I have a car that has almost 180,000 miles. I have a bigger issues with the dents and fading clear coat! It's 18 years old and the mileage makes sense. I don't see an issue with high mileage. It all comes down to how well it was cared for.

Depends on the car. A civic is just broken in at 200k where as a Grand Caravan becomes scrap metal by 80k btw that Toyota probably had it's miles rolled back XD

That’s true too but it also depends on the brand and the year that’s what people should look at , sometimes it works both ways . Sometimes high mileage for a 1994 car is good and sometimes a 2015 car with high mileage is bad .

Absolutely! People are so blind and brainwashed to believing once a car's mileage hits 6 digits that it automatically is shit. I've heard many horror stories about people buying a 10-15 year old car with 50k miles. Yeah they have low mileage, but everything begins to break. Cars are meant to be DRIVEN!! Good stuff, always loved your vids keep it up man!

I bought a CPO'd 2009 BMW in 2012. It had 29k miles on it. A few months later my job moved me to double my normal miles away from home. I have personally kept up on all of my maintenance, fixed any scratches and dings, kept the interior buffed to a high luster, etc. I just hit 110k miles. If you see it sitting there and drive it, you would think its only a 29k mile car still. It's a 335i twin turbo beast. I totally agree with you. And...my miles are 90% freeway out here in So Cal. Most of the time its just rolling along and not stressing.

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt with 126,000 miles, and it still runs like a dream. Cars nowadays are better built and last longer with proper maintenance. I have my car serviced at Jiffy Lube every 3000 miles, and changing the oil is the key to longer life. Change the belts and hoses too, and your car will still last. My car is now 11 years old, and still looks almost new (except for cosmetic damage to the rear bumper in the lower left corner). I will drive my car until it quits.

All i did was replace a side mirror ($40) and drain/refill the coolant($25). 9 months and 5000 miles later, it has given me no problems, no shake, no rattles. I keep my 14' Grand Cherokee in excellent condition as far as the exterior and interior. When my friend got in recently, after a few years not seeing him, he couldn't believe that the interior looked the same as when he sat in it when I got it new. I keep up on maintenance religiously, but I do not baby it since I do need to stay out of people's way. But the thing my friend said when he got in was "It's going to be weird when this thing looks pristine and starts having mechanical problems down the road." But that's why I keep it in check. If my engine goes, or if I need a new tranny, it may look like a solid option if the vehicle is otherwise mint. If I had let it go, and allowed the interior to get gross and such, I'd probably take it for granted. I think what is also very important is the suspension and the brakes. Replacing the suspension at a certain point brings the cars solid feel back. I think mileage does play a factor, but more so on vehicles like my Jeep. It's the anxiety of "huh, 105,876 miles on this thing. Can I make it to Cali from NY in this?" I'm at 42,000 miles now and I've already been a bit worried. When is something going to go wrong? Dun dun. If I had a Subaru Forester I don't think I'd really need to worry much.

I had a 1997 Plymouth Neon sport with the 2.0 DOHC 4 cylinder engine and 4 speed automatic transmission and I bought it with 120k miles on it for $2k. When I got done with it, it had 345k miles. Only had to replace tires, brakes, valve cover gaskets, fuel filler neck because it had a hole in it, O2 sensors and changed the transmission fluid a few times. That car was amazing. Now I traded it a 2015 Ford Fiesta 4 cylinder with 150k miles on it because the transmission was slipping and the car was a rental before I got it and it’s value was less than the cost of repairs. I take great care of any car I own but sometimes the damage is already done. I traded it for a brand new 2019 Honda Civic Touring sedan that I have been wanting to get since they redesigned them in 2016. But if I had to, I’d gladly own another high mileage vehicle as long as it was well cared for.

Lower miles means less repairs. I've had my 2009 Impala 2 years now and never had to put in work. Just regular maintenance and tires. Bought it at 37k miles and now I'm at 52k miles. I'm planning to keep it at least 5 to 10 years more. Compared to my 2002 civic which had 130k miles when i bought it. Had so much leaks and engine problems. I almost went flat broke with repairs. Then compared to my 05 Civic hybrid i had for 2 years till i was rear ended. Would never get a hybrid again. But that car had 47k miles when i bought it and waa a little over 60k when i had to take the total loss. All those 2 years i never had any repairs. Only maintenance and little sensors replaced. Nothing major. So yes mileage matters

More mileage means more repairs. It may not be junk but it'll need more tlc compared to lower mileage. It can even sometimes be a gamble in general. Just have it inspected by a professional. I'd rather pay more for old car with low miles vs new car with high miles

People don't take care of their cars. They always buy the max amount they can finance, and end up with payments so high that that can't afford to put decent tires on their cars. This video makes a great point. Buy something you can afford, and take care of it! I've seen some very poorly maintained cars with under 50k, and the customers always cheap out when fixing their cars. Taking care includes cleaning it too.

Indeed, the reason most feel people have this outlook on caring for cars is leasing. Everything is a rental so why care. I have to say being in the business I am the same way. I would always sell a car after 10,000 miles. ( I still clean my rentals though.)

You are so right!! People who put all their weight in a car's mileage are complete idiots. However the majority of the public is brainwashed to think that way! And this results in mileage given the most weight in the appraisal of a car's value! To the smart buyer, this can actually be a good thing. Of course, the key is to be a bit of a detective and see *who the car belonged to and how it was driven* - A fairly recent model vehicle with high miles is likely to be driven more on the highway than the city, and could be a steal if the proper due diligence is done to both check the cars history thoroughly, as well as look for the telltale signs that the car was mostly driven on the highway. Of course, a car with 30,000 miles driven *EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, UNDER THE EXACT SAME CONDITIONS, IN THE SAME LOCATIONS AND OF SIMILAR AGE as one with say 80,000 miles* will have less wear and tear than the higher mileage car. But this is almost never true. Rule of thumb says 1 city mile puts as much wear and tear as 5 highway miles!! Meaning a car with 30,000 miles that was *only* driven in the city would have about the same wear and tear as one with 150,000 miles driven exclusively on the highway. Of course this cannot be entirely true, because one can't simply "place" the car on the freeway and drive. So the number would be somewhere in between. I would say something like 30000 miles equivalent to 90,000 - 100,000 miles. Of course this assumes both cars are roughly the same age. Besides this, most wear on engines occurs during cold start up. Age plays a significant role too. Many people don't realize this. Rubber parts including belts and pipes will be severely affected as time passes, and metal fatigue will also play a role as cars get very old. And finally, the geographical location where the car has been driven is extremely important too, as the author correctly points out!

200k miles isn't even a benchmark anymore. Easily, EASILY do able with just about any modern vehicle (it's not 1960 when at 50k you were looking at a minimum of a valve job, etc.) The only killer of automobiles is neglect, & the garbage our legislators said was OK to throw on the roads that absolutely, positively rots the ass off a car in the winter months. New England cars are 99.9% of the time pretty much toast after a few years because of corrosion, while the drive trains are hardly at the halfway mark.

Personally I would not buy a car with such high mileage because those big repairs might be just around the corner. The reason for low prices at high mileage is precisely that risk. My strategy is to buy at low mileage (15000-30000) and then drive them until they get problems (meanwhile maintaining them well).

I do agree that a car can have too many miles especially if the owner puts more money in it than it's worth but how you maintain the car is key. About the 2nd point you made I used to disagree but as time went on you're 100% right. You have to look at it in a different point of view. Society in general believe the newer, the fewer used = attractive and the old and most used, = less attractive. It's not only in cars but in many other products people own in life. In terms of cars, many people assume higher mileage means wear and tear and higher cost for maintenance. Plus nowadays just like smart phones, people want the up to date tech benefits from newer vehicles.

totally agree with you and it's coming from a Ford master mechanic. I've been driving a 97 rav4 with 362000km for the last 3 years and have a total of 800 Canadian dollars into it.the only major repair I did was the timing belt only because I didn't know when it was last replaced. sometimes a low mileage engine has even more wear than a high mileage vehicle because it never gets up to operating temperature because some grandma only drives to church and back

I’m seeing posts of cars about 15 years old and priced as if it’s just 5 years old just because of its low mileage. When you look at the car, it looks crappy because it was sitting in the garage for a long time, rusting and having many parts deteriorated. So generally I don’t care about high mileage as well. When you test drive the car and examine it physically, you will know if the car is being taken care of or being neglected.

If the car doesn't have a maintenance record, i won't buy it regardless of mileage. While it's definitely true that low mileage cars could be junk you can't really trust high mileage vehicles either. The best method is if you are going to buy used, check the car over. If you are not a mechanic get a mechanic to look at it. Otherwise buy new or from a reputable dealer that won't sell you a pos vehicle.

I went out of town when my car was being serviced and they loaned me a 2015 Avalon....No thank you! Doesn't ride the same. If you get a car in decent shape...Take care of it and it will take care of you....Especially Lexus/Toyota and Honda. In that order.

It's not so much as high mileage means it's crap. But it's the price. I rather pay a little more for an older car with low miles vs a newer car with high miles. The more miles you have, the more work you gotta put in to have it running. I noticed that once a car hits 60k to 100k miles you're gonna need to break out your wallet to keep it running. Ofc it'll run but it'll only run if you keep up with the repairs. The low mileage cars don't necessarily need repairs. Nothing major at least. My first low mileage car (hybrid civic) never needed repairs and i had it for over 2 years until it got totaled from a rear end hit. I now have a 2009 Impala with 52k miles after 2 years. No repairs as of yet and almost done paying it off. It runs like a champ

In general I agree with what you are saying. But 200k is a lot of miles though unless you can talk to the owner who put the miles on to see did he maintain it? One thing that is so key especially around the city is highway miles. I would take high highway miles over a low mileage city car any day.

Original engine, of course it has need things replaced like the turbo, and heater core. The rest is pretty much regular maintenance. It still drives amazing. Our others are an A6 3.0t Avant and A8 4.2, both which have just over 150,000 miles (~240,000km). It’s luck, maintenance. And ALL cars break down from something, they are after all machines. There are two types of car people. No, I'm not talking about muscle vs imports LOL. I'm talking about the the people who see a car as a long term investment and treat it like a family member. I tend to like these type of people. They are loyal and know the value of a hard earned dollar. The other type of car people see a car as a tool or status symbol. I tend to not like these type of people. They will take you for granted just like their car and when problems/maintenance comes up, they will just throw you away and go onto the next friend/car.

This is true. There are people who apparently view owning a car as a one-time investment. Pay whatever for it, and then never, ever maintain or fix anything. Sell it for nothing a few years later, because everything is wrong with it and it's no longer worth repairing. Buy another, repeat. It never made sense to me either!

I agree and understand 100%. My neighbor bought a used car with 80,000 miles and thought it was gonna be good because of the 'LOW miles' and it turned out to be the biggest piece of shit and has soooo many problems because the previous owner never did maintenance. Meanwhile he had the chance to get his buddy's car with 125,000 miles where the maintenance was kept up with to a T but he passed because 125k was too high. Well that 125k car now has 170k and is still running beautifully haha and the 80k mile car is long gone. Just goes to show....

Your right that's what i tell people doesn't matter if car has low mileage that didn't mean car is much better then a high mileage car unless the car is in great condition with no any major problems it's good for maybe another hundred or thousand of miles so people when we trade or sell cars with mileage around 140k 160k it don't mean cars is in it's last stage it might run more miles then a car with maybe only 40k or 60k mile car so please stop scrapping or selling your high mileage cars keep them they can break a record if you keep them clean and maintained. And old cars were made to last at least 500k miles or even more then newer cars just last till 200k miles depending in condition and also new cars break down more often the older cars.

I sold cars and I know what to look for if well maintained absolutely would choose the Acura miles aren't everything but they are something to consider because the cost of maintenance is always higher on high mile cars I had a 2000 Infiniti I30 Clean leather interior absolutely gorgeous but the cost to service a car like that with 167K miles is an expensive car to maintain I paid 4k and it just kept adding up so again it depends on a number of factors don't ever buy from a lemon lot bring a Machanic with you careful inspection and test drive ask to have it inspected if everything checks out then purchase it.

I love this video. While I personally wouldnt buy a USED car with 'HIGH mileage' on it, high mileage on ALL used cars is why I keep my 'old car' now. LOW miles and it looks brand new, at 12 years!! I dont trust the other owner/owners of any used car. Unless it looks like that Acura...at least it was loved, in and out. THAT Corolla proves what is said here. I would have loved to have had that Corolla, when NEW, it would have 6K miles on it NOW, not a ding or scratch on it, and it would have that Toyota reliablity! BUT that one is a piece of crap! IF it was taken care of on the OUTSIDE, then it was taken care of Mechanically. BUT the fact it looks like that, shows the owner just needed a cheap 'reliable' car, and didnt care about it, after 2-3 years. That Acura with those miles on it, was taken care of mechanically ALL the time. You can tell just from the condition of the vehicle. And the fact Acura has great engines. If it looks like THAT, it has been taken care of mechanically. The owner was probably older, has money, but isnt wasteful, and traded it in on a new Acura for some reason, but that Acura has some style left to it. Not like NEW Acuras, they all look the same.
