So a private company holds cars containing police evidence? That doesn't seem very secure. Evidence could easily be tampered with.

The problem here is that they used to do just that, but the cars would regularly turn up again and again and again involved in different crimes with different owners. And a lot of people in Britain seem to like driving without proper registration, license and insurance on the vehicles, and they found it much cheaper to not pay for any of that and, if caught and the vehicle seized, then they'd just go to the police auction and pick up another car on the dirt cheap. Maybe even the car they originally lost. So rather than go through this endless cycle forever, now its either be registered, licensed and insured properly, or else find your card heading for the scrap yard so the cops no longer see the same vehicles involved in multiple different crimes over the years.

In the United States, used car parts and restoring cars is big business. Seems pretty stupid that they just crush cars. I go to a "pull a part" junkyard and when I need a part, I can go to a place and get a working windshield wiper motor or a fender or door in the exact color of my car or engine part or even something as silly as a set of fuses. The yard gets their money, I pay 10% what a new part cost and when the cars finally are crushed, they have no seats, no doors and many less parts that are now being well used keeping other cars on the road. I suppose this it the stupidity seen all over England like their recycling business where the yards get paid by the government and they literally ship the un-recycled plastic to India.

The scrap yards where I live in Ontario, Canada, we do the same thing. Vehicles are stripped of any usable parts,which are sold. Any thing left over will be crushed. We have a huge steel plant that they go to, so that everything is recycled ♽. I hope you have a great day Jack.🙂⚘️.

Usefull parts are stripped out, the rest gets crushed. The benefit of crushing is in easier to transport to recycling facility instead of taking up space in a junkyard or impound. Also reduces/prevents a chance of people creating cars with fake VINs,... Also in most of the Europe, cars are subjected to anual roadworthiness and safety checks. There are rare cases when using used parts makes financial sense, and even less cases where using used parts is safe (old tires with still legal amount of tread). So unlike the USA, where you can drive an unsafe/dangerous and unroadworthy vehicles, that is much harder in European countries.

@user-kc1tf7zm3b
@user-kc1tf7zm3b 8 ай бұрын
Many of these very old cars are unroadworthy, so the authorities do not want the cars to be returned to the roads anyway. As stated by the scrapper, the commercially valuable parts are recovered for resale. The rest of the car is of little value and is scrapped. British car registration rules require annual mechanical safety inspections, so what would pass muster in many parts of America would instantly fail in the UK. The British have higher standards.

In US police can issue a "fix it" ticket where you have so many days to repair and return to police inspection station. So it's handled on an exception basis; a few weird states do require annual inspection.

US requirements for inspection vary. My state has a thorough inspection similar to yours. NJ on the other hand has no safety inspection, only emissions test, which is apalling. It's ok to drive a hazardous vehicle as long as it isn't polluting.

Police are not required to check for drivers driving without insurance and or registration unless it’s a police car equipped with checking devices. As some one who suffers from chronic pain now because of an uninsured unlicensed illegal Imigrant driving a car with no breaks who smashed into me rupturing several discs in my back, this is absolutely what needs to be done in USA. Any car found uninsured, driver with no license, car un registered/ expired registration because unsafe should be immediately impounded. I see all these cops now days only issuing a ticket while these cars that shouldn’t be on the road in the first place driving away from the police when they know it’s uninsured. USA use to impound for no insurance no license now they just let these deadbeat drivers keep driving to rack up more tickets

@@John-G Not all are, Some are just folks working a job and having bills that they have to pay catch up on them, It happens, We're not perfect and we don't need lumped into a category that we ain't, Just cause someone missed a insurance payment or didn't renew that stupid plate sticker don't make them a danger, There's a diffrence from wreckless driving and just driving with this-that illegal cause of the unfairly high costs tacked on with it. Maybe if they didn't charge such high fees people could always afford to buy a stupid little sticker to slap on their back plate every year but in my State the cost is outrageous, Frankly they could just have it where you could fill out a form online to reregister yearly FREE but if they insist on charging for it there's no need it should be bout $150.00 :O.

@@PolizeiPaul Sorry, but ALL are, no exceptions - not for the tax / registration side which makes little or no difference to anyone else (apart from the taxpayers) but for the insurance side. If you hit someone and you're not insured then IF they have full insurance and can claim on their own insurance all they lose is their no claims bonus. If they don't and all they have is Third Party or Third Party, Fire and Theft, though, then they have to pay for the damage YOU've caused, which could mean anything from losing their car to losing their job if they need it for work, to paying their own medical bills - if they can afford to. They're "folks working a job", trying to play "catch up" and make ends meet too, and you've just stopped that happening. How much of a danger do you want them to be?

Listen, it is hard for EVERYONE. NO ONE WANTS TO PAY. But we do it anyways because that's the safe and legal thing. If I get in an accident with an uninsured driver, MY insurance has to pay. How is that fair to me??

Why not aution cars off . Help homeless or people who need help

Many of these very old cars are unroadworthy, so the authorities do not want the cars to be returned to the roads anyway. As stated by the scrapper, the commercially valuable parts are recovered for resale. The rest of the car is of little value and is scrapped.

In the US they would be. Consider that the UK has far less space. It's actually more advantageous not to have those cars on the road. Plus then people have to buy new cars. It's also a way to get junkers off the road.

I don’t agree with auctioning the property of others….unless used in serious crimes I think confiscation is wrong… I agree with laws like insurance although insurance companies and their rates have become ridiculous….licensure, inspections etc are all reasonable and well justified
