Almost happened to me. My phone detected an airtag and I was able to trace its origin to the gas station I had just left. Guy was in a car beside me acting suspicious. The tag fell off before I could find it. Police were clueless. I immediately put my fob in a Yeti cup which blocks the signal. A few days later, that guy drove by my house and I chased him. He got away but hasn’t returned. The day it was tagged, 15 cars were stolen in a neighboring town using the signal boost method. They target you at gas stations because they know you have enough fuel to get to a drop off point since they can’t restart the vehicle. If you're mechanically inclined, there are many things you can do to prevent a car from being started even with your own key fob, but still be able to get in and get it started quickly if you know about it. Things like kill switches, removing certain fuses, and on a more extreme level removing parts like ignition coil packs. It all depends on how long you let your car sit. Thieves may carry fuses with them, and they're certainly aware of kill switches, but it will buy you some time while they figure it out.

There are measures that can be taken make you aware and slow down the attempt. 1. Place a motion detection camera that works off of cellular data in your vehicle one that has great night vision. That way you are alerted on your mobile device of any movement around your car and can speak through the camera if needed from your phone. Once the camera detects motion it will alert you and automatically start recording. This give you time to call the cops. 2. Faraday bags for the fob 3. Buy Carlock security device. Ivest in the Carlock sensors as well and place them on every door. Carlock plugs into the car and will alert you if your car doors are touched or if it senses any vibration or movement it will also GPS track your vehicle in realtime and alert you via cell phone if your engine started. 3. Oh. If your car does not have an alarm get a loud one installed. I say loud because anything over the standard 120 db will surely make the theives run 4. If you can isntall bright flood lights that activate once a person walks up to the door of your vehicle if its in the driveway. You can change the distance sensitivity. To prevent theft install a killswitch.

You need a Faraday box or bag or pouch. Don't rely on just a metal box. Before you do trust a metal box put the key fob in it and take that out to your vehicle in the box. See if the doors will lock or unlock. See if you can start it. If it responded to that fob at all that box is no good! Also be careful when you use something to block the signal since if your key is inside that and you leave it in the vehicle you could lock it in. Normally you can't lock a working fob for your vehicle in accidentally. Just make sure you have your second one ready somewhere you can easily find it just in case you do lock it in accidentally.

handy at least on toyotas. if you hold lock and hit unlock twice on the fob it turns it off, so the signal can't be picked up. there's other ways to still get a car but it'd take way longer without the fob signal.

GEEEZ! Always looking for complicated answers to simple problems. MANUFACTURERS, LISTEN UP! JUST PUT A SIMPLE ON/OFF SWITH ON THE KEY FOB!!! DUH! Whether it's in your house, hand purse,pocket, or wherever you can disable it, and nothing else is needed. The battery will last longer, too. How the hell did nobody think of this?
@tid4182 ай бұрын
They do, at least for some manufacturers. If you're going to do that, though, why not just go back to the old system that is not continuously broadcasting the unlock code just waiting to be brought into close range?
@nickwilliams48542 ай бұрын
@tid418 That's certainly an option, but it doesn't work with push-button starting. Right now, it's get a Faraday box, put the remote far away, etc. Why bother with all of that when you could just shut the remote off?

Hondas have always been a favorite of car thieves. Those clubs won't even slow a professional thief. Many cars steering wheels flex enough and the wheel lock can be slipped off. A can of freon will freeze the club lock and a tap will shatter the lock. All that fails and a bolt cutter can just cut the steering wheel.

I just have regular old fashion key and this should be a option for all new cars. I bought RIFD blocking sleeves years ago, sized for credit cards and passports. I would check the passport size to see if it blocked signal, use two to close both openings of card cover. All technology isn't good, people just foister this stuff on us to make money even when it does more harm than good!

You should always keep your keys shielded, even when shopping, at a restaurant or otherwise away from home. If for no other reason than that a keyfob at the edge of its range can quickly run down your battery in an attempt to gain full communication with it. Plus,of course, a thief can get in with a signal booster. Not sure if they can actually start and drive it with one...

My 2016 kia optima was broken into last September in Detroit, around Rosedale park and they couldn’t break the steering column as it is a push to start model. The thief left the screwdriver and I submitted it to Detroit police, they popped my rear driver side window, since I have tints all the way around it didnt make a noise, but they also soo try this method to pop the trunk or rear pull down, which was crazy as my laptop was in the back seat they didn’t even steal that. I learned n bought a farraday box.

I have a 2010 Lexus LS 460 that usually let you touch the car and it unlocks the doors for you. I turn this feature off and now I have to put my key right in front of the push button in order to get it to start and it's supposed to block and stop this from happening and I believe just about every manufacturer has this option available to block you just have to know where to find it within your car's computers
@jmackinjersey1Ай бұрын
Those key fob controllers should have a finger print or some other biometric security feature, or even a code, like a cell phone does, where it times out after 30 seconds and you need to enter the security barrier in order for it to operate. You know, something simple to stop thieves from being able to use them, thus making it useless to even steal them.

Use any full metal box with cover to store your keys at home. Toyota owners, you can turn off your key (check your manual). Away from home, use a Farrady pouch. Install a kill switch. Also cover your windshield VIN. Block your OBD2 port.

When i was stationed at Gitmo, Cuba, one of the SeaBees had an old Rambler station wagon. No doors on the front. He'd leave the key in the ignition so other 'Bees could use it to go from the barracks to downtown or the beach. Someone kept or lost the key, so he took the spare and J-B welded it in the ignition. We'd use it and then put a couple gallons of gas back into it, or leave a six pac for the next guy. No one ever "stole" it, hell, you're on Base (Smalltown USA), on an island, surrounded by commie minefields and rusty barbed wire, where're gonna go...? ☆

Steering wheel locks...that was how you helped keep your car from being stolen back in the 60's and 70's. We are starting to go backwards, de- evolving. We just need to go back to keys. Next, we will be hiding a toggle switch under the dash to disable the vehicle, just like in the old days.
