. Cataclean is apparently the same stuff that is in lacquer thinner for the most part as I recall someone said. Now I just got to find pure lacquer thinner like Scotty said. Someone else said some lacquer thinner has other junk in there that you don't want

@@goshgolly8305 I have also heard that the best lacquer thinner is usually supplied at paint specific stores and you might want to ask for “old school” thinner. And yes, Cataclean is very similar but way more expensive.

Not sure what this video proves? A more useful test would be 9 parts gas and 1 part thinner and store fuel injector O-rings in it for 24 hours. That would be a real world test that would prove if doing this cat clean hack would damage your car.

I once used lacquer thinner 500ml mixed with half filled petrol tank and fuel pump of honda civic 2005 became defective. Since that day I never used it.

Just simply remove the air fuel ratio O2 sensors and spray or pour the lacquer thinner directly into the cat let cold soak overnight then return put the O2 sensors back in and drive

by your own admission and stated goal this test was kinda of a waste of time, you yourself stated that no one is going to use straight LT. with an average half tank of gas in modern cars being approximately 8 gallons, 1 gallon of LT constitutes about 12% or a ratio of 3.25. Had the test had used gasoline that was diluted with 12% LT and done in a way that would simulate limited o-ring exposure like that in an engine instead of direct full time soaking the test could have been extremely relevant..........

Kalifornia Klean Strip formula : PROPANONE and GLYCOL ETHERS. 49 State formula :ACETONE,ETHYL ACETATE,METHANOL,PETROLEUM DISTILLATES and TOLUENE.I would be careful about using this in California. Maybe Scotty or another Car Tuber could test this? I"m in California

You put the lacquer thinner in with a half a tank of gas and then drive it immediately for 150 miles (road trip) or what I did I ran it until the gas light came on (only a gallon or so left in the tank) then you fill the tank with premium gas and drive it home and continue driving as normal. So basically you are running gas diluted with lacquer thinner for only a half a tank of gas. You are soaking O-Rings for an extended period of time making your little experiment We-Tawded and not scientific in the least when compared to running lacquer thinner through your car. That's All!
