@Nordestada no. Your contract is in writing with your insurance company. It says they owe the lesser of repairs or ACV of your vehicle. You have no say in that due to your contract. I am retired now, but when I was watching this video I had flashbacks of when my father and I ran a part-time autobody repair shop together and also when I worked as an autobody repairman at a dealership. I have had many good experiences with my customers as well as insurance adjusters. Once, my own car was rear ended, and after taking it home I called my insurance company and an adjuster arrived a day or two later. I wrote an estimate before he arrived and when he saw it he did a walk around and added some extra money to my estimate to cover the damage to the exhaust system that was due for replacement anyhow. I showed him the new exhaust parts that I had bought at a dealership the same day as the accident and didn't expect to get paid for them, but he insisted that it be added to the estimate, which I appreciated. Several times I had issues with insurance companies that wanted me to install used parts on a relatively new car. Where I lived I would have to drive two hours just to pick up the parts and bring them home. Also, often used body parts were not in perfect shape and extra time was required in order to repair dents and scratches. After a bit of push back I most always was able to convince the adjuster to approve new parts. In those days it was common for people to damage the chrome bumpers on their cars which required a bumper cover replacement. Often, insurance companies would only approve a re-chromed bumper. Such bumpers often had obvious imperfections, and if it was for a good customer, I would install a new bumper for the price of the re-chrome. The re-chrome bumpers didn't last longer than a year without peeling, so I didn't want to make my customer upset by installing such parts on his or her vehicle. The difference in cost was minimal, so my cost for the bumper was essentially the same as the re-chrome. It seems that times have changed, but people remain the same :-).

I took my son's car for repairs after a minor accident and the shop inflated the cost, thus the car was "totaled". They took all the parts off the car and put them in the back. They were refusing to put it back together as we wanted to keep the car. My insurance agent had to get involved. They ultimately put it back together and I had it fixed somewhere else with no issues and half the cost. Both shops and insurance companies can be unethical. Glad to know their are still some ethics left like you! Thank you!

There are tow truck companies charging $500 for a 5-mile tow, or fake clean up times, longer miles than actual, etc. Im not defending insurance companies but repair shops are just as shady. At the end of the day, we, the consumer, have to be vigilant because there are many, many people trying to separate us from our money, and the more they get they more succesful they feel. My cousin sells insurance. It’s insane how fucked up it is. Fun fact, insurance agents get a commission every time you renew your policy. Let’s say I sell you insurance for your car and house and it ends up being 3k a year. I would get a percentage of that, where my cousin works it’s 10%, so $300 for making the sale. Then every year you renew for the rest of the policy’s life a percentage of that will go to me. Depending on the policy it can vary, but renewals can be about 5% of the premium cost. When premiums go up, your insurance agent just made more money. There’s insurance agents literally making 10k+ a month off of premium renewals. Crazy that that’s allowed. Bought a Sienna new in 2019 XLT AWD, put on 46,000 miles, garage kept. My wife was t-boned by an Ionic trying to beat a light in a 45mph zone. Without looking at the van their company totaled it saying that the air bags went off so it's totaled and our company agreed! The other damage would have totaled it as well. It was paid off too. We had hoped to replace it with another Sienna V6 XLT AWD but the money was less than what we could get another for. Getting a Sienna is difficult anyway but we had to settle on a slightly newer 2021 Highlander with same mileage. We like the Highlander and it has the V6 we like but I am 100% DAV and I have a walker that only fits in the back whereas it fit in the side door with seat removed in the van. One should expect full replacement value. BTW my wife is feeling better after many weeks of vertigo and balance issues. We feel robbed of our choice and of our needed vehicle.

Had to argue with them about rental on the car I drive the most. Due to age of my cars, they’ll mark em as totaled. Still need a rental due to where I live and where I have to travel for work. Have you tried shopping around to see if you can get cheaper insurance? The company my family recently dumped started jacking up our rates because they had stopped writing policies in my state and wanted to get out entirely. You could also see if you can eliminate certain parts of your coverage. For example, my car is so cheap/old that comp and collision is pointless because I would end up paying more into it than the car is worth. Another option is to get a tracking program such as State Farm's Drive Safe & Save. As a last resort you could reduce your overall coverage (e.g. from 100k/300k to 50k/100k), but with how expensive car repairs and medical bills have become I wouldn't recommend it.

Another good and truthful video, thank you. I was in the automotive repair industry for 42 years, retired now. 32 of those as an ASE certified shop in the Bay Area of California. I agree, dealing with insurance and extended warranty. Companies is not worth it. Not only will they lowball the labor times, include non-OEM or used parts. They will use the average labor rate for the country. At the time ( this was years ago) my shop labor rate was $35.00 dollars per hour. My technicians labor ranged from $20.00 per hour to $25.00 per hour depending on skill level. Your insurance rates will vary upon the areas you live in, so should the adjusters estimate vary. 15.00 dollars an hour from Idaho would not pay one of my technicians. No less my rent, power, insurance, environmental fees, licensing, etc. After only a couple years, I quit dealing with insurance and warranty companies also, they’re not worth your time. What I would tell my good customers is “ I’m more than willing to fix your car, and you know it will be done right. But you will pay me, if want then you can submit the claim to the insurance company and see if they will help.”

Reminds me of medical insurance. The good doctors are not fully covered by insurance, so go to a lesser doctor who accepts insurance or go to the good doctor and the customer covers the difference. Maybe offer this option to your customers: The insurance offered this, I think the repair will cost this, are you willing to pay the difference? The alternative is they have to go to a shop that will cut corners. I understand your argument based on principle, but sometimes the car just needs fixed and people have other hills to die on.

I remember State Farm trying to get money out of me for a deductible when it was unwarranted. When I got the call, it was obvious that they barely had any information on what happened. All that happened was I was driving to work at around 1am, go down a main road I always take, had to swerve abruptly to avoid hitting a Buck, car ends up doing a 180 and goes into the ditch into an open unowned field. I come to a stop, front end is facing the street, look around the car, no damage, problem is the ditch is so steep, car is an 08 prix, so I dont have the kind of tires or drive train to get out. So, all I need is a tow, ask for the service through the app, get a tow truck on the way, while they're on the way, I get someone from work to pick me up to take me to the warehouse cause I have a job to do. On the phone with the tow truck guy, tell him where the cars at, told him what happened, and that the keys are in the car, have him tow it to my works parking lot and that was it. State Farm calls a day or two later, they're like, we're going to need the deductible now. My response is, "For what? There was no damage, there was no damage to the car, and there was no damage to anybodies property, I was simply stuck!" They're like oh, ok. And that was it. Talk about jumping the gun there. They obviously had very little to no information on what happened and were expecting me to pay $500 deductible for a maybe $200-$300 tow. I have the tow service add on in my premium, you guys already got paid for that. Fortunately, there were no were no further issues or discussions after that, but man did I find the whole thing odd.

That’s the part of the business that’s missed. People don’t understand how overworked and understaffed most claims departments are. They deal with nothing but the worst calls everyday and turnover is insane so there’s always new people being trained. Let’s be honest, the automotive industry is not known to be the most ethical. They cheat their customers as sport. As an insurance company, we have to deal with a lot of fraud and sometimes the poor reputations of mechanics and dealers makes our interaction with them cautious and to trust but verify. Ultimately, if we just cut checks Willy Nilly, the claims cost would exceed revenues and we’re out of business so it’s a two way street. Take a look at the results of all personal lines auto insurers excluding Progressive. They are getting destroyed. Especially State Farm and Allstate.

Indeed sounds like State Farm. I don’t have State Farm. But the lady driving a Nissan Rogue that made an unsafe lane change into my dedicated on-ramp lane, she has State Farm. I was dealing with: The lady herself flat out lied to the officer arriving on scene, saying she never changed lane. My dashcam had a faulty wifi and couldn’t transfer the video footage to my phone - so I couldn’t show the footage to the officer on the spot. Result = no tickets issued. Then after I filed insurance claim on her State Farm, the Adjustor could not get a hold of their customer on the phone. (The lady intentionally was not returning their calls.) 5 weeks after I filed the claim, State Farm officially closed the claim, denied. On what basis? They couldn’t get a hold of their customer to “get their story on what happened”, despite I’ve sent them the dash cam video when I filed the claim. So then I file claim with my own insurance, and providing the same video footage. My insurance company covered the repair, and is now in process of getting reimbursement from both State Farm and the other driver. Just insane.

Progressive was the worst to work with and State Farm was a close second. They will nickel and dime the shop on everything. They will try to get you to use aftermarket, at the time Taiwan, probably Chinese now, components instead of OE parts. They will try to dictate how many shop supplies you use.
