I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good" I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted. Because it gives the rest of us a bad name. You ever went above and beyond to make sure a car was done right, the whole time the customer is making an angry face at you and judging you because they think you're ripping them off. Just yesterday a lady came in for a headlight bulb and her brake pedal went to the floor with no stopping power applied. Replaced her bulb and checked the brake fluid. It was empty. She refused service, so I at least topped it off and pumped the brakes a bit to get the warning light off and get somewhat of a pedal. She then loaded up her kid in the car seat and drove off.

CycleCruza I know right. A pep boys told me I needed a left tie rod when I didn’t actually need one. Other garages can just screw your car up. I had my 2001 Acura TL serviced at a garage in the city and came out with an exhaust leak. How did I get an exhaust leak after I had my wheel bearings done? I mean that’s nonsense. The mechanic worked on my car acted like he didn’t know. Worst part is, the shop didn’t even tell me there was an exhaust leak before they brought out my car. I’m working on my own car next time. These mechanics are mediocre.
@JamesSmith-lt5zz6 жыл бұрын
NissanSucks99xVT well they may have loosened a header bolt so it would leak eventually and have you come in to change the exhaust gasket. or could be a coincidence it was about to rattle loose. and mechanics suck today because everything is done with computers now. there's very few old school mechanics left. they plug in a computer it tells them what to change. they have another computer for the repair and tells the step by step with video and pictures on how to change it. so it's not very hard to become ase or nase certified anymore. almost no cars are repaired anymore that don't have a obd1 or 2 sensor under the dash anymore. they started those like 25 years ago

I'm a technician myself, and I'm so glad I work for a great company that doesn't try this on customers. We actually do videos of our multi-point inspections so that the customers can see exactly what we're seeing when we look their vehicle over. We also do video updates for any services that they've come in for. (For example, someone came in for air and after noticing their tire was flat, I informed the advisor and they made an appointment right then and there. We made a multi-point inspection video, and also provided a video showing exactly where the hole in the tire was.) I feel like more shops should adopt this system. While yes, it does make more work for techs, and longer wait times, it also helps to give transparency between customers and businesses. With these quick lube shops, it'd probably help their reputation.

while there are certified mechanics, like Mr. Goodwrench, this means only that they are educated to the point of doing common things. In California there is (so far?) no license required to 'be a mechanic'. If you can get the tools, you are one. I was a much more educated mechanic than Dave Dawes, but he seemed to be offended when I would try to tell him he was wrong about something. One day we went to the bank to get money to buy the overhaul kit for the twelfth car stacked up in the back of the garage. The bank said, oops there is an error, send the money back (vacuum tube delivery system) and I said, find out what the error is and send them THAT MUCH. Dave brushed me off, and sent all the money back and we waited for our 'change'... which didn't come. We went in the front door (and nearly to jail) because the bank said that they would have to 'tally the registers' and THEN return any moneys. We lost two days, waiting for that money. See, DD had a talent for selling people on the idea that 'hey, it's a big big desert, bad place to have your car screw up!." That is exactly how he sold the engine overhaul to a car owner with 20k miles on the engine.

As a former ASE Certified Trained mechanic, I was applauded for my honesty. I would always show the customer what I was explaining to them, so they had a very clear understanding of what was Needed on their vehicle. When changing any of the fluids, I would have them come to their vehicle, so I could show them the dirty fluids, that way they could see for themselves what dirty fluid looked like and what clean fluid looked like. Also, as a vehicle owner, you have the right to see exactly what the mechanic is telling you what it needs and also, if any parts are replaced, you have the right to get your old parts back for your inspection. Always write on the work order: "I WANT MY OLD PARTS RETURNED BACK TO ME FOR MY INSPECTION!" I used to have a brother-in-law who worked at a local repair shop and he would do many DISHONEST things to customers vehicles and I told him, one day he's gonna get caught..... well, I'm glad my sister divorced him before I ever found out if he did get caught. I was trained/taught from the old school days of basic: "HONESTY"

Many retail stores need to take this approach. When I was a store GM (Staples), I completely ignored the company "push" sales. Focusing on profits earned from pushing high margin items on customers may work in the short term, but it's costly in the long run (because you didn't give them a reason to come back). My philosophy was to gain an understanding of a client's needs/goals (especially small businesses) so you can truly justify what you're going to sell to them. I don't care what corporate gimmick sales idea got the customer in initially. Getting the person to return because they trust you is what matters. I absolutely refused to sell that liquid armor screen protector scam. That was a grift straight from the top.

@@dreameryoung38 you'd have a real hard time finding a legit ASE certified shop at least where I'm from. I've worked for almost 8 different shops and not one was close to qualifying for ASE certs (75% of mechanics in the shop must be ASE certified for the shop to qualify). Technicians aren't usually book smart guys and getting ASE certified is a ton of serious testing, not to mention they have to be recertified every 5 years. I've met at least 100 different mechanics and maybe 5 of them bothered doing ASE certs.

These companies prey on the "automobile uneducated". I actually had my car go in the dealership for a 60,000 service/ and timing belt change. (To comply with warranty) I got a yellow paint pen an put a dot on oil filter, spark plugs and other items. When I picked up my car, I told the service manager what I did and I want to inspect the car before I paid. Everything was good, except the plugs and wires. I told him to I would take him to court for fraud. He gave me a set of wires and plugs and tore up the service order. I trust nobody with my cars.

I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops. I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.

I've also worked in the automotive service and repair industry, and it is true that the ENTIRE industry is plagued by incompetence and criminal behavior, whether it is the mechanic or the service advisors and managers, also don't be fooled while these chain stores are exceptionally bad, the $tealerships, and even independent shops can be every bit as crooked. Yet most of the industry leaders refuse to really own up to the systemic nature of the problem and actually do anything to really change things. The best advice I can give is when you have ANY work to your car done at all, have them explain exactly what they are going to do and insist on watching them while they do the work, and also ask for any parts back that they replace when they do a job.
@RennieAsh9 жыл бұрын

Rennie Ash My personal shop I always take my car to will explain and physically show me the default. For example, I had a clunk when going over bumps and defects in the road on the right side, I took it to shop figuring it to be a strut or bushing. Mechanic walked me back to my car and grabbed the wheel and rocked it and said is this the noise? I said it is, he said "that's not the strut it's the bearing". They told me up front that in my car if they remove the bearing they will have to refill the diff fluid which I already knew. Drove home and 4 years later I have never heard the noise. If you have a shop like this don't ever go any where else as it shows they are not fucking with me, beside the fact we have used them for 10 years and have never had a complaint in my entire family.

As a mechanic myself, id like to know how it is that you find a mechanic that you can trust? Ive started my own business because im sick of working for places that are dodgy. Ive even been fired from two jobs for being too honest with the customers! Guess what. Those customers followed me to my next place of work, and are now customers of my own business. Honesty has gotten me more business than any lies ever could, and i make sure to explain to my customers exactly what it is im doing and why, and even invite them to watch. When they cant hang around for the work, i make sure to photograph and video the work being done with before and after and send it to the customers so they know ive been honest and they all talk. I dont advertise, and my registered business is just in my name. I dont even need a business name because the word of mouth and repeat customers keep me busier than i can manage. Why do workshops and dealerships feel the need to rip people off?!

I had a similar experience. I have a 1963 Dodge D200. Shortly after getting it, I picked up a 4X4 "hulk" that had compatible parts -- a way to get a WD200 "on the cheap." A few months later, I notice some broken spring leaves on the front end, so I started the conversion early -- replacing the 2 wheel drive axle with the 4 wheel drive front end and associated springs... Later, in an attempt to be kind to me, my Bride took the truck to an "Oil Change Place" to get it serviced. They actually changed the oil, but when I looked at the bill, they had added a charge for "six pounds of gear lube to top up the transfer case." In this instance, they did not ask my wife for permission, they just charged her for the service. When they billed her, they told her they had added "transmission grease"; she did not spot the discrepancy until after she left the shop. When she got home, she immediately brought the problem to my attention and I had a follow up conversation with the Manager... Me: "So, tell me how you put 6 lbs of grease into my transfer case..." MGR: "Well, the technician checked the drip port on the side, saw it was down, and just pumped it in." Me: "Okay, sounds plausible -- but I'll be needing that technician's name so I can swear out a warrant for Burglary." MGR: "Burglary?" Me: "Yeah, given that he serviced the transfer case for that truck without permission, AND that the case is sitting on the floor of my garage, AND that my garage was locked when you serviced it, your technician would have had to defeat the locks and illegally enter my garage to perform the service... I do believe that constitutes Burglary..." MGR: [After looking under the truck and seeing there was, indeed, no transfer case] "Um, how about a refund?" Me: "Yeah, how about that?"

Tried calling around places to find replacement part, no luck. Manager said he would drive himself to pick up part, never happened. He said they would pay for rental. Took several days to get part and fix it. I was told over the phone higher ups weren't going to pay for rental after they said they would. When I picked it up, employee said she heard what happened and felt it wasn't right since she heard they would pay for it and didn't...so she gave me the keys and said she wasn't charging me for the oil change or battery. Still had to pay for the rental. They tried to tell me the shocks needed replacing too when I had it in for brakes. Car still rides fine.

I've always done my own maintenance. A few years back, my brakes started to squeal, so there was some urgency to change the pads. I bought a set and changed them that evening. While I had the wheels off, I noticed that the tyres were getting close to the end as well, so after putting in the new pads, I took it for new tyres the next day. The mechanic raised it on the jack, appeared to look behind the wheel, and said "Your brake pads need changing." I asked how bad they were, and he said "They're completely shot" (having driven all for 20 miles!) Needless to say, somebody else got the job of changing my tyres.
